Title: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 04, 2011, 03:15:12 AM Recently, there was a thread ( http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-encyclopedic-knowledge/great-video-in-gallery/msg66403/?topicseen#new (http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-encyclopedic-knowledge/great-video-in-gallery/msg66403/?topicseen#new)) about an AWESOME video done my one of the forum members. It is very much in the TW style and extremely well done. Also, what a GREAT idea!
I was hoping that if I could make a tutorial explaining the process, there would be other parents willing to form a group with me to make similar videos. We could collaborate on what subjects we would include so as to not overlap and share all of our videos. The more of us interested, the more videos we have for our little ones! So, who's in?? :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: TracyR4 on February 04, 2011, 03:19:00 AM If I knew how to do it, I would
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 04, 2011, 03:40:05 AM Awesome, Tracy!
I's really not technically complicated at all. My hubby and I will try to make up a tutorial over the weekend. Anyone else?? :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sashimani on February 04, 2011, 08:29:22 AM Count me as well.
So when are u planning to start? Sashi Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 04, 2011, 12:21:24 PM I would say we'll start as soon as we have...5 people?

Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 05, 2011, 02:30:14 AM Okay, so for all of us who are interested in participating, here is (based on the original forum posted video and TW's free preview video, here are the categories I came up with and what I though I might do for each:
Art – Works of Vincent Van Gogh Science – Minerals Culture – Canada (Location on map, flag, national symbols, national landmarks, provinces, provincial flags) Perfect Pitch - C (in whole note, half notes, and quarter notes) Vocabulary - North American Birds, Fruits, Arctic Animals, opposites (tall/short. short/long, wide/narrow, big/small, thick/thin) Math – Dots to ten, skip counting by twos to ten Phonics - “at” family words Whole Words – first 20 from dolch words Poetry – The Caterpillar by Christina G Rosetti Music – Musical instruments (different set from what was shown in Annisis' video), rhythm (ta, ta, teetee, ta), Composer portraits (Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bizet) World Language - Colours, shapes, farm animals, children's toys (I am not fluent in any other language – I will do French if nobody else wants it. If not, I can choose another and get a friend to record) Eye Tracking Geography – South American Countries Some questions for the group: - Would you like to include the soothing background music present in the original TW videos? - Would you like to include the "affirmations" TW has at the beginning and end of their lessons? - Would you each like to choose a world language and stick to that one through each video you make? - For rhythms, would you like to do the "real" names (whole, half, quarter, eighth, etc) or the common elementary names (too-oo, ta, tee-tee, ticka-ticka, etc)? - Are there any other categories that I am forgetting that you might like to add? - Would you like to have one person do all of the voice-over for consistency, or each do our own? Let me know your thoughts! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Ann2010 on February 05, 2011, 03:19:55 AM I am in
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 05, 2011, 07:33:04 AM Great everyone!
It looks like so far the interested parties are (though anyone else is still welcome!): Ann2010 tlyoung arvi sashimani TracyR4 lelask annisis So, if everyone could choose what they might like to do for each category and answer the questions following, we can get moving right along: Art – Science – Culture – Perfect Pitch - Vocabulary - Math – Phonics - Whole Words – Poetry – Music – World Language - Eye Tracking Geography – History - Some questions for the group: - Would you like to include the soothing background music present in the original TW videos? - Would you like to include the "affirmations" TW has at the beginning and end of their lessons? - Would you each like to choose a world language and stick to that one through each video you make? - For rhythms, would you like to do the "real" names (whole, half, quarter, eighth, etc) or the common elementary names (too-oo, ta, tee-tee, ticka-ticka, etc)? - Are there any other categories that I am forgetting that you might like to add? - Would you like to have one person do all of the voice-over for consistency, or each do our own? Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: lelask on February 05, 2011, 08:04:56 AM ok thanks Tracy, I am in.
For me is very crucial to know how to do it as I am not a PC genius lol . Just to make sure I will be able to help with it. Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Taz0819 on February 05, 2011, 01:50:38 PM This sounds great and I would love to be a part of it, but I'm really not very good at computer stuff. But if it really is simple enough and you still could use another person, I would like to help.
