wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

JAK.  I downloaded the first attachment, and I see a speaker icon, but cannot hear anything when I click it - which tells me that it must be a linked soundclip, and not embedded directly.  Here is a little program that helps to embed mp3 files (smaller than .wav files) into ppt:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/mp3-addin-EM010257406.aspx

And the second attachment gives me this error message when I tried to download it > "404 - Attachment Not Found"

I tried to use .ppt before LR - and did not have patience to set up the shuffling/randomizing within the slideshow; especially with the number of sets/playlists needed:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/create-and-present-a-custom-show-HA010096698.aspx

and with LR it is a click of a button.  yes

Are you using the Doman method schedule? How many sets are you showing each day? And how often?  I followed the schedule exactly as described in the book:

http://www.gentlerevolution.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=G&Product_Code=0201-40&Category_Code=books-about-teaching-children

and usually showed 5 sets per day, at least 2 -3 times per day (1 - 2 times on the laptop and 1 time with actual flash cards that I printed out as 8.5 x 11 and put into page protectors inside of a binder).  They loved it and still get the binders out and "review" the lessons.

Thank you for the offer, when I get to Surah al-Baqara, I will let you know!

wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Hmmm - where is she located?  Is she in Russia?  Or where?  And if she can read the Arabic alphabet and pronounce it, as in reading words/phrases, then this would be helpful for her:  http://www.understandquran.com/dictionary/80-words/russian.html

Let me know where she is located and I will be better able to assist you, insha'Allah.

Baraaka Allahu feeki.

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu

No i don't have that book, inshaa'Allaah I will purchase it soon.  How many cards are there in each set?

is it 5 flash cards in one set,
show 5 sets a day,
2/3 times a day?

Inshaa'Allaah I will try that.

Im sorry the sound didnt work, and jazaakillaahu khayraa for the link.  The sound was just a recording of the qaaidah i found on the net and I split it up into smaller mp3 files and played them with each letter.  Just like you did with your version of the qaai'dah.

I have attached the second ppt as a pdf so that you can view it inshaa'Allaah,  it's just a sample of what I am showing to Maryam.

Take care ukhtee

wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Ahh.  So, you must be using the Arabic edition soundclips, that are recorded at a much faster rate of pronunciation, and meant for native speaking 'Arabs who are accustomed to the sounds and rhythms from being immersed in the language environment from birth.  I have both versions, and personally refer Sheikh Muhammad ar-Ra'ee's recitation, because it is purposefully recorded at a slower pace, due to his actual teaching experiences in America for over two decades in which he observed that non-native Arabic speaker's teaching approach has to be adapted slightly for us.

For the Doman reading book, I would recommend that you purchase, the 40th Anniversary edition, and you may read the 1st chapter online here:
http://www.gentlerevolution.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=G&Product_Code=0201-40

And here is a brief description of the method, that does not and cannot replace reading the book itself:
http://www.childandme.com/glenn-domans-method-teaching-baby-read-brief/

The schedule is rotating and I created a spreadsheet that shows how it flows from day to day, for each of the 5 steps.  I also tried to use whole words approach for teaching them Arabic - but it does not work, in my opinion, because the letters change forms depending on their position in the word, and the diacritics are above and below the words, which affect both pronunciation and meaning.  To understand how to visually read and pronounce the word, a reader must be taught to prior to teaching the words.  In actuality, Noorani is hte Doman reading method for Arabic.  While there are many readers, I preferred Noorani, because it is specifically created for learning to read/recite Qur'an with tajweed, of which the concepts are the same, and some of the tajweed rules, although not all, actually apply to fushaah/MSA.  Another issue is that most texts are written without tashkeel, but it is understood, because native speakers of Arabic have heard the words repeated in their natural language environment, whereas non-native speakers have not heard these words and do not know - and the diacritics are essential for knowing how to pronounce the words, as well as indicating proper grammar.  A nice article about it here:

http://readkutubkids.wordpress.com/2010/09/29/to-tashkeel-or-not-tashkeel/

I think of tashkeel as a training wheels until the words (sounds and meanings) are memorized in context, and then one an easily read without them.  And Rosetta Stone Arabic also has a feature that you can toggle in between showing the the words/text with tashkeel or without.

Your .pdf is nice, masha'Allah.  There are so many things similar to this that I want to create, and I have to remind myself to just focus on the Qur'anic vocabulary for the moment.  Just an observation, if you want to be a Doman purist, they recommend using only red first, and then switching to black at a certain stage of reading sentences.  However, I do know that the Titzer method of YBCR and Brillkids uses various colors in their  teaching formats.  Wa Allahu 'alim.

When I began teaching with English, I began with YBCR until I could create the English Doman reading materials in LR using only red, and by the time I had Noorani ready, they had already switched to black.  For the Qur'an, I currently use only black, and intend to create another set with color-coding to illustrate the tajweed rules more clear; although I rarely have them actually read from a color-coded mushaaf!  They only read from a traditional black script mushaaf, because the color-coding becomes a handicap later from learning the actual tajweed rules, which is why tajweed scholars warn against this type of mushaaf.  Yet, there is some benefit in this type of mushaaf in that it is good as a reference to the tajweed rules, to check your understanding of them as they occur in the text.  Wa Allahu 'alim.

Are you a native Arabic speaker?  And if so, from what region of the world?  How will you teach Arabic to your daughter?

