I wanted to share this video for those who have not seen it in light of the discussion over including note-color associations in LMs (here http://forum.brillkids.com/little-musician-general-discussion/using-different-colors-for-different-notes-opinions-please!/) I had learned of the ball game shown below as a means to help train perfect pitch. I tried to play it with my kids after using Little Musician for 6 months and introducing note-color associations with the help of the LMs Free Play Keyboard. It was while trying to play the ball game that  that I discovered that my daughter Lily has perfect pitch. I believe incorporating color was a vital aspect of the ear training. The use of color has also helped Lily teach herself to correctly transpose nursery rhymes unprompted and unassisted on the keyboard (as shown elsewhere on my youtube channel). My son Owen is on his way to perfect pitch as well and is showing great progress under the same program.

Hi Teachingmytoddlers,

That is very impressive indeed. I was wondering where I can get a color coded online keyboard like the one you are using on your laptop for teaching the kids?

Will LM have the same feature?

Thanks,
Regards,

Oh ok....so in the LM that I have downloaded...I saw that we have a free play keyboard but its not color coded (even after downloading the rainbow colors and applying them to all the lessons), can you please help me here?

Thanks a lot

Go to the keyboard screen and select the grey cogwheel on the right hand side of the screen to adjust the settings and select rainbow colors. However, there will be a disparity between so, la, and ti (or maybe just la and ti) versus the notes you just downloaded, so I probably would not use the colored piano feature until the next version comes out with the updated colors. No sense in confusing your child unnecessarily.

TeachingMyToddlers,

Thank you so much for sharing the perfect pitch ball game with us. I can not wait for the Little Musician to be complete smile
Lily and Owen are so adorable and it is amazing how you have given them the gift of perfect pitch.  Are you teaching them with this game alone or are you using other methods such as tuning forks?  I recently purchased the tuning forks but have not yet returned to the states to use them yet.

Thanks in advance.

We did not use tuning forks but I would still like some just for fun! I think they're a great idea.

Thank you KL for your kind words, but it's BrillKids that has done a fantastic job with this software! All of that chord training we did daily and the nursery rhymes in solfege were hugely vital components of successfully training their ears. emphasizing color a bit more was just icing on the cake to bring it all together.  There is truly no other program out there like LMs.

Thanks a lot Teachingmytoddlers...I guess I will wait for the actual LM version to be launched before putting the rainbow colors on the piano....however, is it ok to apply the rainbow colors to the other LM lessons (in the testing version).

I just wanted to update that I've been working with my son especially and between today and yesterday, I think he was able to name about 85%of the single notes . YAY! AND when using the free play option on LMs, my daughter is able to name the notes using ANY instrument, not just piano. My kids are LOVING the new curriculum and I need to get out the video camera again. smile

I heart LMs!!!

Congratulations to both mummy & little boy! What an achievment.  We are just getting started but also loving LMs.

Do you know/ remember what brand the coloured balls were? I can't find any with more than 4 or 5 different colours & I'm not interested in buying 1000 of each colour  wholesale:-) !

Thanks for your time

Hi there,

Yes, I can tell you what I bought and it will *sort of* help you. Are you located in the US? I bought a bag of 100 balls from walmart for $10, like those listed here. http://www.walmart.com/ip/100-Balls-in-a-Mesh-Net-Bag/11084125

HOWEVER
-I trained my kids on the old beta LMs colors which are slightly different. For So-La-Ti the colors were light blue, dark blue, purple. Now, they are dark blue, purple, pink. So this bag I bought has all of the OLD colors in it, AND I had to look through the bags in the store. Not all of the bags had all of the colors so I had to make sure all the colors I needed were represented. Out of a whole bag of 100, we only got 2 orange Re's and 2 light blue So's. This brand is also sold on Amazon, but reviewers complained that only 3 colors are in the bag and the description says it's supposed to include 4 pastel colors. http://www.amazon.com/Moose-Mountain-100-balls-mesh/dp/B0013A4T1W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338359843&sr=8-1 I am including this info for anyone who is looking to stay with the older color set, I saw someone post about this possibility today.

I have seen some bags at Toys R Us locally that have pink and it looks like they have the whole new solfege color scheme represented. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2267575 for 100 balls or http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2991184 for 250. I am still going to try and source a bag of pastel balls for the sharps and flats, though, I was hoping between the two bags (my old bag and this new bag) some of the colors might be lighter and could work for the purpose of sharps and flats. I would STILL try and buy them in person though at the store if possible and make sure that all of the colors are represented! Or just buy the bigger bag and increase your odds, 100 really is not that big of a bag and is not as many as it seems like. My daughter came up with a cool new game with the balls today and lined them up to represent and learn the notes of a new song, so having more balls definitely gives you more flexibility and freedom for musical play! We ran out of mi's and re's too fast to finish the song like she wanted.

Hope that helps!

Instead of trying to get all the balls. I think I am going to make some beanbags to throw and catch. I can write the Solfege on them, or even notes. This should be helpful with sharps and flats. Just a suggestion.