Heather Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 05, 2011, 10:47:32 PM Absolutely, Heather - the more the merrier!
Everyone can start choosing what they might like to do for their first video based on my example and we'll go from there. Don't worry "computer challenged" folks - I will make a tutorial! :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 05, 2011, 10:50:27 PM Can I make a suggestion for phonics?
If we will be covering word families then can we introduce the word ending itself first. I mean like this: first slide appears: a next slide: t next slide: a t next slide: a t next slide: at next slide: c at next slide: c at and finally: cat Does that make sense? So that we are teaching children how to sound out themselves? Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 05, 2011, 11:23:49 PM Here's my offering:
Art – Works by Picasso (How many works? Just 10?) Science – Cloud Classification Culture – Mexico World Religion - Hinduism Perfect Pitch – C# Vocabulary – Prepositions, small smaller smallest, big bigger biggest, tall-tallest, short-shortest Math – review dots to ten, continue to 15, count by 3’s to 15 Phonics – words ending in –ad, Montessori basic phonograms (ai, ie, oa, ue, ar, er, or, oo, ou, oy, ch, th, qu, wh, sh, ph) plus one word example per Whole Words – Second 20 Dolch words Poetry – “The Moon” by Mother Goose Music – clapping simple rhythms as percussion World Language – I can try some more Spanish… to be honest… I’m not fluent or anything Eye Tracking – circular movement Geography – North American Countries (are we just doing locations?) History – Prez of US 2 (continued from my first video) Does that sound ok? Anything else we're looking for? Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 05, 2011, 11:58:04 PM Annisis,
That sounds great! For geography, I think it makes the most sense to do just the locations. For art, I think it will be very difficult to choose 10, but that seems reasonable. :) As for the phonics families, that was EXACTLY my plan!! I didn't choose my History or World Religion sections. I will take: History: Greek Gods World Religion: Baha'i Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 06, 2011, 05:12:45 AM I got to thinking.... for Geography, should I finish the rest of the States of the US first?
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 06, 2011, 06:36:58 AM That would probably be a good idea, Annisis!
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 08, 2011, 10:29:56 PM Still waiting for everyone to sigh up for their topics...
:) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Ann2010 on February 08, 2011, 10:35:01 PM Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to help at this time.
Sorry :( Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 08, 2011, 11:32:04 PM Okay, Anne :) Thanks for letting me know!
If it helps, I don't think we'll expect the first video until the end of March. Let me know if you change your mind! :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: TracyR4 on February 09, 2011, 02:39:03 AM Art – Works of Picasso

Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 09, 2011, 03:03:45 AM Hi Tracy!
I think you may have forgot to replace some of the sections from my list with your selections! :) I'll put the ones that have to be changed in italics Art – Works of Picasso (already claimed by Annisis) Science – Culture – United States (Location on map, flag, national symbols, national landmarks, provinces, provincial flags) Perfect Pitch - G (in whole note, half notes, and quarter notes) Vocabulary - North American Birds, Fruits, Arctic Animals, opposites (tall/short. short/long, wide/narrow, big/small, thick/thin) Math – number words , skip counting by 10's Phonics - words ending in sh Whole Words – first 20 from dolch wordsThe 3rd 20 from dolch words are not yet taken Poetry – The Caterpillar by Christina G Rosetti Music – Musical instruments (different set from what was shown in Annisis' video), rhythm (ta, ta, teetee, ta), Composer portraits (Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bizet) World Language - Colours, shapes, farm animals, children's toys in English (sorry don't know how to speak any other language at the moment) No problem! If you want to just fin the images for your chosen World language categories and find the translations for the words, I can fin someone to do the voice-over. Eye Tracking Geography – European Countries I'm glad to have you involved! :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 09, 2011, 03:24:14 AM I am interested...I do not know if I have time to do it though...I would like to try... let me know what I can do... Are you going to be posting the videos as well?
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 09, 2011, 03:36:28 AM Christine,
I imagine we would post them... If you'd like to join, choose your topics - we would love to have you! We won't expect our first finished videos until end of March :) Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 09, 2011, 03:42:45 AM Okay, Sorry so excited...
I am def. on board to help. My question is how do we make this? Is it made by using powerpoint slide shows and then put into video format? If so I have many slide shows that can help. I have musical instruments according to type ie. percussion, string, woodwinds...ect. I have made slide shows of shapes, the seven continents, the US 50 states and captials, the US presidents. So maybe with the already made slide shows it can speed but the process a little. I was also thinking, that at some point it would be really great for us to make foreign language parts...like the video had spanish...we can add other languages ones each of us speak or know, it would really help those of us that want to teach our children multiple languages but can not afford all these expensive programs. I speak english, and a little very little spanish and italian enough to contribute to spanish and italian if you want to do that eventually. As of now My topics I choose is: Culture – United States (how many are we putting on? should I do them all and then whoever is putting the whole thing together take out what they want?) I will def. do the sates, their flag, their capital if you want? I can also do the state bird (if that is of interest to anyone :) ), National landmarks. Music – Musical instruments (different set from what was shown in Annisis' video), rhythm (ta, ta, teetee, ta), Composer portraits (Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bizet) I can do this but I do not know how to do the rhythm...so if anyone can help or do that part. Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 09, 2011, 04:33:34 AM Absolutely, Christine!
If you read through the rest of the tread, you will see what categories we plan to cover, as well as what topics have already been taken. :) You can grab the list of categories and go through what you already have and fill in your topics that way to make it easier (exactly what I did!). As for how we will do it, my plan was to use MovieMaker (a windows program) but I will figure out the equivalent for the Mac users...it's really as simple as putting your images/video on one track and your audio track on another. I look forward to seeing what you would like to cover! Glad to have you! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 09, 2011, 04:50:13 AM Okay, so I read through the complete tread, that is why i modified my post and it was a little crazy :clown: , I just got really excited
I love teaching my daughter and she loves learning and anything I can do to teach her I get super excited. I have windows live movie maker although I have never used it like that...I never knew how exactly...I know you can not transport a power point to it though. However, I think I will be able to use movie maker with no problem... I did, when my daughter was born have a program called scate but it did not work well, I was never able to publish the video and you had to pay for it. Anyway, I will be looking forward to a tutorial so I know exactly what I am doing. So again I will try to cover as much as I can in US culture and it wasn't listed but I will put the next presidents in. The music except for the rhythm because I am not sure how to do that. Glad to be here and help. I did look at TW and it is to expensive for me so this is great! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: NewMom27 on February 10, 2011, 12:23:02 AM Hi sarahjean ,
Can you please let me know how to make these video's ? I dont have any extra software in my computer. I am a non native english speaker . Please share the tutorial. Thanks Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 10, 2011, 03:24:49 AM Okay, so I looked at Windows Movie Maker on my computer and I can see how you can edit videos...I have even done that before. I can see how you can make a slide show of pictures. I do not see how you can make a video like the original video that was posted. I even looked up information on how to use the program on microsoft.com...all they show is how to make a slideshow of pictures really, not much else. I do not know how to use this program at the moment so can someone please help those of us that do not know. I was really excitied but now I am confused and feeling a little bit defeated already :( . So please share how to use the program so I can try to get started. 8)
Thanks :D Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: TracyR4 on February 10, 2011, 03:36:52 AM Hi Tracy! Post by: TracyR4 on February 10, 2011, 03:43:08 AM Sorry about that. I was multitasking when I typed everything out. I fixed everything up above.
I will need the list of the 3rd list of 20 sight words that you would like Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 10, 2011, 04:58:04 PM Awesome, Tracy!
That looks great (though you forgot to change your music! lol). I would suggest that you go ahead and start gathering images (the better quality you can find, the better) an keeping them all in a folder. I'll show you how to make the word portion and put everything together once a few more people have signed up for their topics. Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Anyone interested? Post by: linzy on February 11, 2011, 03:36:37 AM I did one about 2 years ago I used Photo Story 3 for windows. It was free and pretty easy, but I got too busy to do more. Here is a sample.
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 11, 2011, 07:52:46 PM Since it was I that suggested we add World Religion to list, I thought it might be helpful to post the POI list that I created for the topic. (I plan on making books out of photo books for Josiah based on these POI)
POI (per religion) 1 basic definition 2 founder/iconic figure 3 place of worship 4 name of scripture and language 5 primary teachings (ie. 10 commandments) 6 afterlife beliefs 7 distinctive tradition 8 number of followers presently and year founded 9 denominations? Countries? And what I've found, these are the most influential modern religions, presently: Major Religions HInduism Judaism Zoroastrianism Buddhism Shinto Confucianism Jainism Taoism Christianity Islam Sikhism Baha'i I will be doing Hinduism and sarahjean will be doing Baha'i. I wonder sarahjean, if it might be easier to post a list like this for each topic, to avoid confusion and help everyone in their direction? Coming up with topics off the top of your head can be a little intimidating for some. Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 11, 2011, 08:00:07 PM And another question: Will we be doing photo eye play during the poetry recite?
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 11, 2011, 08:05:49 PM That's a good idea, Annisis. Not many people have really signed up for topics... Since you seem to be really keen to get things going (as am I), is there some way we can chat online to work out details like this? Perhaps if you have Skype, MSN, etc. you could PM me with yourcontact and we could do some brainstorming there?
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: omimama on February 12, 2011, 02:08:45 AM I've been following this thread and would like to get involved. I have a 26 month old and we've been doing LR for about a year now. I haven't been as diligent as I use to be with her, but I would like to get back on the wagon.
My trouble is coming up with the topic info. I have a Mac, so I'm really good with iMovie. But I get brain freeze when it comes to subject matter, not knowing where to start. I'd be willing to put things together if I could get some help with content. Let me know your thoughts or if you have any suggestions for how to decide what to show. Is there a formula to follow? Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 12, 2011, 02:18:28 AM omimama,
There is a bit of a formula, as you can see in the rest of the thread, but annisis and I will get together this weekend to make it even more detailed and easy for people to follow. If you'd like, I can ever choose a set of topics for you. I just wanted to give people the chance to volunteer for topics that would be easiest for them to do. I'm so glad to have you involved! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 25, 2011, 12:25:15 AM Just wondering if anyone else is still working on this? Haven't heard anything, so I am wondering if I am the only one still working on this.
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: sarahjean on February 26, 2011, 11:15:01 PM Hi!
Sorry for the delay - I just got back from having a baby! We are in the process of simplifying for those who were overwhelmed and will be back with more details within the week! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Blooming_Brilliant on February 27, 2011, 12:47:20 AM It is fine.... :D CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition!!! I am still doing work on it I was just wondering. Congrats again!
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on February 27, 2011, 08:03:55 PM Yes, we're still working. In addition to sarahjean's new little one, my whole family has been sick all week. So, it's been a little crazy all around. We hope to have it all going soon. Give us another week or so and we should be in full motion!
And congrats sarahjean! Bet you're exhausted! Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Kballent on April 21, 2011, 06:47:27 PM I would love to help if someone would show me how. :)
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: annisis on April 23, 2011, 03:46:25 AM Unfortunately, I'm out. Since we've gotten pregnant, I barely have the energy to keep up my little guy's education and to eat. I'm afraid I won't be much use. Good luck!
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: DannyandAmy on April 26, 2011, 01:58:29 AM I'm in! Would love the tutorial! I could learn how to do it now, and after our move to PA in June we'll be able to be of some use!
Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Kballent on July 22, 2011, 02:46:34 PM I finally made a super short video! Gathering the images for the slides was a lot harder than I would have anticipated. I was worried about violating copyright laws. I would love to know what others have done to get around it.
Here is a link to it: http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-first-movie.html Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? Post by: Skylark on July 22, 2011, 05:15:59 PM Kballent,
Your video is EXCELLENT! Great job! For slides, photos. I have variety of stock photos/pictures that I have purchased over the years for different layout projects. But of course it would have time to look through them and find what is needed, also I have some things from my husband ( who is a professional photographer). I am extremely busy right now, but in about a month, may be we can do something together, lets talk about it, I will PM you with details, Ok? Title: Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested?
