Title: CONTEST: Write a Children's Story!
Post by: Lappy on July 25, 2008, 06:54:36 AM
Write a Children's Story!

Here’s how to join:

1. Write a simple story for very early readers, so make sure your words can be read at a basic reading level.
   •   Your story can be a SIMPLIFIED ADAPTATION of popular stories, or one that’s COMPLETELY ORIGINAL.
   •   5 to 15 slides per story

2. Plan your storyboard by splitting your story into 1 or 2 sentences per slide.

3. Post a summary of your entry in this thread in the following format:
Title: The title of your story and your name (you may use a pen name, if you like)
Slide 1: One or two sentences of your story
Image:  Describe your illustration or what illustration you mean to have
              Picture Audio: (if any)
Slide 2:  Another sentence or two from your story
Image:  Describe your illustration or what illustration you mean to have
              Picture Audio: (if any)

4. You can post as many entries as you like!

Duration:
Contest ends on August 22, 2008

Judging:  KL & I will review the entries on August 22nd. We will announce the winners on August 25, 2008.

[EDIT: As we won't be able to review everything until Monday 25th, you can still submit entries over the weekend!]

Prizes:

The person with the best story will get  5,000 loyalty points, plus we will actually commission a professional artist to illustrate the story and publish it as one of the default categories for Little Reader with credit going to the author!

We will also choose the Top 10 Storytellers and give them 1,000 loyalty points each!

Criteria for Judging:
   •   Originality
   •   Creativity
   •   Suitability and effectiveness for the early reader

Adding Pictures and Audio:
Although the contest doesn’t require this, you can still choose to create your own story categories and playlists, and add your own images, pronunciation and picture audio.  The more people download your story, the more points you earn!

so it's not judged with any pictures? you are just judging by the story itself?

Title: Re: CONTEST: Write a Children's Story!
Post by: Lappy on July 25, 2008, 02:56:02 PM
That's right, Nikki.  The contest doesn't require them to be illustrated nor made into categories, but of course you are all free to make them into Little Reader playable files for everyone to enjoy!  This time, we hope everyone will join the contest, seeing as it is much easier to submit an entry.

Being one of the most creative members of our forum, I look forward to seeing work from you soon!

Cheers everyone, and have fun!  lol

Hi Lappy,

I have attached my story as a ppt slide with some illustrations from clipart. Though they are not very consistent, they tell the story!

Is this what you are looking for? Shall i make it simpler?

Wonderful, Anushyam!! What a great story to get the ball rolling!

My only comment would be that some slides could be made shorter or split into another slide, cos this is aimed for the very early reader. But in any case, I thoroughly enjoyed it!! :D

Thanks for all your effort!

Hi, wasn't sure if this was too simple.  I can get all the photos for it though.  I thought that there can be a vocabulary list to work on before reading the story too.  Hope it is close to what your looking for.

Ok maybe my first story was too advanced for little kids to read. So I'm taking KL's advice and embarking on this simple phonetic story from my child's school.  :)

Wonderful work, all!! Man, I think this is going to be a very hard contest to judge!!

Koala Girl, you could almost turn that into a Little Reader download already! Why don't you make it one and let us all (and our kids) enjoy it too?

:)

Thank you!  I can go ahead and download it but I don't have my microphone up and running yet.  I can download it without me reading it or I can try to get my microphone running.  Thanks for the encouragement though!

I love the other stories too!  I can't wait to see more.  My DD and I are having so much fun together here already.  My older kids even get on Brillbaby when I'm not watching just for the fun of it!

I’m imagining this drawn with the same kinds of colors you find in the book “Bear Wants More”  by Karma Wilson.  I’m basing the vocabulary in the story more on what my 2 and 3 year olds like to have read to them, and not something on the earliest of reading levels.  For audio, I would read the story out-loud on each slide, and if it were workable, have the words highlighted as they are read (so that it’s more of a read-along, than a read-aloud  ).  It would be neat for the parents to re-record the story using their own child’s name instead of “Rachael.”  I may try to make some pictures and upload it’s category file (if I can make something that actually resembles the story (I’m awful at drawing even stick figures!  )  Enjoy!

A Walk in the Woods
by Rebekah McNary

Slide 1:     One morning, Rachael went for a walk in the woods.
Image:      A little blonde girl is skipping away from a house towards an opening in
                the nearby woods.

Slide 2:     She could smell the wet earth that was still damp with dew.
Image:      The brown, packed-earth trail is winding through the tall trees.  Shorter bushes,
plants, flowers, etc are close to the trail.  There’s a beautiful spider’s web at eye level
on one side (a bigger, colorful banana spider maybe?).  Dew drops are shining all
over the plants, and are especially pretty on the spider’s web.  The little girl is
                studying the web.

Slide 3:     She looked up at the tall, tall trees.
Image:      A picture taken from the ground looking up her face showing the tops of the trees
reaching towards the bright blue sky with big fluffy white clouds.

