I just finished trying out the sample demo in Traditional Chinese and it is BRILLIANT!!! My dilemma is my daughter's level in chinese is already beyond reading single words and phrases. I am mostly interested in the Chinese stories but I can't really justify spending another hundred bucks just to get the stories.  :sigh:

I had the same questions as Bella. I am so excited about this as I've wanted to teach my daughter Mandarin since she was born. Thank you, Brillkids!

I just downloaded the demo.  I really like the pronuciations.  I can follow along much better than with audio clips I've downloaded from the internet.

Bella - from what I have read/understand, even if you don't continue it - they will have a much easier time learning it later in life if they decide to do so.  They can even have a perfect accent if exposed to the language in the first year or so of life.  I plan is to find/hire someone locally who will speak the language with my son to make the lessons meaningful and motivate him.  Hope this helps!

Simplified.  A friend from college who is from China said to definintely use simplified.  I don't really have any good reason to use traditional.

Does anyone know if simplified is used anywhere in China or if it's just used to teach foreigners or perhaps children?

All people in Mainland China use simplified Chinese. And it's a trend to use simplified Chinese worldwide except Hong Kong. I am a Hongkonger. We use traditional Chinese. But some children in Hong Kong begin to learn simplified one which is not a current script in HK yet. It is not a question of hardness or easiness of whether to learn traditional or simplified, but a question of getting used to which one first. Once you get used to one kind, it's quite hard to learn another one unless you learn it earlier(childhood or younsters). So my suggestion is that which one you will often contact in your daily life or  more chance you will see which script.

Post by: KL on August 28, 2010, 01:47:22 PM
There's also Taiwan which uses traditional.  Singapore is pretty much totally simplified, though you'll see some traditional sometimes.  In Malaysia it used to be more traditional than simplified but I think it's probably now slightly more simplified than traditional.

The trend is to use simplified since Mainland China uses simplified.

If you know traditional, then learning simplified is much easier than if you know simplified and try to learn traditional.

For me, especially being in Hong Kong, we're teaching Felicity traditional but will also teach simplified later.

Apart from the simplified/traditional question, yes, it would certainly benefit a child even if no one speaks the language at home.  I wrote about this here:

Have tried the traditional Chinese curriculum this afternoon and felt disappointed actually - I am happy with the simplied version though. I took it for granted that the traditional Chinese curriculum will have either Cantonese or Taiwainese pronunciation but it's not! It's still exactly the same pronunciation as the people in mainland China use - but traditional Chinese is not used in mainland China! The feeling is very strange (when I hear the mainland style Chinese pronunciation associated with tradition Chinese characters). Can I suggest that Little Reader please take this into consideration and produce Traditional Chinese/Cantonese version please? My husband speaks Cantonese and uses traditional Chinese and I speak mandarine and uses simplied Chinese, we both felt the traditional Chinese/mainland Chinese pronunciation combination is a bit odd.

I would like also suggest that Little Reader could have British English version if that is at all possible.

Many thanks.

Well, we thought we made it clear that this curriculum is based on Mainland China in terms of vocabulary, which would naturally mean Mainland Chinese pronunciations.  We also make it very clear it's Mandarin, and not Cantonese.

Of course, Mainland Chinese pronunciations typically would go with simplified, but we know of many people (especially in Hong Kong, actually) who would like their children to learn MANDARIN, but yet also to recognize TRADITIONAL characters.  This would be for those people.  This is NOT for people who want to learn CANTONESE.

As for Taiwanese pronunciations, we MAY eventually do a Taiwanese Mandarin version in terms of vocab, in which case we would use Taiwanese voice artists to record the pronunciations, similarly to how we have a British version of the English curriculum.

Right now, you CAN get the curriculum in US or British English if you are purchasing today.  We will announce soon regarding how to obtain the UK version if you already have the English version. (but let's keep that conversation separate from this thread).

Back to your original question - sorry if we didn't make it clear enough for you that it is a Mandarin version.  Please remember that you can always request for a refund within 30 days.

KL... at a little over 2 1/2 is Portia too old to learn Traditional /Simplified chinese.  I currently have a brainy Baby spanish and French dvd backing and I am trying to get a lot more spanish based videos for her learning.  But i was waiting for the chinese add on. Before I press the button go, I wanted some leads on which pack I should purchase and if it will not be difficult for her...
Also how can I teach her to write? I still struggle with basic English writing though her reading skills are very good.

I have tried the demo but I wonder why there isn't pronounciation! Why?
My son who is 3 yr-old has undergone the steps of single words, couplets, phrases , simple sentences and books (from another flash cards system) which is a Cantonese version. But I want to teach him Mandarin now! What do you suggest on how or where to start from this program?
And his sister who is 5 wants to use it , is it suitable for her too?
To purchase this program , can we use the points?
Thanks!

