Title: Welcome to the BrillKids Forum!
Post by: Lappy on June 26, 2008, 02:03:10 AM
Welcome to the Brillkids forums!

You have just joined a community of thousands of parents, caregivers and educators who are devoted to teaching their children and giving them the best start possible in life.

Best of all, you are now a member of a place where you can meet others to ask questions and share your thoughts, ideas and progress.

Like many others, you may have found that teaching babies and young children is something that not everyone agrees with. Some people may criticize you or make you question what you’re doing. We promise that you will never feel that way here. Many of us have faced the same problems and opposition, and we are all here for one another. That is what makes our community so special, and we think you’ll agree.

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)But there’s so much information! Where do I start?

Like many new parents who are just finding out about early learning, you may feel overwhelmed and you may not know where to start. We have created a Teaching Babies Survival Kit (http://www.brillbaby.com/teach-baby/survival-kit.php) which will give you an overview of the different learning methods, techniques, frequently asked questions (FAQs) and concerns.

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Rules, Guidelines and Your Profile

Are you ready to start reading and posting on the forum? We hope you'll start by reading our general forum rules (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-rules-plus-regulations/general-forum-rules/) and basic community guidelines (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-rules-plus-regulations/basic-community-guidelines-t5906/).

There are many things you can do to customize your foruming experience, and one of the first things you might want to do is to edit your profile, including your personal information and changing your baby’s age. Go here (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-update-your-forum-profile/msg4839/#msg4839) to find out how.

You can also learn how to change your avatar (the picture for your profile) here (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-change-your-forum-avatar/), so you can make your forum identity as unique as your own personality.

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Join us in the discussions!

Do you have something to say? We would love to hear it! Learn how to create a new topic or thread (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-create-a-new-topic-thread-post/), or you can learn how to reply to a post (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-reply-to-a-post/) so you can get your voice heard.

You can also learn how to start a discussion about a video or file (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-start-a-new-discussion-for-a-video-or-file-download/) you've watched or downloaded so you can give feedback to the contributor or spark a great topic of conversation.

And if you need to ask another member something personally, we have a private messaging system within the forums. Learn how to send a PM (private message) here (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/how-to-send-a-private-message/).

 To start with, why don’t you go ahead and introduce yourself (http://forum.brillkids.com/introduce-yourself/) and join the discussions on your country's board (http://forum.brillkids.com/foreign-country-boards-disscussions/)?

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Change how you get notified

Want to know each time someone replies to a post you've made? Or perhaps you'd like to lessen the amount of emails you get and subscribe to a weekly summary instead?  It’s simple to edit your Forum Mail Preferences (http://forum.brillkids.com/announcements/check-out-the-new-my-forum-mail-feature-from-brillkids!/) to change the way you get notified of forum activity.

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Loyalty Points and Karma

You can earn Loyalty Points (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/what-are-brillkids-loyalty-points-for/)  just by staying active on the forums! Our Loyalty Points System is a way for us to reward active members, and there are a lot of valuable products and discounts which you can redeem with them!

To easily check how many points you have so far, all you have to do is sign-in to your forum account, and your points will be displayed under your forum profile on the upper left hand corner of the forum home page.

Your points can be redeemed for discounts from our Product Partners (http://forum.brillkids.com/shop/?do=buy); you may also use them to download premium content. If you'd like to learn a bit more about points, here's some more information about the Loyalty Points Program (http://www.brillkids.com/partner-products/loyalty-points-program.php).

Have you seen other members with karma under their user name? Our forums are governed by something called “Karma (http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-how-tos-and-faqs/karma-and-positions/).”  When you write posts or open threads that other people think are important, you get karma points which translate into loyalty points!

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Video Gallery

Did you know that you can share and view videos pertaining to early learning? Check out our Video Gallery (http://forum.brillkids.com/mgallery/), which is full of great videos covering many topics. You can also access the Video Gallery through the link on the navigation bar near the top of the page (click on the Video Gallery button). You can even earn loyalty points for adding videos!

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)What do LR, and LM and YBCR mean?

You may have come across a post that referred to LR or LM. Those stand for our exclusive BrillKids learning systems, Little Reader (http://www.brillkids.com/teach-reading/index.php) and Little Math (http://www.brillkids.com/teach-math/index.php).

