Title: Little Math and Little Musician - a Sneak Peek!
Post by: KL on May 29, 2008, 04:46:46 AM
As promised, here's a sneak peek at our upcoming software - Little Math and Little Musician.

LITTLE MATH

There are 2 main sections to this - Learning Numbers, and Learning Math.

For Learning Numbers, the program will help you teach your child the concept of numbers.  This will help the child link together the concepts of QUANTITY (eg. showing numbers of dots), NUMERALS (ie., 1, 2, 3, 68, 92, etc) etc.

Like Little Reader, it will be highly customizable, eg., the icons used, and you can import stuff created by others.

For Learning Math, this is basically teaching arithmetic concepts - addition, subtracting, multiplication, and division.  It will be so easy to use. No more spending ages just trying to pre-arrange your math dot cards in order to show equations! :)

We hope to get the first beta out by October.

LITTLE MUSICIAN

Little Musician will teach a child:

Notes & Pitch - ie., the relationship between a note (in terms of pitch), and the representations of the note (eg., the musical staff notation, the letter of the note (eg., G#)).

Rhythm - This aims to enhance the child's sense of rhythm.

Sing Along - This is essentially a baby karaoke, letting them sing along to nursery rhymes.  The best part is, this will also really help a child learn to read too!

And this is Felicity's favorite! You can see her singing Head Shoulders Knees and Toes here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBDsyhX-slE

(If it says "This video no longer exists", just refresh the page and try again.)

We hope to get the first beta of Little Musician out before the end of this year.

------

Hope that gives you some info on what's coming up next!  Stay tuned for more!

If you have any suggestions as to what we can include, please let us know!

wow- Little musician sounds so great!  I am amazed at how attune to music my kiddos have been since day one (actually even in utero I really felt they were both connected to music!) and am so excited for a system that would allow them to start understanding the mechanics of music better - how different tones are visually represented and how different rhythms are notated...how exciting!
Maybe it could also expose them to the terminology associated with the dynamics of music - how music is played... staccato/legato or the intensity or changes in music...crescendo, etc.  I know that my four year old has picked up just a few of these from tv programs and it has been helpful in softening her voice in quiet places!  Rather than telling her "be quiet" during a church service or in the library, I can say "diminuendo" or "pianissimo" and have her change her ways.  :)
Looking forward to it for sure!

Beta on Little Math or Little Musician in September?  Will Little Math be capable of teaching higher order mathematics like algebra and calculus?  I can't wait!!!!

I need it also, but they say it is easier to teach little ones higher order math than is to teach it in highschool.

The September date I mentioned is for Little Math.  We are aiming for September, but should have it out by November latest in any event.

It will just help us teach numbers and arithmetic, not algebra, calculus or quantum mechanics...  Those would be reserved for when we do "Big Math"... ;)

Wow, September!  I can't wait.  Teaching my little one to read has already become so much easier I'm positive the Math and Music will be a big hit too!!  I was already worried about making sure my child was ready for school and he isn't even in pre-school yet, but now I am sure that he will be ready because we will have all these awesome tools that you are creating!!!!

It would actually be very easy to teach at least simple algebra to little babies... such as 5 + y = 7. Fractions (i.e. 1/2 of 10 = 5), square roots, and sequences (2,4,6,8...) are also very easy to teach with the dot cards. I don't know if those types of things were going to be part of Little Math, but it would be neat if they were and not very difficult to make.

Of course, this isn't quite calculus, but a lot of kids from the Institutes are doing geometry and high school algebra at four and five years old, so introduction to these sorts of concepts would sure get them on the right path to doing advanced mathematics long before typically taught.

Well, I was kidding when I mentioned algebra, but I guess we might be able to work something in.  I'll be sure to ask you again for your ideas when we get to Little Math!

I am looking forward to Little Math and Little Musician release as well. You've spoilt us already  We've got used to Little Reader and now it is next to impossible to do without it. It's become the part of our everyday life and I hope that we'll have mathematic and music parts pretty soon.

Also can't wait for Little Maths and Little Musician. Little Reader is being so well used in this home at the moment.

By the way loved the video of Felicity doing Heads and Shoulders - I have been singing that song to my daughter since she was 3 months old and she just loves it so it was so much fun to see Felicity doing it.

Yes, you can show dots with Little Reader, but that is about it. You can't really do equations and other fun stuff with the dots.

Dear All,

This is excellent!  I received the IAHP Math Kit and was happy.  However, because I am math-challenged, I have not read the book yet.     Perhaps I will start with the Math Lecture on DVD first to get my toes wet, and then dive into the book next.

