My husband is working on a presentation for our daughter and he is using different fonts for each slide. Now, the questions we came up with and couldn't come up with a final answer was:

Does it matter that when you use different fonts the "look" of some letters change? For example "a" and "g"
(can show you the other look since you can change the font here  confused ) but you know the "a" is just a circle with a little stick on the side.

Also, you could see this happening more often in books. So the word looks one way in a presentation and may look different once they see it in a book. wacko

Any ideas?  wacko

i would think that when you use different fonts you are showing the child that words can look different. you are saying that cat doesnt just look like this but it can look like that as well because of the way the letter a is written.

some kids just automatically learn phonics so i am sure that if they are shown a variety of fonts, their brains are probably wired to understand what it is.

the same way that i learnt how to read. the flashcards had the a written the other way but i could easily recognise it in the other type. i think it comes naturally to the kids.

if they were to learn that with cat maybe they could naturally realise it with other words that they havent seen in both types of fonts.

will do a problem solving technique with Sa'ad and let you know the outcome.

he reads my scribbly handwriting so will be an interesting experiment

Yep, what Fatima said.

Also, by showing them in different font styles, and even colors, you are showing your child the true essence of the word, and that stuff like color or writing style is irrelevant.

It's also similar to showing them words in upper case and lower case, or mixed. Or showing them pictures of different breeds of dog.  What you're saying is, "sometimes, a dog looks like this. But may also look like this. Or this. They are all dogs."  Except you don't have to say it out loud, they will intuit it themselves.

Thank you so much for your responses! It totally makes sense now  yes  I'm also glad, because we have a lot of materials that we would have had to re-print otherwise.

Thanks again  smile

I had the same concern when I first started. Now I just mix it up. I love that LR allows you to do this so easily! I use different fonts and colors on a regular basis. Like KL and Fatima said I think that kids just accept that the letters look different sometimes and get familiar with them all.

That was an issue that came up when I first began as well because along with powerpoints I made my own flashcards. Now that he is talking he shows me that he can read whether it is my handwriting or different fonts on powerpoint.

When I did my own flashcards (manually) a few months ago, I was not too meticulous regarding the size and shape of the letters. It was hard enough drawing very big letters and decided that my daughter would get a general idea of what each letters are meant to look like.
I remember seeing a video of Felicity (I think) whose Dad was quickly writing on a board. Amazingly enough it did not seem to make much difference to her!

I have my favorite font on LR that looks more like print writing and stick with it. I am planning to introduce other fonts once they are more confident with their reading.  yes

My son can read the words he knows if I write them myself. I think kids can recognize words no matter what font they are written in, as long as it isn't cursive or something.

By changing the fonts you are making it easier for the child to regonize there word in any book or everyday situation. Words are not always printed in one standard font. You are showing them that even thought the look changes slightly the word is still the same.

KL mentioned colours-visual learning aids can be beneficial. For example, using different colours to mark words as noun, verb or adjective can provide a simple and effective introduction to grammar.

That's a great idea, Chris!

In fact, I heard that sometimes Felicity could even recognize her Dad's atrocious scribbles!!  Wink

I love this idea! Not only can I teach my daughter right from the begging but ds tends to obseerve her lessons and it would help him as well.

How can you do this in LR? Can you change color of every file or even words in a phrase?

Fromwhat I can tell you can't change the font colour on just one word in LR. It must be a whole file colour change. That's too bad. It could still be done with a power point presentation though.