Slide 4:     It was sunny, but the trees shaded her and kept her cool.
Image:      The girl is leaning into a gentle breeze that’s blowing back her hair and dress (just a
little bit) with her eyes closed tight, a big grin on her face, and her arms flung back a
bit.  Notice the rays of light making small bright patches on the brown path.

Slide 5:     Rachael listened to the birds singing while they bathed in a little stream.
Image:      The girl’s head is cocked to one side as she watches the birds with a half-smile on
her face.  She’s holding something by now, a rock, a flower, a large fallen leaf, etc.
Some are in a clear, pebbly, shallow stream.  Some are drying and preening
themselves just above on some tree branches that hang over the stream.

Slide 6:     She watched a rabbit munching on some grass.
Image:      The girl is squatting a stone’s-throw from the brown/gray rabbit.  She’s looking at
the bunny, but her hand is reaching for a clover flower by her shoe (Mary-Janes  )

Slide 7:     She noticed some bees lazily buzzing around the clover flowers.
Image:      The girl is now sitting on the ground in a big patch of clover.  Her legs are both to
one side, and she’s leaning on her hand on the other side.  Her free hand holds the
clover flower up to her nose (for her to smell) while her focus is on the bees.

Slide 8:     Then she heard a rustling noise in the bushes!
Image:      Her head whips around to see the bushes (showing some shaking motion) with eyes
as big as saucers and an “O” mouth.

Slide 9:     What WAS that?!  A cat?  A dog?  NO!
Image:      The girl is squatting/starting to stand, still staring at the bush.  The bush has two
BIG eyes looking out at her, and a large undefined body still mostly hidden in the
                shadow of the bush

Slide 10:     A GIANT raccoon scurried across the brown path…
Image:        The girl is standing straight with her arms slightly out to the side.  She’s dropping
her flower and taking a step backwards (away from the raccoon).  The raccoon is
running quickly on his toes straight across the path.  He’s unusually big (like a
medium-sized dog) fluffy, friendly-looking (and a bit scared himself) looking
straight ahead to the other side of the path.

Slide 11:     slipped quickly into the long grass…
Image:        He’s reached the other side of the path.  He’s nosing into a patch of grass that’s
quite tall enough to hide him.

Slide 12:     and was gone…
Image:        swishy grass covers his trail and you can’t see him anymore.

Slide 13:     Rachael was so excited!
Image:        She’s grinning again, and her eyes are squished shut a bit.  Maybe hands clasped
                  together under her chin?

Slide 14:     She wanted to tell Daddy about everything she saw.
Image:        She stoops to pick up her fallen flower.

Slide 15:     Rachael skipped back up the path…
Image:        Skipping with hair and dress blowing back, passing the things she just saw.

Slide 16:     and all the way home.
Image:        girl’s back skipping back up the path from the woods heading to front door.

Slide 17:     THE END

Title: Re: CONTEST: Write a Children's Story!
Post by: Mum on August 18, 2008, 01:34:46 PM
I wrote this story last week after we enjoyed a day at the park. My three year old daughter, Penny, loved the story the first two times that I read it to her. I explained that the story was all about her and that she was the happy girl speaking in the story.

However, five minutes later she was not very happy. She came up and told me that she did not have a vegemite sandwich and Daddy did not have a donut. I explained to her that when writing a story for other people I have to change the story a little to make it more fun for them because they could not actually be with us and have fun at the park. This eventually made her happy again and off she went to play.

The next time we are going to visit “the duck park” as Penny calls it, I shall have to remember to pack the picnic fare included in the story so that I can take photos and attach them to Little Reader for my children to enjoy.

Download the story at http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1106

Hi there,

I hope this is the right way to post my story!  I'm still new to this website.  I use this story to introduce the topic of colours to my kids.  They love it.  Hope you like it too.

By the way I managed to find pictures as well but couldn't find a way how to paste them together with the story.

Title: Colours of the Rainbow

Slide 1: One day, the sky was full of huge, WHITE clouds.  “We have no colour,” sobbed the clouds.  And soon it started to rain.
Image: Sky covered in white clouds

Slide 2: They cried and cried, and it rained, and rained.  The angels in heaven heard their cries and asked them what was the matter.
Image: Cute little angels on clouds

Slide 3: “Our colour is so pale!” cried one cloud, and the others joined in.  So the angels promised them that from that day on, the most COLOURFUL of things will appear in the sky whenever it rained….

Slide 4: Soon after a colourful RAINBOW appeared.

This story is one for parents to read repeatedly, until child catches on firstly through memorization. It's a fun rhyming tongue-twisting story.  It’s an introduction to conservation of hurt, endangered Australian animals, and mentions Australian towns and occupations. Most slides are self-explanatory, being a picture of a person in work clothes rescuing an injured animal, or an animal with a landmark like Ayer’s Rock (Uluru) or a map of the state of the town mentioned in the background. True Blue means fair dinkum dinky di really truly Aussie. They are all Real Aussie town names and real animals and occupations!!!

