New Build Release - Little Reader (BETA) 1.05b

Special Announcement: We have just released a new build - Little Reader BETA 1.05b.  If you have downloaded the previous 1.05, we recommend that you kindly download this new build and reinstall, as it addresses a few important bugs that we have caught quite early on.

These are the changes that we made for BETA 1.05b:
   •   Before playing back a Category or Playlist, Little Reader will check all the word files to make sure that the media files specified in the word file exists in the path previously set.  If Little Reader finds that there is a file missing, it will give you a warning dialog.  This will alert you that you may have deleted or moved the files unnecessarily, and therefore prompt you to edit the words as needed.
   •   We've also fixed the "Extend Beta Testing License" button on the front page.  It was originally pointing to the wrong link, and we have corrected this error for people who would like to make requests to extend their beta testing license.

New Build Release - Little Reader BETA 1.05

We have just released our latest beta testing build for Little Reader, so please be sure to update and download!

We would also like to announce that the beta testing period is drawing to a close, and we are inviting everyone to be more active posting in our forums in order to maximize our Double Your Loyalty Points Promotion (only available during beta testing period). Your points can be used to redeem valuable discounts as well as FREE copies of Little Reader and our other software products when they are released.

NOTE: Your previous version will need to be uninstalled, but you do not have to do it manually.  Simply click on the installation file and it will prompt you to uninstall your old program and proceed to do it for you.  If you've already added new words, not to worry, just make sure NOT to choose to delete all of your existing files during the uninstall.  When you open your new Little Reader, your files will still be there. 

You can check your beta version by clicking on the 'HELP' dropdown on the upper left corner of Little Reader and clicking on 'About Little Reader.'

Here’s a list of the new features we've added, as well as the changes we’ve made:

The Little Reader User Interface
We gave Little Reader a facelift! The fonts and buttons are now sharper and clearer, and the lines of the program are now cleaner and more streamlined.



The Folder Function – Saved Setting
We’ve received a lot of requests for this one, so here it is: the folders you have created for your word libraries will now “remember” to open and close themselves, depending on your last viewed setting. The folders will no longer auto-expand as it did in the last build.



Screen Name – Now Clickable and More Organized
The Screen Name feature, which we released in the last build, now has an added feature: you will be able to click on the Category or Playlist author’s name to view a list of all the author’s contributions in the forum!



Rotate Media Function – Now Rotates Pictures, Videos, Pronunciations, and Picture Audio
In the previous build, clicking on the rotate media setting in the Playback screen will only rotate the images you have attached to the Category or Playlist. With the improved Rotate Media function, you can now rotate all the media attachments for your words!



Print Function – Fixed Image Aspect Ratio
We have fixed this major printing bug – the images will no longer be distorted when you try printing hard copies of your flash card using this function.



Word Display Box – Display Up To Three Lines
For longer word slides in categories and playlists, using the word display in the Word Library screen will enable you to view up to three lines of text!



New and Improved Help Menu
We have updated and created a new Help Menu for all of you Little Reader users – the new manual is now searchable and indexed, making searching for your help topics a breeze.



Purge Unused Media
Having trouble managing all the media files you have that you are no longer using after you have deleted words and categories? You now have an option to auto-delete them! Simply click on the File link on the upper left hand corner of your Little Reader, and you will be shown a list of files in your Media Library Folder that are no longer linked to any word files that you have.



Note: This will not delete any files that are stored outside the Media Library Folder.

General Bug Fixes:
We have also fixed a great number of coding errors, so hopefully many of the recently reported bugs will have been fixed. We do advise everyone to still keep an eye out for any bugs that you have encountered before, and please do report any bugs and errors to us as soon as you encounter them with a complete description of what, how, and when it happened.

The new releases always catch me without DSL connection !!  I'll have to wait till after the weekend to try this one ;( I can't wait

    What about alphabetical sorting function??? It woud really help me since I try to translate as many categories into Czech!! It is so difficult and time consuming to use arrows to move related categories together   And even in the Export list - it is so difficult to export without this function because there are so many names and they are in so mixed order (I do not even know why).

And what about the record function? I hope you will make it functional. I really need it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

And what about the promised function for following Glenn Doman's method and adding and retiring words to and from a category? KL, you promised those "checking box" next to words in category...

And what about the problem with playing video files? I used avi, wmv, flp and none of them worked properly. Is it resolved yet?

Is everything going to be in next, the final version?? We will not Beta test if it works properly?

I agree with Pupisek about the alphabateical sorting and the videos working / not..I really need those two as well In all fairness, I haven't tried the videos yet on my computer because of my slow connection, so I don't know if it's fixed or not

OK, I've got good news and bad news on this.

The bad news is, the sorting feature will not make it to v1 of the commercial build.  The reason for that is also the good news, which is that it will be part of a major revamp of the Playback and Word Library screens which involves integrating the Playback stats directly into those screens, as well as some other improvements - eg., you will be able to sort not just by name, but also by last-played and number of times played, as well as by author.  This will be a big change and so it will not make it in time for v1 commercial release, but only for v2, for which we will begin beta testing immediately after v1 release. (Purchasers of v1 will get free upgrades, of course).

As for the retiring feature, it's also a similar case. It will definitely be available in a future version, but it's part of another bigger feature which I'm very excited about, but unfortunately cannot reveal right now.

We'll be looking into the video issue again.  It's a complicated issue because the problem is not 100% a Little Reader issue, but one that depends on codecs that are installed on the users computer.  We're still trying to figure what is the best way to deal with this and balance competing requirements of users (eg., the easiest thing is to include the codec packs into LR, but that would drastically increase the download size of the installation file).

Does it mean that immediately after v1 of Little Reader is launched, new Beta Testing of v2 of Little Reader starts with beta licence key of v2 of  Little Reader?
I hope that even if you did not mention Record function, it is going to be part of NEW Little Reader as well.

Beta testing for v2 of Little Reader will be a "closed beta", only be available for those who have a commercial license of v1 (whether purchased or redeemed with points), and for active members of our community.  Details will be released closer to the time.

I already downloaded the new release and I noticed a significant improvement.  I noticed that files (importing) open more quickly than the older versions.

However, if I may make a suggestion, I hope you will come up with newer versions that allow us to download and play them in our handheld PDA's.  This will become very useful especially when we go on trips and I don't have my laptop.  I noticed that my son calms down when I let him play with my Palm T/X.  It also encourages him to use his fine motor skills.

In any case, I am very happy with the improvements that you've made.  Last night I downloaded lots of word lists and my son enjoyed them.  He was very attentive and repeated the words he heard from the multimedia files.

I re-installed the version 1.05b but I am not sure if this version is the same as 1.05 which I have installed earlier.  Please clarify.

Anyway, thanks for the easy installation steps as I am not familiar with computer at all.

I am a new comer for the brilliant site.  And, I downloaded the Little Reader today and showed that it is Ver. 1.05.  Should I update it?    if so, where can I find the update?

I asked for the latest download of little reader and when I finally figured out how to install it, it says on the front "1.05...not 105b. Yet b was already out when I asked for the link... I have been trying to import forum downloads, but sometimes it says I already have that file when I dont think i do... is there any way the list will just paly automatically or do I have to keep clicking?  And if i put downloads onto DVD will it just play like a movie or will I have to click and click and click with the remote? Can I make it just play... and play..

Managed to download little reader v1.05b but can't launch the program. Error msg shown as follow :-

"Application has encountered an unexpected error. All unsaved data will be lost. See error.log for details. The application will terminate now."

Pls advise how to resolve this. Thanks.
