one of my cousin got a baby this week and are planning to visit them.
 what would be the best gift for them

Once I bought a beautiful bonsai tree and the mum was really appreciative as this was different from the traditional clothes/teddy bear and trees need to be nurtured, just like babies...

Necessary things! The things newborns require most is clothes and diapers etc. I think the best gift we got was a basket full of clothes in various different sizes. The clothes were tightly rolled and put in a large white wicker gift basket that could also be used in the babies room. The basket held a lot of clothes. It was kind of like a basket of fruit only filled with babies clothes.

I always make new moms a basket of baby stuff I had to send my bf out in the middle of the night to get like baby orjel, saline drops, baby tylenol, ovol drops. Plus some nice clothes(in bigger sizes). My favorite baby present was clothes that were too big, that way when my son started to our grow something, I already had something else for him to wear

My neighbor gave us a basket with stuff she thought were a must with a new born. Cloth diapers to use as a burp cloth, diapers, bud paste, wipes and baby powder (which we didn't use, since it is not recommened anymore, her girls are older  ). I thought it ws very thoughful of her to do that (even more becuase we had just moved in and I really didn't know her then  ) So just think of what stuff you couldn't be without with your baby and make a basket with it. One good thing to include if she is breastfeeding is either lanoli or conmfort gel pads.

If it is a cousin, then she wouldn't mind you asking her what she wants...Its better to ask what is needed and buy that...Else, she would be receiving a lot of the same item as gift from family/friends who visit her.

I really enjoyed getting outfits in larger sizes.  That way I still had cute outfits as my kids got a little bigger.  My oldest was 2 before I really had to start shopping!  Also, with larger sizes, they were able to wear them a llittle longer.  I had so many newborn outfits that some only got worn once or twice.

All those important things are great ideas...and if she doesn't have any of this stuff yet, you'll be a hero!

If you're looking to give something sentimental, I'd recommend a book.  Maybe a Bible, or a book that was special to you when you were a child.  Write a special message to the child and sign it.  Maybe tape in a photo of you and your family.

Another gift that I gave to my SIL when she had her baby was a mini photo album of the family (including them - the mom and the dad, and grandma, grandpa, aunties, uncles, the new baby's cousins....  You can buy soft plastic books with little sleeves to put the photos into.  My SIL LOVED it and it was a favourite for a LONG, LONG time!  She still comments on it and her child is two.

or educational board books which they can use over and over

It all depends on your and her budget. Besides everything said here which I agee with (cloth, diapers), I will add some educational toys or playmat the babys love. Also those cards with blach and red colors that call babies attention and finally music in different languages.

They would definitely appreciate it if you will give them new clothes for their baby or a stroller because it's one of the necessity of babies.

You can give affordable baby outfit, toys, shower gift baskets, blankets and other more stuffs what you like to give. As per my view affordable baby outfit is the ideal gift for the baby but choose the branded cloth.

For me it would be best if we can give things that is necessary for a baby such as clothes, diaper, vitamins or etc.
