Title: Hello Everyone!
Post by: Lappy on May 20, 2008, 07:57:52 AM
Hey everyone!

My name is Lappy, and I'm the go-to-gal for anything related to our BrillKids learning software (http://www.brillkids.com/).

I'm married, and though I'm not a mom just yet, I'm interested in topics related to early childhood education.  My husband and I plan on having a baby sometime in the next couple of years, and since I'm the type of person who likes getting ready for things, I love reading factoids and tidbits about pregnancy, birth and child-rearing.  I love kids too [who doesn't? (http://forum.brillkids.com/richedit/smileys/YahooIM/8.gif)] and I believe in keeping an open mind about new developments on how we can raise them to be better people.

To be honest, I'm quite excited to meet all of you so we can talk about what you think of our products and how we can improve on them.  I love the fact that what we do can help parents and kids everywhere, and hopefully soon I'll be hearing from you so we can talk about your wish lists for educational products that we can develop in the future. (http://forum.brillkids.com/richedit/smileys/YahooIM/3.gif)

See you in the forums, and don't hesitate to PM (http://forum.brillkids.com/pm/?sa=send) me if you've got questions on how to get around.

Cheers,

Lappy

Dear Lappy,

I'm from Indonesia, my real name is Wahyu, and I have one daughter, her age is 2 years and 5 month, and my wife is pregnant now, the pregnancy is 3 month.

I have already trying the little reader, and I think this is a great tools that helping us to play together with our child while learning languange.

Of course teaching foreign languange to our children is good thing to do, but I think that if we could teach our children to speak our own language first before other language is better, so could you give us the way to create just the content (I means not the multimedia, but the sound and the word) in our language, that is Indonesian language ????

And I hope I could make a group of parents in my neighbours to share about early education for our babies and using such a great tools like little reader.

Thankyou

Best Regards

Wahyu

Hi there everyone!  Isn't this such fun?  We came across the program quite by chance, I was helping do some research for a friend who has a special needs child and wants to teach him to read.  We hope that we can get enough points to win a free Little Reader to help him...  It is a little scary getting started, but have posted my first download today.  It is African Animals and although there have been lots on it - the pictures are quite natural and in the African bush and could be added to your Animals Category even as a second picture.  My next lot have got some stunning pictures, I can say that as a friend of ours took them all.  So look out for them!!  You're  doing great - have enjoyed downloading all your hard work.   Thanks   :D  :)

hello lappy.

Thanx 4  such warm welcom in a new community.

i came accros your site wen i was searching material for my son.

i have a problem dealing with my son.he is 17months old,he is pampered so much by every1 at home xcept me so he dont prefer 2 cum 2 me.
m not xcesive strict with him but i belive that this is a foundation age of our kids.and they need to learn certain behavioural pattern and much more.
wen it at home the family members dont realise the outcome but in public i feel the problem.

wen ever i show him flash cards he is not sitting and watching them.

he dont even watch slide show that i have downloaded.

i m really worried abt how to tackle him.

i was so glad i found this site. it has such wonderful materials available for teaching babies and kids. i sure hope i can make use of them on my baby of 8 mths.

i think i have the same problem as Rups above. and on top of that, he gets easily distracted and most of time he doesnt finish the flash cards i showed him.

any tips on how to handle this are welcome!

cheers!

Hi everyone!

This is going to be great to get to know everyone and make new
friends.  8)

I just wanted to tell everyone a little bit about myself.  I am the 1st of 6 children.  I am 23 yrs. old.  I have been married for 5 1/2 years.  I am a mother of 3.  I have 1 boy he is 4 yrs. old, and I have 2 girls 1 is 2 yrs. old, and the other is 2 months old.  I also run 2 businesses as well as help my parents with the rest of their kids.

Needless to say my life is totally crazy!

I went and got my son registered to start pre-school this year and then we had to move.  The pre-school was free if I lived in that area and since we had to move he got kicked out!  I have looked in my area that we are in now witch by the way is only like 4 blocks from where we were before.  Anyways, the school that is around this area says that we have to pay $175 a month for him to go to school.  And its only for 2 hours a day and 2 times a week.  Now does that sound crazy or what?