Pretty [insert your little princess's name *hereby referred to as "#"] and Her Mermaid Princess by Philo

Once upon a time and not very far way was a pretty little girl named #.

Everyone else loved her and called her Pretty #.

One day, after finishing her school assignments, Pretty # took her allowance to the toy store.

There were so many toys to choose from.

Pretty # picked the mermaid princess toy and paid eight dollars.

She loved her mermaid princess toy very much.

She took her mermaid princess toy whenever she would go, and showed it all of her favorite places.

One day, as Pretty # took her mermaid princess toy to the beach, something strange started to happen.

Her mermaid princess toy started talking to her.

"I am a real mermaid princess, but a bad witch made me into a toy."

I could turn turn into a real princess again by my dolphin friends."

Pretty # was kind and gentle. She couldn't bear to see the mermaid princess suffer.

She had an idea.

She called out "dolphins" to the sea as loudly as she could.

Suddenly, six magical dolphins appeared and started to swim towards the shore.

Altogether they said to Pretty  # :

"Thank you for rescuing our mermaid princess!"

They took the mermaid princess toy back into their fins and chanted something magical to the it.

Then came a loud noise, "bang!"

The mermaid princess toy turned into a beautiful life-sized mermaid princess with long flowing blond hair and a dazzling crown made of seashells.

"Thank you, Pretty #, for turning me back into a real mermaid princess!

Now please allow me to take you to my palace so my father, the King of mermen and mermaids, could give you a handsome reward."

The King of mermen and maids presented Pretty # with a silverish pink crown for saving his daughter, saying: "You are now also a princess of the sea."

After the crowning ceremony, the mermen and mermaids threw a big party in honor of their new princess--Princess Pretty #.

It was one of the most wonderful days for Pretty #--or shall we now call her--Princess Pretty #.

None of us would ever forget that magical day.

The End.

The Tale of the Snail and the Whale. by Nicole

Slide1:
May I regale you with a tale
Of a wee little snail and a great big whale?

Image1:Snail playing in sperm whale's spout water. Both smiling.

Slide 2 and 3
On the tail of the whale,
The snail set sail,
On a quest-that’s a search-
For the Golden Quail.

Image 2: Snail on tail of whale. Image3: Picture of Golden quail, big question mark, treasure map behind.

Slide 4, 5, 6, 7:
From Granada to Canada,
Ireland to Iceland,
England to Finland,
And to far away New Zealand.

Image 4:Map of line showing distance between Granada and Canada. Image 5: Same for Ireland to Iceland
Image 6:Same for England to Finland.  Image 7: Finland to New Zealand. (Show features of the countries, a 3D map)

Slide 8:
They traveled far and wide,
With a big star as their guide.
They traveled wide and far
Following that shining star.

Image 8:Whale with fin(flipper) up sheilding eyes looking into distance, with big star lighting the way.

Slide 9 and 10:
Their search ended up in vain,
For when they got to Spain,
They were drenched with flooding rain.
So they headed right back home again.

Image 9 and 10: Images of bullfighters and flamenco dancers, map of spain. Whale and snail near shore with heavy rain, choppy sea.

Slide11 and 12:
They thought bad weather had doomed them to fail,
Those icy cold winds that were blowing a gale,
And the water funnel tornado hot on their trail-
Hence Whale returned home with Snail on her tail.

Image 11: hurricane force winds blowing past glaciers. Image 12:A water spout tornado following them out to sea, them looking scared looking back over their shoulders trying to get away from it.

Slide 13:
But as there’s no such thing as a Golden Quail-
Right from the start they were destined to fail!
There was no point blaming high winds and rain,
The quest for the Quail was always in vain.

Image 13:Whale and snail happily at home with family, where they should have stayed all along!!

Wake up! Good morning!
Stop your yawning!
Wakey-wakeys mummy,
A new day is dawning.

Mum changes my nappy,
And gives me milk to drink.
Then she dresses me up,
From head to toe in pink.

Slides 5 and 6:
We go out for a drive,
I’m strapped into the car.
I fall fast asleep,
And we haven’t gone far!

When we get home,
My mum wakes me up.
I have something to eat,
And I drink from a cup.

Slide 9 and 10:

I play with my pussy-cat,
Patting her paws,
So soft and furry,
Ouch! Out come her claws.

Slide 11 and 12:

Sitting in my mum’s lap.
I fall off to noddy-land,
And she puts me down for a nap.

Thanks, but the last one I'm not happy with, I just rushed writing it to get it in before the deadline. Or are they extending it again... I have more stories in mind, not enough time to get them written.  How do working mothers do it?? Just trying to get a spare moment to writie a story was a nightmare.

I hear you Nikita - I had lots of ideas too- just no time.  Sometimes I get really frustrated b/c I know there is no possible way to get all of the things done that I hope to accomplish with and for my kiddos while they are still young.  We'll just have to keep doing the best we can, I guess!

We'll be announcing the winner soon so please stay tuned...
