I just finished trying out the sample demo in Traditional Chinese and it is BRILLIANT!!! My dilemma is my daughter's level in chinese is already beyond reading single words and phrases. I am mostly interested in the Chinese stories but I can't really justify spending another hundred bucks just to get the stories.  :sigh:

I had the same questions as Bella. I am so excited about this as I've wanted to teach my daughter Mandarin since she was born. Thank you, Brillkids!

I just downloaded the demo.  I really like the pronuciations.  I can follow along much better than with audio clips I've downloaded from the internet.

Bella - from what I have read/understand, even if you don't continue it - they will have a much easier time learning it later in life if they decide to do so.  They can even have a perfect accent if exposed to the language in the first year or so of life.  I plan is to find/hire someone locally who will speak the language with my son to make the lessons meaningful and motivate him.  Hope this helps!

Simplified.  A friend from college who is from China said to definintely use simplified.  I don't really have any good reason to use traditional.

Does anyone know if simplified is used anywhere in China or if it's just used to teach foreigners or perhaps children?

All people in Mainland China use simplified Chinese. And it's a trend to use simplified Chinese worldwide except Hong Kong. I am a Hongkonger. We use traditional Chinese. But some children in Hong Kong begin to learn simplified one which is not a current script in HK yet. It is not a question of hardness or easiness of whether to learn traditional or simplified, but a question of getting used to which one first. Once you get used to one kind, it's quite hard to learn another one unless you learn it earlier(childhood or younsters). So my suggestion is that which one you will often contact in your daily life or  more chance you will see which script.

There's also Taiwan which uses traditional.  Singapore is pretty much totally simplified, though you'll see some traditional sometimes.  In Malaysia it used to be more traditional than simplified but I think it's probably now slightly more simplified than traditional.

The trend is to use simplified since Mainland China uses simplified.

If you know traditional, then learning simplified is much easier than if you know simplified and try to learn traditional.

For me, especially being in Hong Kong, we're teaching Felicity traditional but will also teach simplified later.

Apart from the simplified/traditional question, yes, it would certainly benefit a child even if no one speaks the language at home.  I wrote about this here:

Have tried the traditional Chinese curriculum this afternoon and felt disappointed actually - I am happy with the simplied version though. I took it for granted that the traditional Chinese curriculum will have either Cantonese or Taiwainese pronunciation but it's not! It's still exactly the same pronunciation as the people in mainland China use - but traditional Chinese is not used in mainland China! The feeling is very strange (when I hear the mainland style Chinese pronunciation associated with tradition Chinese characters). Can I suggest that Little Reader please take this into consideration and produce Traditional Chinese/Cantonese version please? My husband speaks Cantonese and uses traditional Chinese and I speak mandarine and uses simplied Chinese, we both felt the traditional Chinese/mainland Chinese pronunciation combination is a bit odd.

I would like also suggest that Little Reader could have British English version if that is at all possible.

Many thanks.

Well, we thought we made it clear that this curriculum is based on Mainland China in terms of vocabulary, which would naturally mean Mainland Chinese pronunciations.  We also make it very clear it's Mandarin, and not Cantonese.

Of course, Mainland Chinese pronunciations typically would go with simplified, but we know of many people (especially in Hong Kong, actually) who would like their children to learn MANDARIN, but yet also to recognize TRADITIONAL characters.  This would be for those people.  This is NOT for people who want to learn CANTONESE.

As for Taiwanese pronunciations, we MAY eventually do a Taiwanese Mandarin version in terms of vocab, in which case we would use Taiwanese voice artists to record the pronunciations, similarly to how we have a British version of the English curriculum.

Right now, you CAN get the curriculum in US or British English if you are purchasing today.  We will announce soon regarding how to obtain the UK version if you already have the English version. (but let's keep that conversation separate from this thread).

Back to your original question - sorry if we didn't make it clear enough for you that it is a Mandarin version.  Please remember that you can always request for a refund within 30 days.

KL... at a little over 2 1/2 is Portia too old to learn Traditional /Simplified chinese.  I currently have a brainy Baby spanish and French dvd backing and I am trying to get a lot more spanish based videos for her learning.  But i was waiting for the chinese add on. Before I press the button go, I wanted some leads on which pack I should purchase and if it will not be difficult for her...
Also how can I teach her to write? I still struggle with basic English writing though her reading skills are very good.
