Hi Jasmine,

I officially resigned in June. Will be doing permanent locum from August, fixed hours, no calls big grin Very happy for now but don't think i will be happy doing locum in the long run. However, career has taken a back seat to make space for my DS's formative years. I think it is worth it and that's most important.

I've tried card holders but my DS ended up destroying the clear holders as well as the card. Nowadays, i print on glossy ivory card if I don't laminate. I find that if i want to flash fast and maintain his attention, the computer is always better. I usually laminate stuff that i let him handle hands on such as the 3 part cards and science flashcardsz. BTW, my laminator's back. LOL Took 1 week only, so pleasantly surprised.

I have fun thinkers, WWW, logico piccolo and primo. My DS loves the fun thinkers puzzle cause he can throw them everywhere. We have used the pieces for colour sorting, matching beads to numbers, stacking,etc.(montessori/tot tray activities). The primo board is being used to practice grip and fine motor movement. The WWW has been moved to a higher level shelf with the paperbacks picture books after he tore a page, ok maybe not the entire page but still...now he is only allowed board books until further notice. Yes, he's a little violent. Wonder where he got that from..

Hi Jasmine,

We have Grolier Fun Thinkers, Smart Brain and Words, Words, Words, too. We also have the Logico series - Primo, Piccolo and Maximo (I got the Maximo because my older son who is 4.5years is almost done with the Piccolo series). Your son is about the same age as my younger son. He loves playing with the Fun Thinkers grid - probably because he often sees me working on it with my older son. He likes to put the numbers in so we use it like a puzzle in itself for numbers and colours.

With Smart Brain, you can demonstrate to him how things work. He might be too young to do it himself, but he can definitely watch how you do it.

Words, Words, Words is great for him at this age so you should definitely read it to him. In fact any book at this age is great. I understand where Jessica's coming from with the rough handling, though, because my younger son sounds exactly the same. I guess it depends on your child. I found my older son at 20 months was terrific with books - I can count on one hand the number of pages he's ever torn from rough handling. It was because of my younger son that I had to move all the books (except board books) to a higher shelf. He's getting a little better but I still can't leave him alone with a book. It is difficult to restrict him solely to boardbooks - he always wants the books his brother is reading obviously because they're more interesting than his own books. I only let him handle the paper books when he is supervised. Unfortunately, there are still accidents, but I talk him through it - "I'm taking the book away because you were too rough - see, this is what you did."

Sorry girls,  had a minor problem with my internet connection therefore the VERY late reply. First and foremost, THANKS! great ideas, and I did speak to momtoisaac (Jessica), previous work-mate and my current GO-TO-MOM..(winks to Jess). Regarding the Funthinkers, both my babies are having fun with it, and the older one get almost 100% correct answers! So proud of him! and for the little one, she's still stacking and grouping colours. Smartbrain, I did try it with my 21 mo, but he seemed disinterested, maybe I'll give it a rest, and retry later. Words words words is a big hit  LOL , never thought it would be, but my kids still surprise me!

I was discussing with Jess yesterday regarding her daily curriculum, I'm having problems seeing what to do with my DS and DD and think I'm jumbling it all up... and making a mess in the process, she has an excellent daily curriculum on her blog... but I don't have much Montessori materials and if there's any other way anyone else can help me get a good curriculum for my 21 and 9 mo... I'd be grateful!!!

Shen-Li, I'm HOOKED on to your blog... great work, btw!

Hi Mommies,

This is Noel from Singapore, i have a three years son whom i have been homeschooling supplemented with Shichida class for the past one year.

The followings are what i've tried with my son for the past three years:
1. Glenn Doman English, dots cards, encyclopedic cards and picture dictionary CD x 10 -

Picture dictionary CD: worth the money, please buy when they've sales, i bought it at 50% off for all 10 CDs.
English cards: DIY the english cards with red and black markers on blank cards will do.
Encyclopedic cards :Good and my boy can recite Mahatma Gandhi as the world leader, he ever asked me who is leader? I said him and he replied "NO, it's Mahatma Gandhi".

2.  Shichida - excellent program, my son been attending for one year and he knows addition pretty when he was only 2.5 years old but my son will stop when he turned four as i read that the left brain dominance will set in when kids are four and above but we can continue to do memory games and linking memory to strengthen the right brain.  Please visit http://www.shichidaparents.com/rc/linking_memory.html for shichida materials for home practice.  It is just a very small fraction of the shichida program.

3.  Tweedlewink - My son is not very interested but it is a good program, kinda bored for me compared to LR/LM.

4. Memory magic - Cheap but quite good for the eye training and linking memory.

5. Wink to Learn Chinese DVD - My son loves it though the flashing speed is too slow and left brain ability will set in.

6. Leapfrog DVDs - Letter factory, Words factory are fantastic program for kids to learn phonics.

7. Daily reading helps alot in language ability, my boy can speak like a four years old kid when he was 2 years old.  You can buy books from www.bookdeposity.com, do compare prices with amazon as some books are cheaper in amazon but most of the books prices are much better in bookdepository.

I think i placed too much emphasis on early childhood education but so far i see excellent results compared to my son's peers. All the efforts are worth it and the results will show in time to come. We must always believe that the best teacher is actually the parents.  Keep our faith strong and persist with whatever that we are doing.

Right brain training shows more pictures than words so Glenn Doman program is geared towards the left brain program. I combined both because i think it is the best combination and even Shichida incorporated left brain activities in their classes.

Please do share more parentings tips with me as i'm constantly on a lookout for better ideas.