Anyways I decided that I am going to homeschool my kids and I need help to find out how I go about doing that.  Any help would be great but you should know my husband just lost his job and we are having a real hard time trying to find anything around here.  To me my kids come first and since I dont have any money what-so-ever it would be great if someone knew how I could get the stuff for FREE!  I know it sounds like its alot to ask but I really need the help.

Thanks!

momof3under4

hey, dont worry about that home schooling should be great for you and your children you'll develope a better relation and youll be a really joined family, ok so try these steps:

  • Fisrt you have to make a list of activities that involve artistic, educational and entretaining activities also some sport
    Then you have priorize them.
Make a shedule for your children and please try to do it order is very importat to make thids work.
You can use your own home supplies to educate your children just use your imagination
Take care of the contents that you can give them, they have to be related to their age. If you have the little reader  it could be one of the activities to located in the schedule, why don't you make a list of the activities that your children enjoy doing and send it to me? I can help you to put them in oder let's try

Hello,

Thanks for the introduction.  I wasn't that great of a reader by the time I entered college.  I hope that I can teach my own child rather than sloughing it off onto another teacher.  It would be a privilege to have my child read before the age of 2!

Right now my child is 18 months.  He is currently able to pick up names of sports teams off of people's shirts....its a start, but I am hoping he can read some actual words real soon .

Title: Re: Hello Everyone!

I am the same way.  It's great if he is starting to read sports teams at 18 months.  My son did start untill 23 months and only has a few words he knows (juice, cow, elephant) but it sure is wonderful if of son's have this little advantage alone.

Ahlan wa sahlan (welcome) to the forums of BrillBaby & BrillKids.   Have you seen the information on the following sites:

http://www.brillbaby.com/

It will help you understand the forum topics/discussion a little more.

I am using the Doman method to teach my twin girls (20 months) how to read in English and Arabic, insha'Allah.

Hmmm, do we have a homeschooling forum here? It would be nice to have a place to share resources that we've found online, etc. I know there are other forums out there, but I certainly don't have the time for more than one.

welcome all!

Yes, indeed. we are a bunch of parents who all believe in early education. A quote that keeps us inspired:

Learning is a reward, not a punishment.
Learning is a pleasure, not a chore.
Learning is a privilege, not denial.

Let our children know that they are the most fortunate ones in the world whereby their dads and mums spend time with them and giving them this gift of learning!

Cheers!

Hello,

My name is Chanda and my daughter Ashlyn is 8 months old.  I've been trying to find all the information I can about early development and learning.

Even while I was in school I never felt that the teaching offered at public schools was indepth enough or personalized.  When my younger sisters were in school (9 years younger than me) My mom considered Homeschooling them, and ever since I've been interested in different learning options.
Now that I have Ashlyn I want to make sure that I do everything in my power to help her with learning and growing.
I'm glad that I stumbled upon this site today and I hope to learn lots while I'm here.

 :)

I don't know whether to address this to KL, Lappy or all who have done work on this site, but I wanted to say that in navigating through the site, it has improved greatly since I first signed up last year.

The general layout has improved, and the download section is easier to navigate. I like the preview option, which is a great time saver especially when looking for new downloads to import into LR (another thanks, by the way, for those who put that together; my 3 year old niece and 1 year old son are learning to read from it and we're all enjoying the process!)

Hello Everyone,
I'm Claire and I have and 18 month old son named Maximus. He speaks about 70+ words, does about 10 signs, but prefers to say "this", "that" or "no" most of the time. He always steals books away from me when I try to read to him. I hope this will be something that will help him use his vocabulary.
I'm willing to take suggestions.
Thank you for your time,
Claire

I'm very interesting in teaching my boy how to read and I am using the Doman method but it's very difficult I need more time in my day.

I hope to get more ideas from here.

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I have been a member for a couple of years but have only recently started posting!  I have so much appreciated everyone's comments and contributions over the years.  I look forward to contributing as well.  I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old, and have been doing both GD and LR/LM with them since they were a few months old.  We can hardly wait for Little Musician to be released!