Our learning systems use the right brain (http://www.brillbaby.com/teach-baby/right-brain-genius.php) and multisensory (http://www.brillbaby.com/teach-baby/reading-multisensory-method.php) methods of teaching. LR and LM make learning fun and interesting, and best of all, the curriculum is pre-made. All you have to do is press play. You can even sign up for a free 14-day trial of both learning systems to see what all the parents on the forum are raving about!

YBCR stands for Your Baby Can Read (http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/robert-titzer/method.php), a multisensory reading system developed by Dr. Robert Titzer (http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/robert-titzer.php).

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)What are the Doman and Shichida methods?

Glenn Doman (http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/glenn-doman.php) is the founder of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. He pioneered the flash card method (http://www.brillbaby.com/teach-baby/reading-flash-cards/method.php) as a part of an entire program geared toward helping babies, children and brain injured children reach their full potentials.

Makoto Shichida (http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/makoto-shichida.php) was another pioneer in early learning. He opened many centers in Japan and Asia. His method (http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/makoto-shichida/method.php) helps to nurture a child’s inborn genius and special abilities.

We have a library full of thousands of downloads made by Brillkids and our forum members. The libraries can be accessed through the blue bar near the top of the page. Our Free Download section (http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?overview=2) includes PowerPoint slide shows, printed flash cards, infant stimulation cards and more!

We also have an extensive library of Little Reader downloads (http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?overview=1) and Little Math downloads (http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?overview=3). You must have Little Reader and/or Little Math to use these downloads. Some downloads are premium, meaning they are high quality and require points to download.

(http://www.brillkids.com/images/main-images/icon43.png)Do you still have questions?

Many of them may have been answered already on the forums. You can simply search the forum by utilizing the search feature near the top right of the page. We also have an extensive help section (http://www.brillkids.com/support/index.php#/membership-registration) that should answer many frequently asked questions. If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, just ask! Our helpful members, moderators and administrators will be happy to help. Just start a new topic and someone will answer soon.

We are very happy that you have joined our community. It brings us great pride to know that we are able to reach so many wonderful people from all over the world who all share a common goal of helping their children reach their full potential. We hope you will share your experiences with us and let us know if you have any questions.

Hi Lappy!

Will try to read everything and digest what you sent me.... but will be a bit slow.....this weeks as the birthday of my daughter is fast approaching... and I haven't found a cake that will make her happy... initially she like a strawberry cake... we don't have this at Goldilocks or Red Ribbon.... so have to probably settle for the whole strawberry jam and maybe order a chiffon or settle for minicupcakes for practical and minus the mess... well still planning and keeping the budget in check.

Just me,

Girl2025

Hello everyone, wanted to get some opinions on how to start my 10 mth boy on some early education.

Am thinking of starting either Little Reader or the Glenn Doman program in my neighbourhood. Or should i do both?
It seems quite similar to me except for the medium and would appreciate any advice. thanks!!

Yes, you can begin LM & LR at the same time. Some parents play LM first and then LR second, others break them up in separate sessions throughout the day. Follow your baby's lead & you'll soon figure out what works best for your family!

Hi Lappy, my son (9months) starts the LR few days ago.  He pays full attention to watch the screen.  We can see he is very happy and has motion with the picture in computer.  Is this already enough for his right brain training or I need to let him watch baby program in TV or DVD or other materials?  Looking forward to hearing from you soon.  Thank you so much.

Title: Question on how to particpate in the Forum.
Post by: JMAP on September 23, 2011, 08:11:59 AM
Hi Lappy,

This may strike as a stupid question, but then again, maybe not.  I am using a MAC and for days I have been looking through the forum and would like to post something.  However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to post something.  Even in the Parent's Lounge to introduce myself.  Where do I write the text to intro myself?!?!?

Is there a link to "how to use" forum somewhere, if so, please send me the link.

Thanks!

JMAP

Hi everyone, and welcome the BrillKids Forum!

Here are the answers to your questions (do let me know if I missed anything):

@Kanguru: Unfortunately the Little Reader iPad app is not available yet - however, I'd like to let you know that we are getting nearer to releasing it, so do watch out for an update!

In the meantime, if you have a computer you can borrow, you may go ahead and do a free trial. For instructions, please refer to this article: http://support.brillkids.com/entries/20390567-how-to-get-a-free-trial-for-little-reader

@JMAP: Yes, we do have a "how to" article specifically about posting at the forum:
http://support.brillkids.com/entries/20387613-how-do-i-create-a-new-topic-or-thread

In case you need help with other things, please visit our Help Desk where you can browse through our support knowledgebase: http://support.brillkids.com

I hope these help!

