Does anyone have any idea what causes morning sickness? Can it to be a difference in blood type to the mother?

Hi there,

You know when your pregnant and all the wives tales get told to you?  Well, often I was told that morning sickness was a good sign as it meant that the baby was growing well.  I never did any research on the matter.  However, with myself I noticed that the morning sickness lessened when I changed my vitamin supplement which had a lot of iron in it.  I only discovered this toward the end of my pregnancy.   Sad

For me my "morning sickness" occures at night during the 1st 3mths of my pregnancy.

Nausea and vomitting is believed to be triggered by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. It can be exacerbated by the smell, or even the sight, of certain foods

Some general tips that may help to alleviate the symptoms:
.Eat small portions of food frequently throughtout the day
.Eat less spicy and greasy foods
.Remain upright after eating or move around gently for a little while after a meal
.Sleep on two pillows to reduce reflux
.Have sips of milk or eat small light crackers before going to bed and getting out of bed

Morning sickness and most of the other early pregnancy symptoms are hormonal problems and usually disappear by the 12th week.

I think it is mostly from the liver/gallbladder not being able to process the excess hormones, mostly beta hcg.  When I had morning sickness when I was pregnant with a singleton the nausea felt a lot like when I would have gallbladder problems when not pregnant. Since taking globe artichoke extract worked for my gallbladder before, I tried it and it worked.

My morning sickness was severe and lasted 24 hours.  It was never worse in the morning.

When I was pregnant with twins and had a very high beta hcg, the sickness was even worse and the globe artichoke extract didn't seem to work as well.  I read on this forum to use milk thistle and it worked.  So far it has worked on about 10 other pregnant people I have told. It is water soluble and only sticks around for 3-4 hours though so it needs to be taken at breakfast, lunch and dinner for those who have all day AM sickness.

Even doctors are not sure what is the root cause of pregnancy sickness. It could be the body's reaction to the pregnancy hormones and it is produced in higher levels during the first trimester. And that could be the reason why the sickness is experienced during the first trimester.  Also during pregnancy, the sense of smell is higher, which could stimulate nausea.

It's because of hormones.

Morning sickness can be due to changes in hormone level. I don't think there is a connection with blood group.
