Can someone tell me how I can easily implement the system of showing 5 words 5 times a day and then retiring one word and adding a new word every day.  I want to save the retired word to show later.  I'm having trouble figuring out how to do this in LR.

i had read the ebook "how to multiply your baby's intelligence if my memory serves me right, the book says retire the word after you show it 15 times to a child, so if you show a word 3 times a day, then after five days you must retire that word. So first day you have one set of 5 words, second day you add another set of 5 words. the book recommends adding  up to 5 sets in all. so from the first day you start to the 5th day of the learning program you will retire 5 words a day and add 5 new words after the fifth day, so preparation of material does come in handy youll never know when you will run out of words, hope this helps you smile

I was acutally referring to LR.  What is the fastest way to retire and word and add a new one in LR?

We have plans to make it very easy for you to retire words in future versions, as this is a commonly-requested feature.

In the meantime, though, the easiest way would be to create "Done" folders and move them out (by dragging and dropping) when you're done with words.

Perhaps other folks doing this could share more.  I believe Nikki does it this way.

Nope, I retire whole categories, but some others do. I think Martina does? She and Domanmom seem to be our resident Doman specialists.

Dear All,

I am a little confused about retiring words and introducing new ones.  It seems that it is easier to retire a complete set since all of the words in the set were introduced at the same time, and have the same duration of repetition, with 15x being the maximum number of times shown to a baby and even less for a toddler (18 months +):

Day 1 - Set 1 (shown 3x)
Day 2 - Set 1 (shown 6x + Set 2 (shown 3x)
Day 3 - Set 1 (shown 9x) + Set 2 (shown 6 x) + Set 3 (shown 3x)
Day 4 - Set 1 (shown 12x) + Set 2 (shown 9x) + Set 3 (shown 6x) + Set 4 (shown 3x)
Day 5 - Set 1 (shown 15x) + Set 2 (shown 12x) + Set 3 (shown 9x) + Set 4 (shown 6x) + Set 5 (shown 3x)

Day 6 - Set 1 (retire) + Set 2 (15x) + Set 3 (12x) + Set 4 (9x) + Set 5 (6x) + Set 6 (3x)
Day 7 - Set 2 (retired) + . . .add Set 7 (3x)

 . . is this what you do nhockaday? . . .anyone else? . .

Thanks,
Ayesha

Day 1 - Set 1 (shown 3x)
Day 2 - Set 1 (show 3x for total of 6x) + Set 2 (shown 3x)
Day 3 - Set 1 (show 3x for total of 9x) + Set 2 (show 3x for total of 6 x) + Set 3   (shown 3x)
Day 4 - Set 1 (show 3x for total of 12x) + Set 2 (show 3x for total of 9x) + Set 3 (show 3x for total of 6x) + Set 4 (shown 3x)
Day 5 - Set 1 (show 3x for total of 15x) + Set 2 (show 3x for total of 12x) + Set 3 (show 3x for total of 9x) + Set 4 (show 3x for total of 6x) + Set 5 (shown 3x)

Now if if you follow Doman strictly on Day 6 you retire 1 card from set one, and replace it iwth a new one. The next day you retire one from set 1 and one from set 2 and replace itm the next day you will retire one from set one, one from set 2 and one from set 3 so that eventually everyday you will be removing one card from each set and replacing it with a new one each day.  The benefit of that over what you had typed is that the child only has to learn one new card in each set each day. Of course when you just start out that means that some words will be seen more than 15x, but once you get going each word will be seen 15x and then replaced.

Dear Linzy & All,

Thank you for that detailed explanation.  It helps somewhat.  On the first day I showed 1 set and added a set each day until I had five sets on the fifth day.  This is when I became confused because I thought we replaced one word in each set after a word had been shown 15 x.  Yet, what I understood from your explanation - it is slightly different.

I will type out relevant excerpts of Step 1 from Chapter 7, of How to Teach Your Baby to Read (2002) and perhaps it will be more clear to me  blink

* * *

Pages 118 -

THE FIRST STEP - Single Words

The first step in teaching your child to read begins with the use of just fifteen words.  When your child has learned these fifteen words he is ready to progress to the vocabularies themselves.
. . .
Now the fun begins.  Simply hold up the word Mommy, (. . . through the fifth word. and end with lots of Love, hugs, and kisses.)

Repeat this three times during the first day, exactly as described above.  Take a break between sessions (at least 15 minutes).  Make sure the cards in a different order each time.

The first day is now over and you have taken the first step in teaching your child to read.  (You have invested at most three minutes.)

The second day, repeat the basic session three times.  Add a second set of five new words.  This new set should be seen three times throughout the day, just like the first set, making  a total of six sessions.

At the end of each session tell the child he is very good and very bright.  Tell him that you are very proud of him and that you love him very much.  It is wise to hug him and express your love for him physically.

