This is exciting! Which version of French is it? That is, the French as it is used and pronounced in France or in Quebec?

Hiya

Will the content also be available through the iAccess app on the iPad once it's been paid for?

Thanks
BT

Hi BT, yes, the French curriculum will eventually be available on Little Reader Touch through iAccess. At the moment the iOS version of the content isn't ready yet, so it will be released in the app's Download Lessons screen a bit later on.

Also, I'd like to clarify that iAccess is a one-time purchase - enabling it once will work for all the Little Reader (PC) license keys you own, including those that you will buy in the future.

I just heard our school offers French Immersion Program from 1st grade and was wondering how to help my son get prepared ahead of time. He will be in kindergarten this September. This just comes on time!!!
BTW will BK offer 10% off any time soon?

become an affiliate and you can use your own code to get 10% off.

EDIT: It doesn't appear to work, maybe I am wrong about that.

Hmmmmmmm I saw the email about this earlier and have been going back and forth about teaching Cayden a 4th language that I don't know.
I am seriously considering it just bc of this release.  The value of the program for the price is amazing.  Plus I know it will work.

Hello everyone! :)

The French Trial is 127MB

We're sorry about the trial links not working! Something went wrong in the programming last week, so the trial link got changed as a result.

For now, please download the trial through THIS LINK (http://d2ohm1zpbx4in2.cloudfront.net/softwares/little-reader-content/BK-fr01-Trial-v3.lrp).

We apologize for the inconvenience, and we thank you oh so very much for your continued patience!

Hi, i dowloaded the french trial. But it tells me :

Imported files are incompatible with current version of appication.  Please update your application to the latest version.

The free trial i uploaded was last week.  It was either in english or in chinese.   So i erased the software from my computer to reinstal.

I went to redownload the little reader software. it sends me to:there was a problem page and i cant download.   :(

Getting discouraged,  what am i doing wrong?

Title: Re: French Curriculum available now for Little Reader!

Hi marymoi, yes, the French trial content (and even the full curriculum) is only compatible with the latest Little Reader software version, which is v3.1.1240.

Our server was down for a few hours yesterday, so perhaps you were downloading the installer during that down time. We apologize for the inconvenience that has caused.

Kindly try downloading the Little Reader installer again and it should work properly now.

Do you have any idea when we will be able to access the French curriculum on the iPad? I really want it for my big girls but it will have to be on the iPad. The que on the computer is already too long! Just curious if it will be sooner or much later?

Hi everyone! :)

I'm afraid that it may still take some time to release the French Curriculum for the iPad. It requires reformatting the whole curriculum to be compatible with iOS devices, so it'll take a bit. Before we release the French Curriculum for the iPad though, the good news is that we are in the final stages of touching up an update to the Little Reader Touch app, so you can all finally play the lessons using the game mode.

More updates to come soon, but rest assured we're working on great things for all of you!

My husband wanted me to try the trial French curriculum before we made the purchase.  I wanted to share a video taken after two days of the trial lessons.  He has not been exposed to this language.  And now I must go lay our camera to rest since it met with an unfortunate tumble through the staircase railing.

Yes, the French curriculum is awesome! We tested it out and my kids were able to pick it the words so quickly, the games feature makes a *huge* difference! We love that feature!

Ok you have talked me into it, Im going to trail the french curriculum now also!

I don't understand why the Chinese (simp) trial doesnt have all the games and extra features, that would really good also.

Does the French curriculum also teach the gender of nouns? If so, when is gender introduced?

Just asking, since I noticed that the words are genderless in the video posted by Mela Bala and I had just recently read the following post http://non-nativebilingualadventure.blogspot.com/2013/03/my-29-month-old-daughter-just-corrected.html (after seeing the blog linked in another BrillKids forum post), which brought home to me the benefits of introducing a second language early to children...that they can get the gender of words "hard-wired" into their brains so that they don't have to think about it, unlike those of us who learned languages later in life.

Kiwimum,
The Chinese curriculum has not been updated to the new version yet.  To play the games I just click on session 1 or 2 and then at the bottom of the screen in the middle I click on the word game.  It asks the questions in English but says the lesson words in Chinese.
I didn't plan on teaching him French but since he has had so much success with Chinese and English BrillKid programs thought I'd give it a try.  He loves it.  :)

Elaida,
I have no idea since I don't know French myself.

Title: Re: French Curriculum available now for Little Reader!
Post by: Kezia on April 03, 2013, 03:05:22 AM
@kiwimum: Yes, what Mela said. We're still working on the v3 changes for the Chinese curriculum, and that's why the Chinese trial content isn't updated yet. You may indeed use the Game mode even for the Chinese lessons, although the game prompts will still be in English. If you can speak Chinese (or if you know someone who does), you can create your own game preset which has Chinese recordings for the prompts and use that preset when playing a game with the Chinese lessons.

@elaida: For the French curriculum, nouns are initially shown without the "le" or "la" article, just like what is shown in Mela's video. However when those words are shown again in the curriculum for the corresponding review lessons, the words will be re-introduced with the gender-indicating "le" or "la" articles. It is true, though, that the French trial content doesn't cover any of the gender-specific nouns - we'll look into updating the trial content so that it will also include the "Le/La" categories for the sample lessons.