Hi ladies,

Thanks for all your helpful information and links. I've just order some puzzles and cards for my little one.
Thanks Jessica for those links you gave me. I ordered to Usleducation.com and wait to receive  smile

I also order some flashcards to wateringcan and ask for some blank cards too. She gave me two numbers which she order them her cards. I called one of them and he told me that I should at least order 1000 cards and each is 15 cen ( he was not sure about the price) is it normal price for blank card? Where do you buy your cards? And what kind of cards is better?
Shichida sell each blank card 20 cen.

HI Ella,

I print my flashcards as A5s. I find them easier to handle and print. I usually buy 220gm A4 and cut them into halves. More economical. Never used cards before.

After flashing, I will select some cards and place them in a reusable folder for my DS to use as a busy book. This is to keep him entertained when I am busy. Hence, the busy book  LOL

Otherwise, very sad to see all the papers lying on the selves unused.

I love puzzles too, seriously, I need to stop colecting them. USL puzzles are quite sturdy when it comes to chewing and throwing. Better than Melissa and Doug's peg puzzle. Want to see part of my puzzle collection?

Hi Jessica,

I now what you are talking about. LO is now 10 mo and love shewing every thing. Last week I bought 3 Melissa and Doug number, shape and pet puzzles and opened one for her. After 5 min I saw a small piece of it's paper in her mouth ohmy  laugh

I should try USL puzzles. smile

OMG, you are really puzzles lover LOL
So many puzzles you have

It's good idea to print on normal A4 papers. I should pay at least 150 rm to buy cards and more for printer cartridges. I can simply escape cards and save money to print more!
But the normal A4 is torn more often! And that can be a problem . My LO want to catch card sometimes when I'm flashing for her

Hi Ella,

I know what you mean when you say CATCHING CARDS... my 10 mo fav activity!!! What I do is, I sit her down in her fav chair...(her potty!!!!- unused, I know, sad!), and I flash it at a distance she can't reach. I also say the words in different tones of voice as I flash eg: low pitch, high pitch, squeaky, like a child... just to keep her interested. I know i sound ridiculous when I do it, and my husband always laughs when I do it... so I chase him away from the room for the 3-5 minutes that I flash. It works for me. LOL

And yep, following Jess, I use A5 too, just have to cut the A4 in half... simple, and cheap

Puzzles huh?... I had the Chuggington ones, but my son, the little lamb, chewed it all up... threw it away!!! hmmmm... USL puzzles, should take a look!... Thanks! Wink

1000 pcs of blank cards for 15cent each card is quite expensive.  I bought from Singapore supplier for about 6cent and can cut into many sizes, A4 & A5. A4 is better as you can use powerpoint to prepare flashcards and can print with your printer, 270gsm can fit into my printer and turned out quite well.

Try to bargain for 7-8cent ringgit per cards.

Don't buy blank flashcards from Shichida as it is too expensive, Shichida probably got from the same supplier.

IQ genius, Mandala, Memory board, Language genius cards and image training booklets are worth buying.

Hi Noeltay13,

Thank you for your comment. Actually the blank cards is A5 size! You think it's too much? So I should still searching but I don't know where should I ask!!   Sad

I haven't bought anything from shichida yet but I'm going to buy next week. I always think about the best materials I can buy from shichida because if I want to buy all products it will be tooooooo much and I don't think it is worth!
With your help now I know what I want next Thursday, thank you  smile

Just to clarify some points:

Ella: The A4 size paper I use is at least 220gm and above. The normal A4 that we use for other documents would be about 80gm. Therefore, I can flash fast, it is quite impossible to flash fast with a 80 gm A4.

Jasmine: The USL puzzles are made in China but theirs are of better quality. If you want to look for so-so quality puzzles or wooden toys, check out Fun and Cheer in Bukit Tinggi 2. I'll post some of the goodies I got from there on my blog soon once I find the time. It's quite nice, really cheap. I'll mod podge everything I get from there even though it says non toxic paint. I 'kiasi' (scared to die) cause made in China and dirt cheap.

Have a great weekend  smile

Dear Jessica,

I want to buy finger paint for my LO, have you ever tried this from USL?
They told me it's 800 ml but I'm not sure if it's safe for 10 mo or not? And the store is too far for me to go, check and buy!!
I don't know what should I do? Trust or just omit it!!! confused

Hi Ella,

You're most welcome. We're learning from one another. We have common goals, to nurture our young with our very best.

I have tried Crayola finger paint but too watery.  Crayola has the tiny paint beads for babies. I think better to get Crayola as they're reputable.  Don't risk it.

HI ladies

Ella, thanks for dropping by my blog and the wonderful comment.

Love to share whatever I have learned. It is tough getting some things in Malaysia.

Some art and craft stuff we love:

1. Do dot markers (Brand: Alex) from Think Toys RM 49. Says washable but not very washable. Takes a day or two to wash off.
2, Finger paint. (Peblo) which  bought from Craft Haven in One Utama . Crayola's watery. Please don't get the ones from USL. They looked scary. It's tempera. For older children only.
3. Since Tiger still mouths secretly when I am not looking, currently we finger paint with yogurt or instant pudding mixed with fruit. Yummy and fun!! Keep the session short though, in Malaysia, you will be surrounded with flies. We usually paint in the late afternoon to evening period of the day, less flies and then straight to the inflatable pool. Tiger's favourite activity for the weekends.
4. Stickers. Get cheap stickers and let them stick away. Always a hit
5. Crayons. I got the triangular ones from Crayola. Helps with tripod grip for writing later. Never forced Tiger to hold the crayons properly, he just observed and did it. Maybe it's the shape of the crayons.

If you child is still mouthing heavily, do hold on with art material even if it says non toxic. Otherwise use homemade recipe for playdough and finger paints. The different textures alone stimulate their senses. Will share some tried and tested recipes on my blog soon. Gotta go finish my secret project for Tiger.