Thanks,

Bethany

I'm very excited about becoming a grandmother in three weeks or less.  I've been updating myself on all the infant educational programs out there.  After much research, my daughter and son in law have decided (and I agree wholeheartedly) not to introduce t.v. or video in the first three years of life--and maybe longer.  So I am interested in old fashioned methods like flash cards three dimensional teaching tools etc.  Any suggestions?

Congratulations!! What a fun, and demanding, journey you have ahead of you.  I'm a first time grandmother of about five days today.  What a joy a brand new life is!   Mostly, have tons of fun with your baby and he/she will grow up at peak development.  "Bright from the Start"  by Dr. Jill Stamm who heads New Directions infant brain development institute at Arizona State University,  is a fascinating book that reconfirms the value of what most parents would naturally do anyway in interacting with their child, as key in infant brain development.  She stresses the value of a loving primary (permanent) caretaker, along with lots of verbal interactions mixed with down time for the baby.  Good luck!

Hi everyone.  I'm Shen-Li.  I have two boys - 3 year 3 month old and a 4.5month old.  They both doing various right brain programs, learning to read, do math, and developing their encyclopedic knowledge.  We still have a lot to learn about right brain development.

I like this phrase that I recently came across:

“In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.” - Eric Hoffer

I'd also like to echo jennytx's comment about "Bright from the Start"...  It is an excellent book and you can read parts of it from Google books at: http://books.google.com.my/books?id=jDLzs0LqlawC&printsec=frontcover&dq=bright+from+the+start&source=bl&ots=xg_mtLq-3z&sig=k_dKePvjMuTqtLy8cw3ezkAbgog&hl=en&ei=zcTNS5HeJcm-rAepzax5&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CBwQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q&f=false

Hello Lappy and Everyone! I am very excited about being a part of this community! I am a new mom and I believe in early childhood education. I was looking for support groups of parents who shared the same views. It is hard to find daycare that values not only the motor and developmental skills but also teaches and educates children at a very young age. I hope to learn a lot!

Thanks again.

I am Dhruvita Candy.

I am an Educator by profession. I have 2 kids. Kyle who is 18 months old and Kayne who is 1.5months old.

The Brillkids software seems to be impressive but I am still not sure whether I should buy it or not. I feel kids have to learn through out their life so why to begin so early. But I must say I would like my kids also to learn and understand faster, so I am totally confused....

Please help out...especially other parents who have used the software before.

I am wondering also whether or not to take the free trial. Are 14 days enough to invest in the whole curriculum??

Rgds,
Dhruvita

Hi rabbitoto,

Welcome to BrillKids!!
That is so great that your son is already being interactive with the program.
I am sure that your younger son will catch on quickly by watching his older brother.
It is a good sign that he was quiet and looking at the program.  He must have been very interested.
Have fun teaching your little ones and make sure you check out the extra files you can download from this site and input into your BrillKid programs.

Hi Mela,

Thanks for warm message. There are many stuff in this site. I need to take time to digest them.
I am very happy about the software and enjoy them with my sons. Cannot wait to receive LR Dulex.

My big enjoy watch LR but do not like LM. He said no time to count it as he can slowly count up to 29 now.
So he told me that he do not like watch it and want to see more LR again. I will try to put his face as new icon. Hope he will like it.
My little just watches both LR and LM very quiet. I felt somehow he is digest in his mind at this stage.

Thanks for infor about extra file to download.

Hi all,

I've a 20mth old boy. And I only bought the delux set at the recent baby fair held at singapore expo 2 weeks ago. I supposed I'm a late starter on this..

Hope someone will guide me through about using this programme. I do not want my money go to waste. Previously I had bought a set of English flashcards for my boy but he doesn't seem to be interested in. Chanced upon this programme then thought it LR will be a good investment. I would say that my boy can convey his thinking pretty well and can understand what we communicated to him. So need to expose him to words and pictures now. To form a linkage of the words that he has been using to the words that he will see and the pictures shown to him.

