Title: IMPORTANT: About sharing BrillKids Software license keys
Post by: Kezia on January 22, 2013, 08:50:15 AM
Hi everyone! We noticed that questions about sharing Little Reader, Little Math or Little Musician license keys have been raised quite a few times already, and some of you might be wondering about the same thing too.

To answer this particular issue, we'd like to remind everyone about a specific section in our BrillKids Software End-User License Agreement (EULA), which you've also seen in one of the install wizard screens (for Little Reader, Little Math and Little Musician):

Provided you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA, BrillKids grants you (the license owner) a PERSONAL, non-transferable license to use BrillKids Software solely for personal, non-commercial use on two computers, or be installed on two workstations used simultaneously.

BrillKids Software shall not be used for commercial or production purposes and may only be installed on personally owned computers that do not belong to any business or institution and are not used by or on behalf of any business or institution.

This license expressly prohibits: (a) any direct or indirect monetary benefit from the use of BrillKids Software, (b) the use of BrillKids Software within the context of a home-based or part-time business, and (c) the use of BrillKids Software for any commercial, business, governmental, or institutional purpose (including educational and not-for-profit) of any kind.

This means that no one may use a BrillKids Software license key which is attached to a someone else's BrillKids Account and that each BrillKids Software license key must only be used to activate the software in (up to) 2 computers that are owned or used by the license key owner.  They are NOT MEANT TO BE SHARED.

We (and our partners worldwide) only entertain technical support inquiries directly from license key owners, and we do not support redistribution or "sharing" of license keys in such a manner.

Anyone who redistributes or shares his or her Little Reader, Little Math, and Little Musician license keys is in direct violation of our EULA and will therefore risk (1) termination of all license keys in question and (2) cancellation of his or her BrillKids Account.

Kindly note our Little Reader Touch app comes with a similar EULA as well - only Little Reader license key owners may use iAccess for Little Reader Touch on (up to) 3 iOS devices (iPad, iPhone or iPod touch) that are owned or used by the license key owner.

We hope you understand that the EULA was put in place not just to protect our data but to protect YOUR data as well.  :)

In case you have questions or concerns about possible unauthorized use of your BrillKids Software license key, please do not hesitate to contact BrillKids Support through our online contact form (http://support.brillkids.com/anonymous_requests/new) or via email at support[at]brillkids[dot]com.

Thanks, I must admit I didn't really read that, but knew that I would never share a license key anyways.

Well, I have one free LR license key. May be I can donate it to someone? It's a pity that it will just evaporate unused :D

The program only comes with one license key  :) , and it is a courtesy of developers that they make it possible to install it on alternative computer should the need arise. Rarely you would find company that would do so without additional fees. This has been a tremendous blessing for us to have that option  , as we take turns with my husband teaching the kids.

On another note, BrillKids donates its programs to those who are truly in need and can not afford them! Check out the Early Education for Every Child website -- www.eeecf.org - and what you will see there only a part of people and sites that were helped!

For every product that someone legitimately buys, this also funds BrillKids charity work, but another thing is also true - when someone cheats the developer, they are figuratively cheating a child who can't afford the program out of this benefit... More then 10 000 children worldwide were helped through EEECF last year...

We use to install one code on my parents computer during the summer when me and the kids are their a lot. It is ONLY used for my children since they are the only grandchildren.  Im assuming that's still ok? I dont want to have my account shut down.

Waterdreamer, yes this is OK. That is an example how it can be used

That's true Waterdreamer, and thanks Natalie for clarifying that. :)

We decided a long time ago to allow users to install on two computers (most OS, antivirus, and even office applications will only offer installation and activation on ONE computer) since we do understand that most households will have at least two computers they will need to install on. What was mentioned earlier is a great example: kids stay at home for a part of the year, and vacation or travel to relatives for the other, and it would be great if their learning programs were available at both locations.

Enabling people to even manage activation records was a decision we made later on, since we realized that at this day and age, people change their computer hardware very often (some even do it once or twice a year). So we figured it would be a nice gift to allow people to manage their own records if this is needed.

 Of course, there are limitations. For example, you can only remove your activation records 5 times and you can only have 2 activated instances of a program at a time. These limitations are set to protect not only the integrity of your software, but to also protect you - our loyal patrons - who have allowed us into your lives by teaching your children with our programs and by joining us here in this online community.

As with all software, and many other things these days, piracy is a very big issue. On one hand, it's great to make something as important as an educational tool available for the whole of the world at no cost; but it's also another thing to belittle all the hard work and love a number of people put into them to make them worth buying. Development - even maintenance of our programs, sites and services - do come at a cost, so in order for us to continue serving you and developing programs which (hopefully) you will love for years to come, we offer them for a reasonable fee.