. . .

Children learn at lightning speed---if you show them the words more than three times a day you will bore them.  If you show your child a single cards for more than a second you will lose him.  Now simply say the name of each word as you show it, without saying, "This says...".

On the third day, add a third set of five new words.  Now you are teaching your child three sets of reading words, five words in each set, each set three times a day.  You and your child are now enjoying a total of nine reading sessions spread out during the day, equaling a few minutes in all.

The first fifteen words that you teach your child should be made up of the most familiar and enjoyable words around him.  These words should include the names of immeidate family members, relatives, family pets, favorite foods, objects in the house, and favorite activities.  It is impossible to include an exact list here since each child's first fifteen words will be personal and therefore different.

The only warning sign in the entire process of learning to read is boredom.  Never bore your child.  Going too slowly is much more like to bore him than going too quickly.  Remeber that this bright baby can be learning, say, Portuguese at this time, so don't bore him.  Consider the splendid thing you have just accomplished.  Your child has just conquered the ost difficult thing he will have to do in the entire business of reading---and perhaps in the entire business of learning, since is reading is the very basis of learning.

. . .

Add the self words/parts of the body . . .

Here is the method you should use from this point on in adding new words and taking out old ones:  simply remove one word from each set that has already been taught for five days and replace the word with a new one in each set.  Your child's first three sets have already been seen for a week so you may now begin to take out an old word in each set and put in a new one each day.  Five days from now, retire an old word from each of the two sets you have just added in.  From this point on, you should add one new word to each set daily and put away an old word.  We call this process of putting away an old word, "retirement."  However, every retired word will later be called back to active duty when we get to the second, third, fourth, and fifth steps, as you will see shortly.

Mother's find that if they write the date in pencil on the back of the reading card they can easily tell which words have been shown longest and are ready to be retired.

When this system is working smoothly, gradually add a fourth set of words and then a fifth set of words to your daily program.  Continue to retire one old word and add one new word to each set, as described above.

DAILY PROGRAM

Daily Content > 5 sets
One Session > 1 set (5 words) shown once
Frequency > 3x daily each set
Intensity > 3-inch red words
Duration > 5 seconds
New Words > 5 daily (1 in each set)
Retired Words > 5 daily (1 in each set)
Life Span of Each Word > 3 x daily for 5 days = 15 x
Principle > Always stop before your child wants to stop

In summary, you will be teaching twenty-five words daily, divided into five sets of five words each.  Your child will be seeing five new words daily or one new word in each set, and five words will be retired each day.

* * *

I will post again with my understanding of the "schedule" as described above.

No matter what method you use to get to that point the eventual goal is to eventually be removing one card from each set each day and adding 1 new one, with each word being seen 15 times.

I have all of my playlists (I use playlists, but you can just as easily use categories) out in a list. I play 5 playlists from the top of the list 3 times a day. Then I retire those 5 playlists to a folder named "played". I put them into the folder in no particular order so they will be mixed up when I take them out of the folder. Once my list is depleted, I delete the folder, and when it asks me if I want to delete the files within the folder, I say no. Then all the files will be back in list form, and I start over again.

I would love LR to enable retiring and adding new words easier way, too.
As Nikki described it is possible to retire the whole categories. I wanted myself to follow recommendations of Glenn Doman and retire every day 1 word from each category and add a new one - one of the possible way (but not that effective) is to:
- Put as many related words into one category (all colors together, all animals, all shapes, all presidents, all ....)
- Create 3 files of the same category - (for example Animals - to add, Animals - to show, Animals - retired) - all words should be in Animals - to add, only 5 of them should be in Animals to show
- Show three times every day 5 pictures of Animals to show and every evening move one picture from "to add category"  to "to show" and retire the oldest word from "to show" to "retired" (you need to keep track which one is the oldest).

Ever since Little Math is released I found it so effective in adding and retiring numbers that I decided to use it for teaching reading instead of using Little Reader - of course untill better version of Little Reader with this feature is released. It is only flashing the words without pictures but this is the way how Doman describes it anyway]. smile
I still use little Reader to show words AND pictures but I do not retire and add words anymore as Doman recommends and as I used to do it as described above.
Here is the post what I wrote about teaching reading using LM.
http://forum.brillkids.com/little-math/tip-lm-is-even-great-for-teaching-babies-to-read-according-to-doman's-method/

So if someone wants to really follow Doman's recomendation for teaching reading - Little Math is really great for it!
You can so easily and quickly create words and attach sounds to it if you wish to. And you do not have to watch what is the oldest word to retire! And you can so easily retire and add new words! It gives your teaching great schedule that is so easy to follow.

Dear Pupisek,

Thank you for the tips!  I will try each method and see what works best for me in LR until I am able to acquire LM.

Thanks again!
