Lost my files

yikes.  I downloaded the LR newest version and lost all of my own files.  What did I do wrong and can I fix it?

Hi Lori,

Can you tell me which LR version you've downloaded? In LR v2, you can find the version number indicated in the Little Reader window's title bar, or in the "Tools > Software Information" screen.

In the meantime, to retrieve your media files, please open Windows Explorer (or open My Computer) and navigate to this folder:

For Windows Vista or Windows 7
C:\ ProgramData \ BrillKids \ System \ Little Reader \ Backup 1.6

For Windows XP
C:\ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ Brillkids \ System \ Little Reader \Backup 1.6

Find the folder named "Media Library" and copy all of its contents (or you may copy the entire Media Library folder) and paste these into the following folder:

For Windows Vista or Windows 7
C:\ ProgramData \ BrillKids \ Little Reader \ Media Library

For Windows XP
C:\ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ BrillKids \ Little Reader \ Media Library

Please make sure that you have selected to show hidden files/folders in your Windows Explorer window, as some of the folders mentioned in the paths above are hidden ones. To do this:
- Open Windows Explorer (or go to My Computer)
- Go to the "Tools" menu
- Choose "Folder Options" and in the window that opens, go to the "View" tab
- Find and select "Show hidden files and folders"
- Click on Apply, then OK

I found my media files but I lost the playlists and categories.  I can put the ones I remember back together.  Also I had 2 of them backed up already on a thumb drive.  I already recreated our most important wordflash file because I had a paper copy of it.  Are the playlist and categories stored anywhere?  If so I could just plug away at reattaching the media files.  If not, it might be exciting that her old files are scrambled up and put back together differently.

Hi Lori,

We can restore your Little Reader database for you, where we'll roll it back to its original state (before you upgraded to v2) -- this will bring back your personal lessons that went missing after upgrading to v2. However, you may need to reimport all of your Curriculum content (i.e., Semester 1 and 2) after plugging in the repaired database we'll send back to you.

For this, kindly send me your Little Reader database file via PM -- you will find a file called "Little Reader.mdb" inside your "Backup 1.6" folder (the same folder where you retrieved your Media Library last time). If the file is too large for you to attach, you can put it in a *.zip and try attaching it again, or you can just send it to [email protected] (please mention about your post here at the forum so we'll know it's you).

I have a file called "LittleReader.db" but I can't find "LittleReader.mdb"  is it the same thing?

Hello Lappy,
I need some help also. This is very discouraging to me. I am pretty much "computer illiterate".
 I also upgraded to new version of Little Reader. I lost everything. I downloaded the courses I had from my purchases page, but I just can't seem to figure out how to get all my other downloads back. I can barely navigate around my computer.
We have had so much success and enjoyment with Little Reader, but everytime I try to upgrade, I have troubles. When I did the last upgrade, the same thing happened. I didn't know what to do so I painstakingly started to download all the same files all over again. Now I've lost them again.
I guess I am a fool for upgrading to this newest version when I don't know how to do this properly. I tried to backup and save my content last time, but I must not have done it properly.
I am about ready to give up. It takes so much time for me to try to figure this stuff out. I end up frustrated and grouchy. I don't want that to be the association my daughter has with little reader. She is asking for it, and then she sees me all in a muddle and stressed out.
Please help if you can

Kindly confirm if you are still having problems with finding your missing downloads, or if you are getting any error messages like "Media files missing." In case you haven't tried yet, please see the suggestion I posted for Akalori last time:

About your downloaded files, I'd like to recommend that you visit your Account Management page and go to "My Files" > "Little Reader" and there you will find a complete list of the LR files you have downloaded before. This way you can easily re-download all of them when necessary.

Should you continue to have problems, I would like to suggest doing a TeamViewer session with you -- this means that we will use a program to "visit your computer" and remotely do the fixes and troubleshooting for you. In the meantime, please send us a Diagnostic Report so we can check for any other problems that may have happened when you were upgrading your LR.
