When did you start with toothpaste? My daughter tried yesterday but was swallowing it. i taught her to spit it out but she swallow and then spits (nothing :-) Is she too young?

Teaching kids to brush teeth is more painful then potty training. I think you just teach them the right way, and hopefully it is not harmful all the toothpaste they eat. I am sure every kid eats their fair share of toothpaste and I haven't heard of anyone getting sick, so I do not worry about it.

I have used a training toothpaste ever since we started brushing. My son still swallows it, so I will not give him any fluoride until he learns to spit it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience about brushing your child teeth. It was very useful for me.I start brushing my child teeth but she doesn't like it.She is not staying still while I do it.I have to hold her head and arms because she is pushing me.I hope that she will  understand what we are doing and will stop protesting against brushing.

Yes, my daughter at first used to refuse also, I had to hold her arms . But I think she got used to me brushing her teeth that now she doesn't do that anymore(makes my life easier, I don't like to force her)I let het brush her teeh first,,,telling her is your turn and next will be mom's turn, It is funny when her dad tries to brush her teeth ,she doesn't let him, she is so used to me brushing her teeth, her dad cames to me saying OH OH She doesn't want me to help her....I say ok, I think I should go and help her.

Purchase a toothbrush that is age appropriate for your imitation coach purses. At the top of any child's toothbrush package, there is a general age range for that particular size. This is important because the toothbrush needs to be size appropriate for your child's mouth.

Seems tooth brushing is a habit kids need to start early, then it just seems strange NOT to brush at least once a day. My eldest daughter started brushing her self at 3-1/2, but my two youngest are a different story. I have to stand beside them, prepare the toothbrush, talk them through the process every night! I must have missed a beat somewhere with them.

Thanks for this topic!

At the very begining, she refused to brush her teeth.  When I sign the brush teeth song, she think it is playing game, she like to do so.  In addition, you can also brush your teeth together with your children and also buy good taste brush teeth gel and interesting brush. smile

I agree with Elysia- I think its important for our children to see us brushing our teeth.  I would brush my teeth in front of my son from the beginning - and he actively wanted to brush himself.  I allow him to pretend to brush his teeth himself first and then I brush his teeth for him.  He does swallow toothpaste but he is getting better and better at spitting.

Young children can't spit so they will swallow the toothpaste.  Make sure you're using children's toothpaste with 500ppm or non-fluoridated toothpaste and use only a pea sized amount.  Mash the paste into the brush before putting it into your child's mouth - this helps to minimise how much they swallow.

Swallowing a little bit of toothpaste is not harmful but be mindful of fluoride content of the toothpaste.  Excess fluoride can cause fluorosis - which starts off as white spots on the teeth.  In severe cases, the teeth become brownish and mottled.

There are some excellent babies and children's toothpastes that don't use fluoride but still offer protection against tooth decay.  "First Teeth" make a good baby toothpaste which has milk enzymes as an active.  Kodomo also make non-fluoridated toothpaste with xylitol.  Xylitol has been shown to be anti-cariogenic - it can reverse the process of early tooth decay.

As for tips to get your child to brush, I've blogged about this before - http://figur8.net/baby/2009/07/18/how-to-get-a-toddler-to-brush-his-teeth/

You really do have to start young to get them used to it.  Even if your child hates it - at the very least try to get the brush in and make a few swipes.  Alternatively, hand the brush over to your child and let him/her chew on it.  For babies, you can use a wash cloth to wipe the teeth - no toothpaste required.

Brushing is so important. Even if your child does not like it, it should not be avoided. I work as a pediatric dental assistant and I just spend my Friday afternoon in an operating room with children ranging from 18months to 5 years old, whos parents let them decided that they didn't want their teeth brushed. We had to crown and extract teeth on all of them. One poor baby was left with 4 of her 20 teeth because all the others were abcessed Sad Its heartbreaking
I tell all the parent that come into our office when they say their child doesn;t let them brush there teeth
Me:"Would you allow them not to have their bums wiped at diaper changing time"
Parent: "Of course not"
Me:"Well teeth care is just as important, if you don't wipe there bums they will get infection, if you don't brush their teeth they will get cavities or tooth infections. Same thing
Also fluoride tooth paste should NOT be used until the child can completely spit out.
Best of luck

We have tooth wipes, which is non flouride based and is apple flavoured (SWEET without sugars) and my baby LOVEs it! It's soothing for her gums when I rub my finger over her gums, AND she likes the taste! She was one tooth (and another little one just starting to peep out). My husband is a dental technologist, and we see the HORRORS of not brishing teeth and looking after teeth properly, so we are obsessed with dental hygiene.

The tooth wipes are great when they are very small, or to keep in your diaper bag for when you're going on a trip and can't brush in the car or on the road, and non flouride toothpaste with a small, soft toothbrush are the best.

We also bought my daughter a rubber toothbrush, with rubber bristles as a starter brush. This is gentle on her, AND has the added advantage of massaging her little gums.