We also believe in giving our programs to those who need them the most, which is why we established the Early Education for Every Child Foundation - the organization which we, at the moment, solely fund to enable underprivileged communities to enjoy our programs.

So please, don't take this announcement to heart and think that we are taking something away from you by announcing something which has been in our EULA (End User License Agreement) since we first launched our programs. It's just our way of warning those who may have the intent of violating the agreement, and a means to educate those of you who already have the programs about what you bought into originally.

I hope this helps clarify the need for this announcement. And as always, thank you all so much for understanding.

Hi Team ,
Having one more licence to install has helped us a great deal .
We have one with our desktop and one in our laptop and when ever we travel even for holidays we could catch up .
Plus my daughter loves it and thinks its fun time and LR makes her feel that things are normal even on holidays ..
So it would be great if that facility is used good and not removed .

More over a product such as this takes a lot of time from every one's part (making , maintaining and servicing customers) and Am of the opinion not to let all that hard work go for free ..

So let us join together and help promote the product and may be promote it even to get even more ppl BUY the product than giving away our extra key if not used ..

This is solely my opinion .. and I for one still like to have 2 licence keys since Iam using both of them !!!

Hi Team ,
I just read one point here - about removing activation only for 5 times ..

Where do i check that ??

Coz you know how windows get corrupted often .. so i might have installed and re installed 2 - 3 times in the same laptop and am not sure how many times I did that .. Is there any way I could see the activation removal ..

Also in future can you add a feature where it can all n number of actiavtion for the same machine .. or laptop and not consider as deactivation ..

Its just a thought coz .. I re-install windows .. min 3 times a year .. this has been the scenario for the past 5 - 6 years .. No matter how I protect it !!!!

Let me know if you have any suggestions for this ...

Hi Shanksa!

You can actually already see your number of activation removals in your Account page:
http://www.brillkids.com/user/acct-mgmt-purchases.php/Little-Reader-License.php
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6795108/bk-activations.png)

The way the activation works is that it will be considered a "new" activation when you install it on a new system. This includes existing computers which you change operating systems on or reinstalling (because it's literally a whole new system change because it's a virtual "wipe") or if you decide to change something integral to your existing system like a new motherboard, or processor.

If - for example - you installed Little Reader on a laptop, uninstalled it, and then installed it again and activated on the exact same laptop, then it only counts as one. Our server will recognize that it's an existing activation record.

We can, of course, entertain requests to reset or add to the limit, provided that when we look into the activation records there aren't any suspicious activity like multiple IPs and multiple computer names activating the same key.  :nowink:

Hello,

Can you please look at reseting mine? The one removal was from my old laptop that died, and the other was off my mom's laptop that also died.

Thank-you

I've also had to deactivate numerous times after one laptop gave out on us and our current one has given us some problems.

Also when I removed it to reinstall the new version of LR correctly it was  not recognized for some reason.  My LR has one more deactivation than LM and LMs.

I have never used the second activation for any of the programs.

Thanks

Hi all -

Resetting before the limit isn't really necessary, and it creates a load on our support systems to do this, which is why we won't do this for those who aren't even maxed out. We can entertain them (for those maxed out) on a case to case basis and this requires investigation, so please don't request for these unnecessarily. Kindly check my post above on how you can check your activation numbers.

We also cannot entertain these requests via forum posts. If you need to make requests such as these, please create support tickets using the help link on the upper right hand corner of this page. Again, a reminder, please don't request for these unnecessarily. Thank you!

I have always kept Little Reader and Little Math installed on my laptop even though my son has out grown it.
And this time after I installed it the laptop crashed and I had to reinstall and now its saying removal limit reached.
I can honestly say my copy has not been used in another laptop other than mine, but this is my 3rd laptop since I started using brillkids. (am not rich, using second hand ones thus getting it broken, my whole collection got lost with the first hard :( )

PS. I lost count of the times I have formatted laptops...
So requesting for another...

Hi Kyles Mom, that's definitely a valid case, so don't worry about it! We've just reset the remove counts for your Little Reader license key -  you should be able to remove your old activations again now.

Hmm.. from our records you haven't removed your Little Math activations before (the remove count is still 0).

Kindly try updating your Little Math (or install the latest one) and then check if you are able to activate your license key. You can download the installer for the latest version here. (http://www.brillkids.com/user/acct-mgmt-purchases.php/Little-Math-Software.php)

In case you need further assistance, please email us at support[at]brillkids[dot]com.

Hi Kyles Mom! We've just reset your activation remove count for your key - please check again now.

BTW, just to clarify for everyone: Even if you reached the maximum remove count (5 times) and you currently have no activated LR/LMh/LMs installation, you can still go ahead and activate your program. You just wont be able to remove any new activations until your remove count has been reset.

Again, to request for a remove count reset or for further help on activation problems, please write to support[at]brillkids[dot]com (or PM any Forum admin).
