French Immersion - Canada

Hi Everyone,

My son is now in a private school (Montessori). He is in JK right now.  We are planning to change school when he goes to SK. We would like to put him in a French immersion school. Having done early learning stuff with him, we believe French immersion is the best system for him.

How many of you have considered French immersion for your little ones?

What do you think about French immersion in our public school system?

Hello Elle,
I live in Ontario and we definitely put our little one to French Immersion. As far as I found out, they have kindergarten for 2 y.o and up as well. I think it is important to start as early as possible. I couldn't find any French speaking daycare before 2 y.o. but I think it is still ok if she will start learning another language at that age. We speak Russian at home and we have LR and LM lessons daily (in English) since she is 4 month old for now. I do speak French as well and I want my daughter to know at least 2 languages.

Where are you in Ontario? I am in Caledon.

It's great that you speak French as well. Do you consider a French school? Do you have one in your area?
We are a non-French family. Neither one of us speak the lagnauge but we do want our son to speak French. French Immersion does not start until Grade 1 in our area. I registered my son to a full year French class run by the City. It's fantastic. He enjoys French class more than his school.

I do agree with you that it's best if they start early. They pick up languages so naturally.

I live in Stoney Creek (Hamilton area). How old is your little one?
We have 2 French immersion near by: one in Burlington and one is Hamilton (Mountain area). They accept children from 2-2,5 y.o. I just called them recently.
We want our daughter to go to French school eventually after kindergarten, hopefully they will accept. I think the rule is that someone in a family have to speak French.

I am lucky because our neighbors also speak French and the wife is actually French teach so when my little one grow up a bit she can speak French with someone too

That's wonderful!  I wish I could send my son to a French school!
My son is 3 years and 10 months old. He started LR when he was a year and a half. We completed both LM/LR and now doing LMs.

Are you a full time Mom or on mat leave?
Hope I am not asking too much.

I am on mat.leave and still have 4 month to go.
I wonder how you continue after a year of LM/LR was done? Did you created flashcards in the software and use to download material from the site? I am just wondering what to do after it is finished.. I don't expect her to start reading at 1,5 year old even though it would be nice Do you have other material you use as well?

I downloaded contents from the Encyclopedic Knowledge category to teach my son. I created my own contents too. I have been trying to teach him Thai because it's my native language but he is not interested. 

I focus more on phonics and have been using Reading Bear with him.

For other reading materials, I don't have many. I use Key Words with Peter and Jane, and starfall book sets I ordered from Amazon. I mainly use LR to teach sight reading and Reading Bear to teach phonics.

For Math, I have tried Right Start with him but he is not into the "math game". He does not mind lessons from Marshmallow math, though.

Thanks, I might use it later on as well when she will grow up. Will see I guess So much to see, so much to do with them I want to teach her Russian but not sure if I want to do it myself. If I continue with her LM/LR English plus other activities like swimming etc., don't know how to find time for other things. Maybe later on..since we speak Russian, at least she will understand it but teaching to read is another chapter Have to involve grandparents

When my son was at home with me all the time, he spoke Thai better than English. Once he goes to school, he speaks less and less Thai. I am the only one who speaks Thai to him. His Dad only knows how to say Hello in Thai. :P
The good thing is my son understands everything I say. Only sometimes when I started nagging, then he turned his Thai listening ear off and pretended he did not understand a word I said..

In your case, it might be different because you both speak Russian and so do her grandparents. I bet she will be speaking both Russian and English..and later French!!

Hi Alla and Elle, I have been reading your posts. I live in Toronto have two kids and also run a home daycare. I have one little girl who I care for who is speaking three languages! She is four. Her mother speaks Italian exclusively to her,her father french/english and at daycare and Jk she
speaks english. She sometimes gets her words mixed up but is excellent in all three languages! I know that little reader has some french content available as I have used it to help my older kids with their french skills.