Would appreciate if someone can just guide me through about this programme. Thank you in advance.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Alex and I have a 20 month old little boy. We have been doing some early education in a rather haphazard way, and I hoping to get more of a routine going now that he's finally settled into more of a regular sleep routine.

My focus is primarily on languages, since that is my passion. We have LR and have used Doman math cards, but I haven't managed proper consistancy with them. I hope to get back into them after breaking for six months - so long as he enjoys them! We are a 2-language family, speaking English and Russian, but also learn Chinese and Japanese through the Wink to Learn dvds, as well as Little Pim. The Wink dvds are the only thing we have been consistant with the last few months, since he demands them at least once a day.

Hopefully this forum will supply much-needed inspiration and support!

Alex

Hello,
My name is Jenny. I am so glad i have a chance to join this forum. I expect to have a really good time here with other moms and mom-to-be. I am pregnant and will deliver in March, next year. I've read through many topics in this forum as well as articles in the website and feel so excited that i could not wait to plan lessons for my baby.

The problem i have is my husband and i both are not English native speakers. we would like to talk to our baby in his/her early years in our native language which is Vietnamese. So i am thinking of introducing her flashcards in Vietnamese first and then English ones later. is it the right choice? Do you think i should use vietnamese to talk to my baby even while i am showing her/him English flashcards, slideshow...? when i show him a picture of car with the word "car", should i show a picture of car with the equivalent word in Vietnamese (ô tô)?

It seems like it's not so easy but i think this forum will be a big help.
thank you
really happy to chat with you all.

Welcome to all of our newest members!

Siew Wan, he may be reluctant to show his knowledge. Have you tried the free two week trial of Little Reader yet? If you wanted to expose him to more words, that's a great option for home versus his class. Do you work with him at home or does he do early learning only at the Right Brain School? If it's just at school, try working with him more at home and he may respond better to learning with you as his mother.

Browse the boards for some more ideas. Figure out if he responds best to software, physical flashcards, flashcard games, personalized books, DVD's, etc. These forums are a wealth of information. And remember there is no rush or pressure, follow his lead! Best of luck. :)

I am going to be watching her several days a week and was looking for educational programs fo her. I just download the trail and can't wait to try it.

Hi, I'm a soon to be mum, I'm living in Western Australia. I became interested in early learning after seeing YBCR  advertised on day time television. I was frustrated by the school system due to my own experiences and made up my mind to one day homeschool my own kids for at least a couple of years.  I really didn't start researching early learning until after I became pregnant. I'm looking forward to become what Domain calls a professional mum since I discovered my own love of learning when I was in University and can't wait to see my own children discover learning for themselves.

Cheers,

Lappy

Hi Maria,

It is nice to have you here!

I know other mommies of children with Down  Syndrome found that Little Reader program suits well for them. It will definitely help with vocabulary expansion and development, multi sensory lessons are very visual and engaging ( and never the same!)

You can try it out for free here -- http://www.brillkids.com/free-trial.php and see for yourself!

And of course feel free to ask any questions!

Welcome to the Forums!

Maria, also here is the board, where some of the mommies who have special needs children share some additional ideas for early learning! Have you seen it?

http://forum.brillkids.com/parents-with-special-needs-children/

What programs have you used so far? I know my kids enjoyed Baby Signing time a lot, they did not start signing right away, but after a few months of watching a little bit of it, all of a sudden their signing expolded   and it was fun watching them -- plus I think it helped them with development of fine motor skills and correspondence.

We also print out flash cards straight from Little Reader and play matching/finding games with them. Well really the sky is the limit!

Hello, everyone!

I have been reading the information on this wonderful site for about a month now. We just started the free trials for reading, math and music today. My 7 month old daughter was really excited with the reading portion. I think we'll stick with one subject at a time for now. And hopefully we'll have the money to buy the full version very soon.

I am just so grateful to everyone that has worked on this website and these products. Since my husband and myself both work, it is really great to have an option such as this to begin early education with our little one.