Hi Joan,

About the missing pronunciations, can you please check if your speaker is turned on, or if the volume is set to be too soft? You may also check the volume setting in LR (you may find this in the Playback screen's Play Panel, right beside the Play button). You may also try checking as per peter_witono's suggestion, but these particular settings should have been set (in the correct settings) by default.
If you still have problems, kindly try our suggestions for audio and video problems in this post: http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader-bug-reports/pronunciation-audio-getting-cut-off-please-see-here/ (http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader-bug-reports/pronunciation-audio-getting-cut-off-please-see-here/)

As for buying LR Chinese using points, currently you can only purchase from our Online Store with a PayPal or credit card account -- please watch out for further announcements about other payment options (we don't have final details about this as of today).

Hi Fenny,

Can you kindly clarify if you already installed the latest version of Little Reader (v 1.6.342) before you tried importing your LR Chinese Curriculum content? If you haven't done this, kindly download the installer from your BrillKids Account and install the latest version, then try importing your content again.

If this doesn't work, you may want to try uninstalling Little Reader first, and then install the latest version.
To uninstall Little Reader, please follow these steps:
 - From your Start Menu, open your Control Panel
 - Go to "Add and Remove Programs"
 - Select "BrillKids Little Reader" and click on the Remove button
 - Follow the prompts to finish uninstalling Little Reader

** When asked if you want to remove additional data (playlists/presets, playback history, etc.), please DO NOT check/select any of the boxes in this screen. Otherwise all of your Little Reader playlists, lessons, and even the ones you've previously created or downloaded will be deleted permanently.

I hope this helps!  :)
If anyone has any other tech problems about the Chinese Curriculum (Simplified or Traditional), I encourage you to start a topic at our Little Reader Tech Support board at http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader-bug-reports/ (http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader-bug-reports/)

Hi, Kezia,
The volume has been turned on, and all settings are OK! But there isn't still any sound. Though, I have decided to purchase.
My  consultant in HK said it cost $930 . Which is  cheaper, to purchase online or buy from the HK company? Please advise!

Joan, please follow the link that Kezia gave you again and try installing FFDshow.  If that doesn't work, please create a Diagnostic Report:
- from Windows START menu
-> All Programs
-> BrillKids (folder)
-> Little Reader (folder)
-> find "Diagnostic" item.

It will generate a file called "Little_Reader_2010_...zip" in your C:\...\My Documents\BrillKids\Tools folder.  Please attach that to your reply.

As for pricing, it is better you get it from our Hong Kong distributor so you won't have to pay any shipping.

coz some of the free downloads have either really weird accent rather than standard pronounciation as well as wrong chinese character usuage.

can we have 2 weeks trials like Little Reader for it as well?

how much would it be to purchased online?

thank you!

Hi Aizhen,

Did you encounter this error in the Traditional Chinese demo, or in the Simplified Chinese one? Either way, both files are working fine on our end -- could you try re-downloading the file and make sure you've downloaded it completely before you try to open it?

For your reference, the Simplified Chinese demo should be around 35mb, while the Traditional Chinese demo is about 43-44mb.

I also recommend that your try our suggested solution #1 (Update your computer's codec) from this topic:

** if that one doesn't work, please try our other suggestions

Hi
I am downloading now and it is taking a bit of a while (probably because my machine is slow). I am going to take your word for it and go for it KL. I think she will like. I already use the most basic basic words that I learnt (through ni ha kai lan) with her.  I will try to do the repetitions and usages throughout the day  though I might struggle with the script myself.
Thanks.... Indidee

Details on using points for buying discount coupons for items will be announced later (working through some technical hitches, and not sure how long it will take...)

Referral program special promotion will not be extended but we may bring back a promotion at a later date (though unlikely to be soon).

Yes, you should still be able to download the Chinese trial Categories.

Here are the links for both Chinese trial packs again:

Chinese (Simplified) - http://d2.brillkids.com/upload/files/lr-cn-demo/BK-CN-Simplified-Demo.lrp (http://d2.brillkids.com/upload/files/lr-cn-demo/BK-CN-Simplified-Demo.lrp)
Chinese (Traditional) - http://d2.brillkids.com/upload/files/lr-cn-demo/BK-CN-Traditional-Demo.lrp (http://d2.brillkids.com/upload/files/lr-cn-demo/BK-CN-Traditional-Demo.lrp)

We've tested these links and they work fine from our end -- is it possible that your Internet connection was interrupted while you were downloading? If so, this could result in an incomplete file (or even a corrupted file), that will not work.

