Encyclopedic Knowledge Categories for FREE - made by all of us!

These 2 topics got me thinking about making a special effort to give you all more encyclopedic knowledge materials to teach your kids:

There seems to be a lot of demand, but the problem is that our resources are limited and we have to prioritize what we do with them.

So that got me thinking... How about we try to put together 'community-created' EK sets that will be created by everyone and produced by BrillKids, and best of all, available to everyone for free? (you'd need to have LR to play them back, although you could use the info to create Powerpoint versions of your own if you don't have LR).

We could hash out and finalize EK topics and the facts accompanying each topic on the EK board (or dedicated board), and once done, BrillKids will get the voice recordings done and source most of the pictures/videos (we may need some help there though).

Let me know what you guys think.  We'll need many volunteers for this!

No, you won't need LR to help.

If there is enough interest, I think we can open up a dedicated board, and first start a new topic to collect ideas about EK subjects.  Then we start opening up new topics for each subject, and everyone contributes ideas and resources to it, until it is ready to be made.

Then maybe someone (*cough* like Daddude *cough*) can help moderate or lead it and have the final say as to what goes into the final version, and then we start making them for release!

I think let's start with English, and then translations can follow later.

I think that is a great idea!
If everyone on the forum would participate and make at least one set, we would have plenty of material to show to our children!
Just would you, please, post simple and clear instructions how to do it for people that are not computer-savvy, like me!

Yes if I have simple to follow instructions, I would love to make a set or two. I don't think I'd be comfortable
recording my voice though... Lol. But I could do everything else

What a great great idea! I will definetly help with this project! Having problem not able to use LR for the last month (Mac related  ) but hoping to resolve it soon, and we do have some EK materials already that we would be happy to share!!!

We need to decide topics we will be covering
and for each topic, the set pictures and facts for associated with the picture.

eg. like this "Organs of the Human Body Encyclopedic Knowledge 1" or "Butterflies and Moths Encyclopedic Knowledge1-1"

There are many files in the EK categories but they are not having enough facts.
eg. World Landmarks or Great Investors ( Please forgive me I dont want to point out anyone. )

There are already about 136 files in the LR downloads EK category.
We can make these LR files to make it suitable for EK by adding facts. (With due permissions from
the creators of these files.)  I can help in his during weekends.

Also as KL mentioned we can post new topics and discuss those to create new EK files.

     The recording can be done by some other volunteers

    What type of materials do you have ? physical Cards / EK files (you created) /  .ppt files.

This is an EXCELLENT idea! Like another poster mentioned, there are limitations with the previously created EK files that don't have facts and the quality of the files is a big concern of mine, especially the voice quality. By using peer review and professional voicing, both of those issues would be resolved.

I am totally on board! And I agree, DadDude would be a great choice for a mod, he seems very knowledgeable on the subject. Not that I am volunteering him or anything.

DadDude can you be the moderator here please.

Lets go this way, ( I am just suggesting a way. if anyone has any other ideas on how to proceed please tell us)

we will maintain 2 lists on for Volunteers & other for Categories

So if some one adds to any of the 2 lists they should to append to the particular list.
(Copy these two lists and add their name/category to the corresponding list)

1. Each week every volunteer will take one category and will create topics and facts and will provides the
findings on the board with one week. ==> 1 week
2. We can have discussion those for next 2 weeks and will decide the final versions of it. Anyone (not just volunteers) can
participate in this discussion. ===> 2 weeks
3. After this,  the volunteers who can give us voice and who can create the EK files take this up for the
next week. ==> 1 week

So for each EK file we will have 4 weeks times.

Here the activities can go parallel. Like when one topic is in discussions (in state 2 above) the volunteers who will be
collecting facts can take another two topics for the next 2 weeks. and one more when EK files are created.

Please correct me if you think this will not work  or any suggestions/corrections.

The list I created is just a sample list.
Please add/remove to the lists above (making sure you are appending the list).

DadDude can you please add your suggestions.

Ok that sounds good. Now let's say I want to do a EK file on Marine animals. How many facts should we have about each animal? 5?10? What can LR handle?
