In the current LMs beta build, the child learns about various instruments as part of the "Knowledge" lessons.  This is the sequence of slides for these instruments lessons (let's use piano as an example):

1. Display = the word, "piano", Sound = voice saying "piano"
2. Display = picture of a piano, Sound = short clip of a piano being played
3. Display = animation of a piano, Sound = another short clip of a piano being played

In Slide 3, the animation is always the same, regardless of what sound file is being played. Obviously, the movement of the animation is not going to match the sound clip.  While it's less obvious for instruments like the violin, it is more obvious for instruments like drums.

There's been discussion as to whether the mis-match in visuals and sound is doing more harm than good for the child.

One alternative is this - when we show the animation, instead of playing a music clip, we could simply just play the voice pronunciation again. So it would be:

1. Display = the word, "piano", Sound = voice saying "piano"
2. Display = picture of a piano, Sound = short clip of a piano being played
3. Display = animation of a piano, Sound = another voice saying "piano"

We can change this quite easily.

I would like to get votes from everyone, and to hear your opinions on this.

Personally, I have no issue with the mismatch (otherwise I wouldn't have chosen to have done it this way in the first place smile ), and I find more value in having my child hear more clips of the instrument rather than the voice pronunciation.

But that's just my subjective opinion, and not even a very strong opinion.  So please let us know what you think to help us decide whether this is something we should change!

I have liked hearing the music at least for the string instruments.  I am not sure how distracting it might be with the drums but I think I would still prefer the music.

I would prefer a 3rd option where the music played matched the movement. A short clip of someone really playing the instrument would be the best. Hearing the instrument even if the movement doesn't match is still better than just saying the word.

I like the current version. My son loves to see the animations and hear the music being played. This is his most favourite part.
I am not a music person. I don't know whether mismatch would harm a child. I just love to see my son's happy learning and giggling and asking for more of LMs.

Oh, I am on day 4 and this is the first time in my life I could hear the difference between Do Mi Do.. LOL

As I said in a different thread, hands down I would like to see the movement match up with the sounds - and although violin is harder to see that it doesn't match, my just turned four year old noticed it.  That said, I am confident that it would be very costly to find musicians to record or find videos of their performances and therefore, the cost of LMs would also increase.  Seeing as you want it to be more affordable instead of less, I think that the only two options right now are what are proposed in the survey questions.

Considering that, and the fact that my vote reflects the age of my son and his ability to accept that the sound and movement don't match, I would rather hear another example of the instrument's sound rather than hear it's name again.

Thanks for voting, all. Please keep the votes coming.

Also, in case you did not see what I wrote in the main beta thread:

----
See the "DOWNLOADS" button at the top row of buttons, that's currently deactivated? In the final build, it will say, "RESOURCES", and in it, you will find a well-organized directory of links to all the knowledge lessons. One of the sections will be INSTRUMENTS, and under each instrument, you will be able to play back Youtube videos showing those instruments being played.

That's the best we can do for now. Incorporating the videos into the lessons is not feasible for us right now.
----

In other words, you will still be able to show your child REAL VIDEOS (from youtube) of people playing the instrument.  The only thing is that it won't be incorporated into the actual lesson.

We'll STILL be showing the animation video during the lesson, so please remember that the question here is not what we like best in an ideal world, but whether you would prefer mismatched instrument clips, or pronunciation.

Thanks!

I also prefer to hear a piece of music made by that instrument, instead of hearing the word.
Taking into consideration also that other EL materials, like Sparkabilities for instance - which some of us have bought -, offer the sounds according to the animation the child will not suffer in his education if the animations does not match with the sounds in LMs.
As Kizudo said, if we take into account the accessibility of LMs, a "compromise" like that can be made and still has a lot of good results, in my opinion.
My son likes to hear how a instrument sounds like and associate the instrument with its sounds - he does not show that he's concerned with the corespondence between the animation and the music. That's the reason of my vote.

I also like listening to music being played when the 3rd slide is shown. Since it is a music program, I think you should incorporate as much musical pieces into the curriculum as possible. My son listens very intently during the instrument section, especially with the short music clips.

As this is a music programme I would always rather hear more musical pieces wherever possible.  I think the children will surprise us with their ability to make sense of this, even with a mismatch. Many animated programmes are not exact in a variety of ways but kids quickly learn to make sense of what they see. When supplemented with clips from YouTube I doubt this will be a major issue.