I suggest that your try downloading again, and hopefully you'll be able to download the file completely

Hi everyone, I have a question: I want to buy the simplified Chinese language pack, but since it is a language which is totally foreign to me, will it work to just let the program flash itself on automatic? When using the English version I use the pointer a lot, but have no idea how this works with Mandarin. I don't even know how you read characters (right to left, left to right, or top to bottom). Any info from native Mandarin speakers on how or whether to use the pointer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Title: Re: Traditional Chinese Curriculum Add-On Pack for Little Reader - Now Available!
Post by: KL on November 09, 2010, 02:03:04 AM
Hi Liv,

It would be better if there was interaction involved, but there is certainly still a lot of benefit even if it's passive viewing.  I'm sure, though, that you will know what many of the characters mean when you see the words, so you should be able to interact with your child.

There is less need for a pointer in Chinese.  Most Chinese writing nowadays (including our curriculum) is read from left to right.  The slides you see will start out by just having one character, so no pointer is appropriate there.  You CAN choose to use the pointer when there are 2 characters or more, but we haven't done that by default in our new v2 Chinese Curriculum (LR v2 beta - just released to a limited number of people - has an auto-pointer function in case you didn't know).

Could you please help me work out how to load the Simplified Chinese Curriculum Trial file.

I downloaded BK-CN-Simplified-Demo.zip from this thread on 22 Nov 2010 and have just today tried to upload it to LR. I still have LR version 1.6.324.

When BK-CN-Simplified-Demo.zip is unzipped I get a folder called BK-CN-Simplified-Demo which contains a folder called Pack which contains a number of folders. There doesn't seem to be a file to select when I try to import into LR and clicking on BK-CN-Simplified-Demo from Windows Explorer does nothing for me.

Could you please help me with the steps I am missing. I feel very silly as so many people have uploaded and enjoyed the trial while I am stumped.

Thank you,

Mum.

Sorry we missed your posts!

For Mum and NadiaD:
Were you using Internet Explorer, by any chance? If you were, then your download problem is likely caused by a security feature in IE (especially IE 6 to 8 ), where the file you are downloading gets renamed automatically to another filename extension like *.zip. To get around this browser bug, you may opt to re-download your Chinese Trial file using another browser, or you can just rename the file to correct the filename extension. After doing this, you should be able to import your Trial files successfully

For detailed instructions on how to do this, please refer to this Support article: http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/content-files-saved-as-zip (http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/content-files-saved-as-zip)
** If you want to just rename your previously downloaded file, note that the correct filename extension of the Chinese Trial files is ".lrp"

Kindly note also that we'll be uploading the LR 2.0 versions of Chinese Trial files within the day (the files at the beginning of this thread will be replaced), so if you're re-downloading now, you have to have LR 2.0 [BETA] installed already.

For Ezhik:
Can you kindly confirm if you've already installed Chinese language support in your computer? It may be that you don't have this yet, and this causes the Chinese characters to appear as boxes.
If you haven't done this yet, you may find instructions in this Support article: http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/how-to-use-little-reader-with-diff-languages (http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/how-to-use-little-reader-with-diff-languages)

Let us know how this works for you.

Hi PrincessJudy,

There is no password or key required to open the Chinese trial files -- from your description it seems that you got a *.zip file when you downloaded the Traditional Chinese trial file. If this is the case, please follow the same workaround that I previously suggested to Mum and NadiaD:

....

** If you want to just rename your previously downloaded file, note that the correct filename extension of the Chinese Trial files is ".lrp"
....

I hope this helps!

Can you try going to the Advanced Play/Edit screen, and then click on "Categories" (this button is in the upper-left side of the Little Reader window). There should be 3 new folders there called "BK Chinese Phonics/Course..." -- if you can see the lessons under these folders, then you were able to import the sample Chinese lessons successfully.

If you can't find these lessons, it may be that you were unable to download the file completely (the Traditional Chinese sample file is around 60mb, while the Simplified Chinese one is around 46mb). If the file you downloaded last time is not anywhere near either of those file sizes, I suggest that you try downloading again, making sure that your Internet connection does not get interrupted during the process. If available, you may also want to try downloading using a different browser.

After completing the download, you may try importing this file again and see if it works fine.

Sorry to hear that, PrincessJudy. I think I may have suggested this earlier, but if you have another browser in your computer (ex: Chrome or Firefox) it may be easier to re-download the Chinese (Traditional) Sample file using a different browser from the one you used last time.
This way you can avoid having to rename the *.zip file you downloaded using your IE browser ;)
But just in case, when you rename the *.zip file, please make sure you rename it as "BK-cn11-trial-v2.lrp" where the 'lrp' starts with a small letter L (not a capital "i").

I'd also like to clarify which version of Little Reader you're using, because we mentioned before that you need to have Little Reader 2.0 to open and use the sample files.

If you want to try downloading again, you can download the Chinese sample lesson files from the first post in this topic:
