Title: Anyone use Bob books?
Post by: Ayesha Nicole on September 17, 2011, 01:17:02 AM
Hi there.  My children are about to finish this phonics program:

http://www.eyeqadvantage.com/education/index.cfm?page_id=683

and I wonder if these books are the next best step?

http://bobbooks.com/

Has anyone used them? or what else is recommended to continue their reading program?

Thanks.

Hi, I used bob books and my son enjoyed them.  I liked the idea of words being grouped to introduce phonics and encouraging my son to read "the whole book".  When I first saw the books, I didn't think the pictures were great, but the children seem to have enjoyed them anyway!
The first set is quite simple - and might be too basic if you have already been through the phonics programme...

Another reading programme we have used is Oxford Reading Tree - not necessarily phonics based, but all children seem to love the characters and I thoroughly recommend it.  There are some free ebooks available here: http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

I bought four of the collections of Bob Books for my kids from Costco. They were $10  for each collection and like km276 I didn't think they were all that great looking. My kids really loved them though and it was one of the first books my then 2 year old(she just turned 3) could read. The Bob Books words and pictures may be simple but it made a huge impact on my daughter because was so proud of the fact that she could read it all on her own. It made a Big difference for her. After that she wanted to read all the time. My kids really enjoy reading all of the Bob books now and they're short, easy, and fun, so I would recommend them to anyone.  This is a video of my daughter reading the first Bob Book Mat.

I got the Sight Words Grade 1 set and my daughter liked them.  We didn't use them for long because they are easy readers, but that is exactly why we got them.  You can see her reading them here.

We would try to read one a day when my son was 2-3. They were nice and short and once he started getting good at them he moved into the easy readers at the library no problem.