Title: how to help my child to learn time?
Post by: DaphneB on September 28, 2011, 10:31:59 AM
Hi parents!

I discovered Brillkids today, as I was looking for insights and advice about methods for teaching my 3 year old daughter how to read time, how to understand the notion of 'time left ( before going to bed, ;-). I ran across a time-teaching watch apparently using pictograms instead of digits or hands.   Anybody knows of this method?   Cheers. Daphne.     Here is their website : www.watch-kids.com

Hi Daphne,

I would not recommend teaching a child something that needs to be unlearned. Teaching a child to tell time using pictograms rather than numbers is just slowing down when they will learn to tell real time and cluttering their mind with useless knowledge.

Telling time is quite easy, and given enough exposure to a standard analog clock, many kids will pick it up. At three there is no reason not to buy your daughter a simple watch (white face, black minute and hour hands and preferably no second hand) and to show her what time it is. All four of my kids can tell time on a standard clock to the quarter hour, which is accurate enough for preschool aged kids.

Start with on the hour. Point out to your daughter on her watch or a wall clock every hour. "It's 9 o'clock. We know that because the hour hand is pointing to the 9, and the minute hand is pointing to the twelve." etc. Depending on how consistent you are and how quickly she grasps things, she could pick it up in a week.

Then move to the half hour. Tell her what time it is on the half hours. "It's nine thirty. We know that because the hour hand just left the 9 and the minute hand is pointing to the 6." You don't need to keep telling her the time on the hour unless you want to. You can also start asking her what hour she thinks it is.

Continue until you're happy with how accurate she is. Knowing that 2:10 is nearly quarter after 2 is good enough for me, but I have friends that taught their children (under 4) to the minute.

Hope this helps you decide!

It sounds like a great toy but I wouldn't teach them to learn to tell time that way.
The best way I've found with my girls is to first to teach them to count by 5's.
You can make up little games, sings songs, find some skip counting CD's ( if creativity isn't something that comes naturally to you), Once they understand how to count by 5's. Then, and only then will they understand how to learn to tell time.
I would get a Judy clock and teach time that way. Practice everyday by moving the hands and counting by 5's.

Hi MarthaT,

So glad to have you here with us on the forum!  You will find sooooo much information about early learning here.  I especially love the product reviews!   I remember when I first joined I stayed up a few nights to read through previous posts!  I still have the notes I took.
We look forward to hearing about your journey with early learning.

Post by: katia26 on February 09, 2014, 09:51:49 PM
Hello,

I am new to this fórum, i would like to ask if Little reader is also available in different languages, like slovak, since I am slovak I would like to teach my baby to read in slovak, do i have to translate everything? or how does it work for foreign mothers who want to teach to read their babies in their language???

thank you very much for your answer.
best regards..
katia

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

At the moment Little Reader is available in English ( both US and UK), Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional), French and Thai. Shortly it will be available in Arabic, Spanish and Russian.

Unfortunately it is not available in Slovak.

Some parents used it for introducing foreign language to their child, as well as an incredible tool for creating your own language reading lessons, since the program is easy in use and fully customizable.

I am sorry, that it is not available in Slovak! Of course if you want, you can translate and adapt the lessons to your language, it is very doable, as the program is set up to enable parents to do just that. But you do need to be aware, that it will take your time to do that.

Hi Goldengirl8!

Welcome to the BrillKids Forum! :)

We've had a few BrillKids parents on here who have used our programs with children with special needs, and for some, it has proven effective due to the methods of teaching which the system use: flash and multisensory.

I can go on and on about the program and how it can help, but I think the best way is to really try it out for yourself and see if your child will like sitting through and interacting through the lessons. With your BrillKids registration and membership, you have access to download the program for free:
http://www.brillkids.com/user/acct-mgmt-purchases.php/Little-Reader-Software.php

Just download and install the program and try to use it for your little one.

If you would like to know more about the methods of teaching used by the program, please feel free to download our free eBook here:
http://www.brillkids.com/media/ebooks/ebook-teaching-with-little-reader.pdf

I hope this helps in some way! And I hope you have a lovely time teaching (and learning) with BrillKids! <3
