How do I "save as" for a category with words that I want to use again?
«
on:
March 27, 2009, 02:03:06 AM »
Dear Everyone,
I am creating my categories as Day 1 Set 1, Day 1 Set 2, Day 1 Set 3, etc. with five words in each set. After the 5th day, I begin to retire a word and introduce a new word based on my schedule template.
How can I "save as" a category and rename it a new Day # Set # and just adjust two words quickly. At the moment I have already created the categories through Day 44 Set 5 and now I am manually adding the words through "Category > Edit > Add Words from the Word Files List".
There has to be a quicker way, yes?
Thanks.
Ayesha

Hi Ayesha Nicole,
Currently, to induce a similar function to "Save As", you may export the Category you want to Save As, and then re-import. When the import dialogue appears, simply choose the "Rename Category" option, and voila - there are now two identical categories under different names!
Hope that helps!

Dear Shuki,
Excellent! I got as far as import and I renamed the set from Day 3 Set 1 to Day 4 Set 1 and selected "rename". It then asks me about word files and I selected skip and the set was imported without the words. So, I am a little confused.
Thanks.

Rename everything to be safe, this way everything will have its own unique copy that you can tailor and customise to your needs.

You might create one category with all your words and create different playlists for each day. I'm not sure if that would save you time over the method you're currently using, but it might enable faster changes and a reduction of the step of then having to create a playlist from each category.

Hi Shuki
I've used your suggestion you gave to Ayesha Nicole. What I'm doing is building a category with different animals in my home language & then I want to do the same in English, but when I imported my renamed Category, it only imported my first Animal, & not the rest, I've renamed everything except the "Media File Name Conflict" which I've set to "Rename if same size".
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Are you using v1.5? If not, please upgrade to the latest version in your Account Management.
When you import, you will see Show advanced options. click on it to reveal the 3 fields.
Make sure that for the first 2 options, they are BOTH set to RENAME, and the last one (media) set to Replace if same size, otherwise rename.

Hi KL
Thanks for your reply.
I had the new LR installed (but can't remember the version numbers), I have installed the newer version 1.5.200 late last night.
I did set the first two options both to rename the first time around also, & again after installing the newer version. I still get the same thing, only my first "word" gets imported. However, this morning I've noticed that my other "word's" pronunciation, pictures & picture audios are all combined in the first "word".
I've attached a screen shot to explain. "a" is my first word, "b" my second word, etc. They were all separate when I exported them. The picture & file name is my first word.
Cheers,

Can you do 2 things for me:
1. attach the .cat file you are trying to export and import
2. take a screenshot of the import options screen when you're importing the file (make sure it shows all options).

Hi KL
I've tried uploading those files for you, but my .cat file is 10MB & we're only allowed to upload 4.88MB maximum. Is there another way I can get my .cat file to you?

Thanks, I've uploaded my .cat file. The file name is "Diere - Afrika - Enkelvoud & Meervoud - 001.cat", I'm attaching a screenshot of what the category should look like & also a screenshot of the import options screen when I'm importing my category back in.

Thanks. You just exposed a bug!
It's caused by the particular way you name your files, that's why the renaming function works fine for 99% of the time. We will be fixing this for the next update, but for now, can I suggest that you do not name your word files with numbers at the end, or put them in brackets, like "(2)", then there wouldn't cause any conflict with the renaming system.

Hi KL
Thanks for the quick response
. I'll be renaming my files for the time being, but is it fine to use "-" in my file names?

Yes, should be. The trouble with having "-" only occurs when there's trouble with the number endings. So if you change the number endings, everything SHOULD work fine.
This issue will be fixed by the next build anyway - you'll be able to name it whatever you like!
