Magnet fun

  *Large assortment of magnets

Learn vocabulary

•   Magnet
•   Magnetic – what does it mean if something is magnetic?
•   Non-magnetic – what does it mean if something is non-magnetic?
•   Metal
•   Magnetic attraction – explain that this is a force that pulls two items together.
•   Magnetic repulsion – this is a force that pushes two items apart.
•   Magnetic field or force

Let them test with a variety of objects whether they are magnetic or not. show them how magnets attract and repel.

Fishing with Magnets

Cut out various sizes of fish from construction paper. Place a paper clip on the nose of each fish.
Make fishing poles by using fat wooden dowels or paper towel holders.  Tie one end of the string to the dowel or paper towel tube. Tie a round magnet on the other end of the fishing pole. Teach your child to fish and see how many fish they can catch (counting).

Phone fun

Print out these numbers to make a giant phone keypad and teach your child their phone number or to dial 911 in and emergency.

We can't get enough bubble time in the spring/summer and fall. LOL I think the dollarstore makes a killing on me, as I'm there more often then not buying bubbles.

Ice Blocks

Build giant ice blocks and balls for a toddler to play with outside. If small ice cubes melt too quickly, try making a larger block of ice to play with in the bath or outside on a warm summer day.
Materials

    * Clean milk carton
    * Water
    * Food coloring (optional)
    * Small plastic toys (optional)

Directions

   1. Make an ice block by freezing water in a clean milk carton.
   2. If you like, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before freezing, or drop in a few small plastic toys.
   3. Your child will enjoy playing with the block in the bath or outside in the pool.
   4. If you've frozen small plastic toys inside the block, watch your child's surprise as the ice melts and the toys appear.
   5. As a variation, fill balloons with water, tie tightly, and freeze to make ice balls.

Nature Bracelet

Materials

    * Masking tape
    * Scissors

Directions

   1. Before going outdoors with your child, wrap a piece of masking tape to his wrist, sticky side up.
   2. As you explore, help him attach colorful leaves, flowers, and other interesting discoveries to his bracelet.
   3. When done, use scissors to snip off the nature bracelet.
   4. Display on a bulletin board, shelf, or wall.
after that you can talk with your  child about the things in bracelet

If it's sunny I usually take a big plastic tub filled with water and give my daughter tons of plastic or wooden cups, containers etc... She usually waters the plants with those containers :-)

One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities such as watching TV (including DVDs or videos) or playing video games. Below are some ideas for helping your child stay active:

    * Play tag, "Duck, Duck, Goose", "Follow the Leader", or "Ring Around the Rosy".
    * Take turns hopping on one foot.
    * Go bike riding.
    * Turn on some music and dance together.
    * Make an obstacle course with pillows, chairs, and boxes.
    * Have a treasure hunt, hiding "treasures" around the house.
    * Walk like a penguin, hop like a rabbit, imitate other animals' movements.
    * Balance a beanbag while walking.
    * Play wheelbarrow by holding your child's legs while he or she walks on hands.
    * Turn a walk into a scavenger hunt by listing items for your child to find (a dog, blue car, a flag).

We do photoshoots outside at the park. My son loves to ham it up, we roll down hills and kick leaves around, play on the play structure and then we come home and look at all the pictures we took smile

I tried this today. I'd never thought of this! The tube is on an angle on the bed and my daughter sits on the bed pushing out little Lego cars. I think she'll be able to last longer at this when she's a little older.

Sidewalk chalk is terrific for active play-based learning. You can make circles of different colors and have your child hop, run, skip, jump etc into the color you call out. Great gross motor and color recognition practice.  Use more advanced color names - such as fuschia, teal, periwinkle etc to make it more challenging.

What great ideas!  I'm going to get out the bubbles today!  And, waterdreamer - good idea on the photoshoot!  You could then use these pictures to make your son a book about his "adventures with mommy"!

Yesterday we went on a bug hunt.  Oooohh what a thrill!  Who would have ever guessed I'd ever happlily exclaim "Look!  There's a big worm on my plate!"
