First off I want to thank DadDude for sharing his Fleschcards with everyone.  My kids are crazy about them and frequently ask to play the game where I sound out a word then they guess it, even when we don’t have the cards with us.  The go through 40-100 cards a day, usually limited by my available time rather than by their attention.  I think that laminating the cards and allowing the twins to handle them has really piqued their interest in the cards.

Recently I peeked at future card sets and realized I’m getting close to the lost card sets.  I’m wondering if anyone would like to collaborate and recreate the missing sets?  I have ordered the book “Why Johnny Can’t Read” from the library and should be getting it soon.  My plan is to make up lists of the missing words and could really use some help tracking down the corresponding pictures.  TIA.

The nonprofit I'm working for has asked me to come up with a proposal to make a free, fancy Flash version of the entire set of Fleschcards.  Also an iPhone/iPad app.

The silent e card sets, yeah, those are not complete.  Also, there was a set that I printed out for ourselves and then it dropped.  So...

Of course, I'll make sure the whole set is there with the Flash site/app.  I can't tell you when this is going to be done, but I'll be under pressure to deliver quickly.  I can't even tell you DEFINITELY that it will be done, but I'm pretty sure it will.  My second child will be arriving in about a month, so we'll need it soon enough!

If it is successful, we'll use the platform I'm designing for a massive multimedia "children's encyclopedia," essentially my presentations, but "on steroids" with various useful options (and there will be a "flashcards" view of the presentations--using the same pictures, instead of full sentences, we'll have single words and, maybe, phrases).  I'm pretty excited about all this.

If you have any special requests for features, this is the time to tell me.

Thank you Daddude for your Fleshcards!

My little girl will be three in two weeks and she can read in large (overwhelming!) part due to your Fleshcards. I consider the definition of reading to be the ability to read words in other settings/formats/contexts and sounding out words she has never seen, but not just CVC words. We did the following:

- ABC flash cards, board books and songs from 9 months onward
- YBCR DVDs and cards and Starfall from 12 months
- LF fridge phonics and wordwhammer from 1 year
- Fleshcards from 2 years onward
- Phonics books including Nora Gaydos and various free internet ones and phonics wheels from 2 years onward

We have primarily concentrated on the short vowel CVC words and are cycling through all the short vowel CVCs for the third time. This cycle, we are staying on them for 1-2 weeks and bombarding ourselves with all of our other materials for the particular vowel being covered. We will soon move onward, so this update is great Daddude!

That is fantastic news DadDude I really hope the project gets approved.  It sounds like there aren’t as many missing cards as I originally thought, more great news.  I have the book on reserve anyway so I will be looking at it in the next few weeks.

Oooops, Daddude, I forgot to add that your Fleshcards are her favorite out of all the materials. For her second to almost third year of life we probably used them 70% of the time, as fridge phonics somewhat intimidates her. We used to tote around a stack with us when we were on the bus or at the doctor's office etc. We also looked at them when she woke up from her nap and this was at her own initiative "Mommy, I want to look at the cards"  or "Mommy, I want to hold the ____ card". With the latter, she would proceed to carry said card around for half the day  LOL

Bringing up this topic.

I have recently started using fleschcards with my daughter and she seems to like them. We only read these cards when she feels like and she has been making progress. She seems to remember most of the words after she has seen them a couple of times or so, but I don't think she actually reads them phonetically, I think she simply remembers what they look like. She knows the "drill", so she sounds out each letter and then blends them into a word, but sometimes after sounding out the letters correctly, she would blend the sounds into a wrong word. She has not been able to read an unseen word either.

She is quite a strong visual learner and she has been good with the whole-word approach. Her auditory processing is quite a challenge at the moment and I read somewhere that such kids may take longer to start reading phonics. Have you experienced something similar with your kids? Should I continue with the approach?

I will appreciate your opinion.

I'm excited that flashcards will available on both iPhone and iPad. I have my iPhone with me ALL the time so this would be helpful in waiting rooms or while waiting in line at the grocery store.

Hi LMsMum,
I have spent some time reading through your past posts to understand a little more about your DD.  My son also has sensory processing issues, mostly sensory seeking behavior, but auditory processing has been brought up by his OT as a possibility.  (We just had his anual review today and he has responded so well to speech therapy that he no longer qualifies for speech therapy.  smile He has responded very well to working on more eye contact.)  How is your DD's speach therapy coming along?  Does anything in her speech pattern indicate something similar to what you have seen with teaching phonics? (i.e. can pronounce individual phonemes but has difficulties stringing them together.)  How long have you been trying the fleschcards?  My DS can do do the Fleschcards so I don't have any BTDT advice, but I might suggest trying this special needs parenting forum for some ideas.

Hello Twinergy,

Thank you very much for your reply. I am glad your son has graduated from ST, congratulations!

We are actually having ours today, in less than three hours. LM is not yet at the age-appropriate level, so, in theory, we should qualify for more therapy, but as we live in the UK, where this help is very limited and restricted, you never know! We have only received 6 hours in total in a year and a half!

We are due an OT assessment, so that may give some more light on the matter.

I have only been trying fleschcards for about 2-3 weeks and I have to say they have been a great articulation exercise, as LM got to practice each sounds. So I can see this is beneficial, and she does seem to remember many of the words. My concern was more about whether this is the best method for her bearing in mind her learning style (big picture before details) and if, perhaps, there are some alternatives. I remember reading that fleschcards did not work for some parents on this forum and was wondering if they may have found another way.

Thank you also for the link to the forum, I will search it for ideas.

2-3 weeks isn’t very long, and it sounds like at least some words are sinking in.  It took my kids about a month to even try to blend the words so it sounds like you are ahead of us on that.  My inexpert opinion is to continue trying the Fleschcards a little longer, until you see her OT.  Working the OT has been very beneficial for us in understanding my DS’s behavior, maybe you can also gain some insight into your DD during this meeting.  I found this book which looks like a good resource, from reading the reviews it sounds like the book is helpful in understanding different suptypes of APD.  I also came up with a lot of hits when I did a google search for  "auditory processing disorder + teaching strategies."

Twinergy, thank you very much for your reply and the link to the book, and karma to you! It has been quite a rollercoaster trying to pinpoint what is LM’s problem, as each professional we have seen seems to have a different view. As her cognitive abilities are quite strong, opinions vary.  It looks like this book may be a good read before she is seen by the OT.

I will also continue with the fleschcards, as you suggested, and see if she picks it up. It could also be that perhaps, she needs to see very many CVC words before she is able figure out the phonics.

(By the way, my worries regarding LM’s SLT assessment earlier on were not groundless, as she will not be getting any more individual SLT. The system has changed and now her school nursery teachers will be required to undergo a training to be able to help her in school. I really don’t see it working very well as her school is not even on the register for training yet and I don’t think a short training will enable LM’s teachers to help her a lot. As I can’t afford private SLT, looks like I will be doing a lot of reading trying to help her!)