And ya Fatima!  No need to worry about the red stickers.  Please use DomanMom's excellent resources online for Math, until Little Math is released, insha'Allah (God willing):

And another thread about her successful experience with Doman Math that I find very inspirational > http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-math/anyone-get-results-from-doman-math-method/

Oh how I hope that my children will take from my husband his math abilities.

Now I have only LR Lite, but like to buy all of your products which includes Little Reader, Little Math, and Little Musician. The funny thing is I have not  much money and want to buy them also cheap .

So my question: Could you tell what the (planned) incentives are for buying all three products together (if L Musician comes out)? Will I able to buy Little Musician cheaper with certain amount of points? - I am thinking of wether waiting for Little Musician to buy all three together or buying your first two products with 15% discount immediately.

Just wondering, if Little Musician still in works, and if it is, will it be coming our way soon?

I am  curious, because my husband is planning to prepare guitar notes, cords mini course for our little one, because she is really interested in music since birth, and follows my husbands hands with her eyes every time he plays guitar, no matter how long  :)

So we want to introduce these to her pretty soon, since she is so mesmerised by music. But if Little Musician will be coming soon, we will wait with making our own materials. Cant wait to see it being released!

Yes, I'm sure there will be bundle discounts, but nothing finalized yet.

Will be focusing on LMs as soon as we finish launching the new system for LR and LMt!  Hopefully beta by Aug/Sept!

LITTLE MUSICIAN

Little Musician will teach a child:

Sing Along - This is essentially a baby karaoke, letting them sing along to nursery rhymes.  The best part is, this will also really help a child learn to read too!

......!

If you have any suggestions as to what we can include, please let us know!

KL

Thank you for working on it! Great great idea.

Would it be possible to use the songs of our choice in a "baby karaoke" style, like you mentioned about nursery rhymes? For example to have a possibility to import our MP3 file of the song, and then to type in words line by line in a LM editor of sorts, which would make it easy to synchronize them with the music? What about option of having a recorder incorporated so that parents who are musicians themselves can possibly record a song for a child with their own voice and make it in a "baby karaoke" style? Personalization is so important, so it will be great to have this option!

Or a possibility to enter a simple sequence of notes ( melody) and play it back with the note that plays at the moment being highlighted or followed by an arrow.  (Entering can be done either by a mouse on the “virtual keyboard” in the program; or through the assigned keys on the PC keyboard, or trough plugging in the actual keyboard to computer.. I am not sure which would be the easiest to incorporate … just ideas)

Would it be possible to have notes and combination of notes played by various musical instruments? (EG, guitar, violin, piano, chello, trumpet, etc.), this way it will be possible to: introduce child to different musical instruments, teach musical recognition, keep lessons and learning individual notes fun and interesting, since there will be variety of sounds for the same note. Also it will possibly work to have a preset option, where we can chose combinations of notes to play, which musical instruments we would like to use for that, etc. Similar how in Little Math we have presets with the voice reading numbers in different languages, but then we can use those pre-sets in indefinite number of ways – equations, progression of numbers, random, etc. This way there will be lots of possibilities for using it.

It will be nice also to include photos of different musical instruments, possibly with short bits of information about them

Will be great to have a diagram of a piano/guitar with the notes, showing how notes relate to the piano keyboard/guitar… Possibility of printing out those diagrams to post on the walls or use as flashcards possibly can be a useful option

When the notes are introduced, it will be nice to have an option to show the child  where these notes are located on the piano keyboard/guitar ( etc.) and how they sound (possibly picture or animation), how they are played in full notes, half notes and quarter notes.

Basic scales and chords progressions, it will be nice to have an option in pre-sets to highlight the notes that child is learning or learned so far, while showing scale or chord, or chord progression, so  they see it, hear it and see how the notes they just learned or are learning  fit into certain scale….

Another things that go more along with learning to read and recognize music and beginning playing

Symbols for a whole note, half note, quarter note, and an eighth note; introducing a measure and a bar line; the staff and grand staff symbols; the sharp, flat, and natural symbols, how these symbols affect the notes and keys that are played; the Treble or G Clef and the Bass or F Clef, showing which hand to use to play which notes on a keyboard; rests, showing where notes are not played; concept of a beam to tie notes together; key signature, which shows you what keys are played as a sharp or a flat; time signatures, which shows the child how many beats are in a measure, and what note is equal to one beat; etc…

These are just some ideas... What do you think?