Assalaamiu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu

Jazaakillaahu Khayraa for all that very beneficial information.

Im not an Arab, I live in Yorkshire, UK.  But I grew up in London.  I have completed the Madeenah books for arabic and some others.  I have also studied a lot of tajweed alhamdulillaah under somebody who has ijaazah so I understand the importance of keeping the tashkeel in the text as you said.

My dream is for my daughter to learn and speak in fushaa arabic and recite with the tajweed rules - and with Allaah lies success.  If I create a one-month arabic syllabus for my daughter, can you check it for me please?

wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Wa iyaaki.

Ahhh, masha'Allah.  The Madeenah books are too grammatical for me at this point.   blink   I have also studied basic tajweed under several Scholars with ijaazah in at least one rewaayah, and several have ijaazah in the 7 or 10 Qir'aat, masha'Allah.

May Allah (swt) grant our families and us the language of Paradise, while on earth, ameen.

Let me create a modified schedule for you, and then you can just input your words/phrases/etc. and it generates a playlist schedule for you.  I usually will create a LR category file as my master list, and then the daily playlists are the sets.

For you, since you are using .ppt, the .ppt file itself is your category file, and then you can create custom slide shows based on the daily sets schedule for it to work out the same, but you will have to randomize the order for each daily set for #2 and #3 sessions during the day (which is where I lost my patience and decided to use LR).  Although, you could print out the cards (and either laminate them or page protectors) and then just shuffle them yourself.

This takes a lot of organization and planning ahead - which is why I love LR!  It makes it easy to set everything up, although it is a few extra steps to make jpegs from the .ppt and then match up the mp3 files - and for me, it was easier than setting up the .ppt random slideshows.  In fact, LR was created because ppt was too cumbersome.

Give me a day or two and I will upload the schedule based on the Doman method steps, insha'Allah.

wa salaam 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

as salaam 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Do you by chance know how to fix this issue I am having.  I am creating .ppt with the words, and I save as jpegs, and some of the text is missing.  It can be seen in the attached jpeg with dhammah missing - but the .ppt has it clearly?!!   wacko

I also embedded the fonts as described here:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/avoid-missing-font-styles-in-powerpoint-HA001034824.aspx

And I also had this problem with the font from this website, where some of the text is cut off or missing when saved as a jpeg:

Wa `alaykumus salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

I have a CD which allows me to copy/paste directly from the madeenah mushaf straight into MS WORD.  Let me know which aayaat you need and I can send them to you inshaa'Allaah.

I am attaching a document with al-faatihah embeded with the method in the link that you provided.

BaarakAllaahu feeki for all that you do to help us.

as salaam 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Aha.  What is the name of the software, please, and where can I buy it online? (because I need the whole mushaaf).

I looked at the ppt and it is nice, masha'Allah.  My only concern is that the script itself appears a little flat; like the seen is not as defined (the teeth are short) compared to some other fonts, but it seems to be close to the original mushaaf.  The Othmany document and fonts I am using are a little more obvious in appearance.  I was also unable to copy/paste the text directly into LR, which means I would still have to save it as a png / tiff / jpeg and upload it into LR (along with a soundclip when I have them).  Is there a font that is selectable from your computer's font menu, so it would display in LR?

In my search, I did find this very article informative, and that png or tiff is better suited for text:

When and how to use internet image formats

Introduction

This image format guide is here to teach you how to use the correct image formats for the correct situation. I made this guide because I see a lot of people misusing image formats on the Internet - gif for photos, jpeg for Windows screencaps, and other inappropriate image format uses. This guide attempts to explain how each format works and when to use it and why. Yes, there is a lot of text here, but by the end you should know everything you need to about how to use the correct formats.

http://www.r1ch.net/img-formats/

and this was helpful as well:

http://www.scantips.com/basics9jb.html

And when I saved as tiff or png, I had the same results.  I posted my questions with the tech support and maybe they can help me figure this out, insha'Allah.  I really do not want to make custom slide shows - because it is 3x the playlists!  wacko

Baraaka Allahu feeki.
as salaam 'alaikum.

Wa `Alaykumus Salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

The software is called مصحف المدينة النبوية للنشر الحاسوبي
and yes ... you can select the font from the font menu.

Someone gave me the cd from madeenah as a gift, but I believe you can download it here: http://www.qurancomplex.org/MaterialCMS/viewSection.asp?matId=134&id=135&l=arb&matLang=arb&SecOrder=15&SubSecOrder=2

as salaam 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

When I checked the website, it appears in very strange text (attached), and I am uncertain what to download exactly.  rolleyes   And I have an English system running on Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit platform - so I hope it will work, insha'Allah.

as salaam 'alaikum again . . . also, i found a mistake in the othmany document, which the tanween is over the alif instead of the laam in Surah 093 al-Dhuha, ayah 7, word 2 (aDH-DHa-aaaaaa-lan) . . . and this is throughout the entire document . . i tried to locate the author of the document to no avail . . . unsure  - so , i don't want to have to "fix" it by retyping the words myself and having a slightly different font in the middle of an ayah . . . it is an incovenience; i just want to copy/paste, enlarge, add extra spaces and create a .png without any additional work!, insha'Allah . . .attached is an example of what i am describing . . . Jazaaki Allahu khaira . . .as salaam 'alaikum, Ayesha

InshaaAllaah then you can read the instructions properly.