Hi everyone! WE are weeks ahead to became new parents of a girl. We are originally form Argentina but currently live in Puerto Rico. I'm 35 weeks prengant and already at hospital since week 32...It's been a loooong journey but hopefully a great one!
I'm a kindergarten teacher and have a couple of years of experience teaching babies as weel. I came across this web looking for ways to stimulate my unborn baby and help her develop as much as possible, specially if she's going to be a preemie.

wonderfull site so far, full of ideas. Love it!
Looking forward to learn more and more to help achive my baby her best potential.

Pazylu,

Congratulations for your upcoming baby!  May god bless you, your family, and your new baby.
I personally would start with stimulation cards.  If you do a search on this forum, you should find
a free download.  These are designed to help your newborn's eyes focus.  Read the forums to find out more.  There is a great deal of early learning (EL) that you can do with your child.  Being that you are a school teacher, you should have a head start with what ideas you can do with children.  Ask around if you have questions.  Welcome to the forum.

John

hello,
I'm new here. I've know Doman theories for a too brief a time. I mean, I am a mother of three (4, 2 and 0,5 y) and though I'm very happy they are below 6 years I wish I could have done with them so much more. Well, at least the youngest will profit most :)
I am from Poland, but I studied English philology and intend to teach that language to my children. And so I hope to find many helpful people and share my experiences as well as see or read about - yours.
I have some questions so I'll go and browse the forum to see where to post them.

Hi Lappy,
I am new here.  I have heard a lot about Brill kids from the Down Syndrome board at Baby Center and decided to come check it out!  I am excited to start teaching my 19 month old son.  I was wondering something and hoping you can help!  Today I was doing some research on Andi Durkin's blog "Down Syndrome:  A Day to Day guide" and there was a mention about Brill kids with a link to another blog, "Down Syndrome - Up, Up and Away", that talks about a special needs discount ranging from 30 - 100% off, here is what it says:

I am very excited to announce that he, KL, has generously offered to give discounts ranging from 30% all the way up to 100% off!  The discount is available to Brillkids forum members who have been posting on the forum for at least a month and have a child with a disability.
Unlike the regular sponsorship program, the special needs discount is not based on parental income.

Do you know if this is still going on and how it works?  I would be very interested!!!
Thanks for your help!
Wendy

Welcome everyone!
Darlyn-
Honestly, I think that only a small percentage of Brillkids members began with Your Baby Can Read... And although I did ( the success and progress is what led me to BK!), I honestly find it a far superior program...
If money is no object, definitely go for both! It is VERY nice to have options as to media.

But, if I had to choose just one? BrillKids hands down! It is SO much more inclusive, hands-on, and quick!

If you have not downloaded the trial,  start there. Even you older kids can benefit! In the free download sections you will find lots of general knowledge materials that moms and dads have made for their children! Also, this program has the diversity to make specialized programs for YOUR children's interests!
For example: I made a LR file to teach my 2.5 year old the multiplication tables using the right-brain-based Multiplication.com materials! It works beautifully...

Welcome everybody!

Hello Darlying! Your children will learn to read with the programme. I have seen many post where you will find a lot of testimonials. It is better to begin early, but there are many parents who teach their older children too. I don´t know much about this matter, but there is a post about old children. I suppose your 13 month will have a better learning. I hope the parents can help you as much as possible.Welcome again!

Title: 1st intro for 2014!
Post by: QueenHera on January 06, 2014, 04:45:32 AM
Hulllloooooo alllllllll!
Happy New Year!

i think i am the first intro for 2014...since the last post was on 27th Dec 2013...

Anyhow.. here i am... had read quite a bit here and there..just thought i intro myself today coz well.. just coz i read that Lappy the Mod Mum of this Forum Intro Page, didnt have a child when she started it all. so yup, i feel less intimidated and inspired and counting that her enthusiasm will rub on me too..

Brief Intro of me!

Im going for IVF-ICSI in this coming March.. (National University Hospital, Singapore - Prof Wong)

trying to take my mind off the procedures and processes and whatever to do with the nerve-wrecking, heart-exploding issue.