I'm not a native French speaker myself, so to all native speakers out there please feel free to pitch in with a more detailed explanation!  :D

For those who already have the French curriculum: In case you prefer to show words with the "le" or "la" article from the start, you are free to play the actual "Le/La" category from Play & Edit > Categories. Under each French Semester's "General Categories" folder you'll find a "Le/La" folder which contains all the categories that have the gender-specific versions of the nouns.

We are loving the French curriculum. My oldest has never shown much interest in languages, and we have tried quite a number of DVDs and other online French lessons but she never seemed interested and did not learn a huge amount.  But after only a few days she is now learning and speaking French words!

Is there a transcript or translation for the sentences used with the images? I would like to be sure I'm translating these bits accurately.

Can I change le/la for the daily shown course? I studied french in school and I think it's very important to see the articles right from the start. Apart from that it sounds wierd to hear the words without articles, because there is a rule saying that you should always use one, nouns are never alone. Or am I wrong?
:)

Hi maweri, we just replied to your support request, please check your email.

In case anyone else wants to use only "Le / La" nouns in the French lessons, do note that what you're trying to do involves editing the entire French curriculum. In case you want to revert to the original curriculum later on, you will need to redo all your changes, or you may simply re-download your French curriculum content.

To edit your French curriculum, just follow these steps:

1. Open Little Reader and go to the PLAY & EDIT screen.

2. Click on the "Courses" button and select "BrillKids French Semester 1" from the Display dropdown list.

3. Click on the Edit button to open the Edit Course window.

4. Go to the "Session 1" tab, then select the "Multisensory 1" sub-tab (located in the left side of the window).

5. Take note of the categories listed inside the "Category List" box as you'll want to keep the same order of categories. Click on the "Edit Category List" button when you're ready to apply the changes.

6. In the Edit Category List window, select the "Le / La" category from the left-hand box that corresponds with the original one in the right-hand box, then click on the "->" (right arrow) button. (e.g., "[FR] Common Animals 2 (rev)")

** All "Le / La" categories are filed under BK French Course > Semester 1 Categories > General Categories > Le / La.

** The category you added will appear at the end of the category list, so just move the category to the correct place in the list. You can use the Top / Up / Down / Bottom buttons on the right side of the window, or you may simply drag-and-drop the category up or down the list.

7. Select the original category (e.g., "[FR] Common Animals 2") then click on the "<-" (left arrow) button to remove it from the category list.

8. Repeat Steps 6 to 7 for the rest of the categories that you need to replace.

9. Go to the "Mutisensory 2" sub-tab and repeat Steps 6 to 8, and do the same in the "Multisensory 3" sub-tab.

10. Next, go to the "Session 2" tab and repeat Steps 4 to 9.

11. When you're done, click on the Save button, then click on the Close button.

12. When asked if you "want to generate lessons now," choose YES.

13. Finally, select "BrillKids French Semester 2" and repeat Steps 3 to 12.

Once Little Reader has finished re-generating your courses, you may continue playing your lessons with the changes applied.

Hello everyone, in case some of you are looking for the French courses in the Little Reader Touch app (LRT), please be advised that you may download the French courses through iAccess now.

First off, kindly make sure you have the latest app version (v2.3.1) that was released last August 5th, because the French content is not supported in the old app versions. For help on checking your LRT app version, see: How to Check your Little Reader Touch app version (http://support.brillkids.com/entries/21430202-How-to-Check-Your-Little-Reader-Touch-App-Version)

If you already have iAccess, please follow these steps:

iPad users: Go to LRT's Download Lessons > Courses screen, then tap the "▶" (right arrow) button until you reach the last page to download French Sem 1 and/or 2

iPhone / iPod touch users: Go to LRT's Download Lessons > Courses screen, scroll down and tap "Show more..." until you see the French Sem 1 and 2 courses.

**TIP: You can also use the Search function in the Download Lessons screen by typing in "French"

If you don't have iAccess yet, you can buy it from our online store (http://user.brillkids.com/onlinestore). Click here for instructions on how to enable iAccess (http://support.brillkids.com/entries/21268593-How-to-enable-iAccess-for-Little-Reader-Touch).

In case you experience problems during the download, do try our suggestions here as an initial solution: What to Do When You Have Problems Downloading Courses on Little Reader Touch (http://support.brillkids.com/entries/21388983-What-to-Do-When-You-Have-Problems-Downloading-Courses-on-Little-Reader-Touch)

Hi Lappy,

Thank you for your answer. I just tried to download it. And it is now on my laptop, but I can't bring it in my Little Reader prorgam. My laptop tells me always: "Unable to import the content file. Please try it again."

I don't know what to do now to install the trial version of french and chinese.

Best regards,

That's great that the French Curriculum is now available on the iPad. Thank you!
Is there any ETA for when we would be able to play a modified version on the iPad (i.e., a version with le/la throughout)?
My understanding is that the iAccess can only play courses from BrillKids as is without any changes, but please let me know if I am wrong.