Although i am not very sure if this is the correct "escapism" but it is surely more exciting.  8)

And so, I have decided to start to join communities on early readers etc etc..and started a blog (just. very new. very virgin.) , to share what i have read and with a purpose in getting insights from others about  developing our children's potentials, happy learning environment, stimulating them.. guiding.. i dunno.. just give the best we can to them...

here's my humble blog:  ardorsforanewbeginning.blogspot.com

Anyhow.. lets get acquainted!  :D

Hi there! Accidentally found this site and can't wait to start reading and having fun with my 4.5 month old baby.
I read somewhere that they also have tagalog BK version, just curious as to how to access it and when do you start teaching them another language? Thank you very much!

Hello Lappy,

I am new to this forum and Little Reader (Brillkids), my daughter is 2.5 years now, and I'm wondering where should we start? same as infants? I think we are a bit behind already.

My daughter watched "your baby can read" DVDs, and can identify most pictures, animals, but we haven't really use flash cards, or numbers to train her reading skills!! I'm a bit regret that I have not seen this website earlier, and now we have missed 1.5 years of window time to train her.

My daughter is bought up with dual languages, grandma (who spend everyday and night with her speaks Mandarin, and her father and I speak English to her mainly). She can talk in two languages, but still not able to say complete sentence yet, (or more than 4 words in one sentence is challenging for her).

Many thanks!

Regards, Ella

Hi Lappy and everybody,

Thanks for the welcome note. I am a first time mom and have a 1 year old. I am new to this forum and brillkids and totally overwhelmed with so much information. Heard a lot of good things about your program in babycenter down syndrome group. My son is not at all into books, I hope this program helps him start learning to read. I would very happy if you or anybody out here have any suggestion to help me get started and make my LO love reading.

Cheers!!
Moumita

Hi Lappy!

Firstly, I'm very glad to join the community of BK forum. The reason I am here is as others, expecting to provide early childhood development of my daughter and also know about the important of high quality stimulation during a child's very early years. I have just download the trial software, and will let my kid discover with this one and if it works I wouldn't wait until she gets old to learn what she is able to earn during her very early years.

P/S: My little daughter is now 19 months old.

Cheers.

Hello, I Have few queries.

1) Is flash card method useful while the baby in the womb, i.e. during pregnancy? If yes, then how can we show flash cards to baby in the womb?

2) How frequently one card should be shown to baby in a day?

3) Can we show multiple category multiple cards to baby from day 1?

Thanks in advance

Hi All,

I'm Chrissi. Based in the U.K I have a one year old little boy. We are currently doing the YBCL program after which we will be doing LR. I accidently, stumbled on EL after my child started reciting his ABC while watching a few videos on youtube. Since then we've been on the EL path. I hope to learn from the experts on this site and learn more about the possiblities of EL.

hello everyone !
My name is Maria & I have a little two month old boy. I have been reading to this little one since the day he was born. I have been taking him to the library every week & we check out about 20 books each time we go. Our limit at our library is 99 books at time but sadly this 120 lb mommy cant carry a 13 lb baby & more than 20 books at a time. Anyway I am really excited about learning how to help my baby boy become an early intellect. I want to give him every opportunity possible to get ahead so I am really happy I found this site. Looking forward to see when and what I can teach my baby really soon!

Hello,
My name is Tom, I am a grandfather trying to brush up on the early learning for kids.  My new granddaughter is 2mo old.  This not my first experience with this how ever.  I have 2 older children who we went through the Doman early learning programs at home.  It was very successful  We didn't have the online support like this how ever and did it the old fashion way of cutting and pasting the cards and building our own crawling tracks and brachiating ladders.  I look forward participating.

Hello Lappy and all mums here,
I am a mother of 1 20-month-old girl. I have almost completed all Doman's math and reading programmes with her. Right now I am testing Little Reader and Little Math by Brillkids. As my baby demonstrated a real interest in maths around her I think I will buy the Little Math first as I can't afford two programmes at the same time. I share my experience and our results on my blog: http://teachyourbaby.pl/index.php/en/ You are welcome to follow and share.
