Welcome Michelle! Congrats on your baby boy!

You may have to be a little more aware of his needs & a little more cautious because of his heart but there is still a lot that you can do. Here is a list of suggestions:

Thanks so much! I actually used your blog, Q's and Andi's to get A TON of info but somehow missed adding brillkids. Not sure how... I remember reading about a therapy bulletin board to keep all his therapies/programming straight... Was it on your blog? I can't seem to find it... And I need to read through the brill kids stuff to know where to start again. We used the infant stim flashcards when he was tiny... Then I seemed to slack a bit and need to get back to work/fun!

I don't think it's my organizing system you're thinking of:

I've been using this system lately:

I'm wondering if you're looking for this post:

Hi All,

My name is Lauren and I have a 21-month old daughter, Ellie, who happens to have Down syndrome. She is really excelling in all areas and I am very interested in fostering her love of learning. Currently, she has over 40 words, 125 signs, and knows all of her letters. I would love to find an early literacy program that she would enjoy. We love the free Brillkids app but are interested in other resources as well. Can anybody help to point me in the right direction? Thank you! I look forward to learning from everybody here.

Lauren

New here but I am very interested in trying the Little Reader. My son O is 18 months and has Down Syndrome. I am hoping this program can increase his understanding and vocabulary since he is still not signing back to us yet ( we have been signing to him since birth!). I am excited to get started with the program and to read through all of the interesting posts.

Hi, I have a 14-month old daughter with Down syndrome. We've been reading books to her practically since birth but I have not yet started a formal reading curriculum. I am researching various programs and I'm happy to have found this forum!

We started the Baby Signing Time videos at around 9 months. I wish I could brag and say she knows zillions of signs but the reality is that the only two she uses consistently are waving and clapping. She apparently hasn't yet caught on to the idea that symbols (signs, written or spoken words) can represent objects. However, she is very interested in picture books so I believe she understand more than she lets on at this point!

Welcome Jeanette!

I bet she does understand more than she lets on & once she starts signing she will likely pick them up faster & faster. Just because she isn't using the signs doesn't mean that she doesn't understand just that she isn't ready to output the information.

This is a great time to start on reading & it's possible they she may be getting a head start that you aren't aware of!  We were teaching sight words at the same age that dd was watching Signing Time & eventually realized that she was learning to read the words that they showed while teaching each sign!  I also  know of another little boy who was not being taught sight words but as a preschooler taught himself quite a few sight words from the videos. Once his parents realized they started teaching him more words & he was reading well before he started school.

Hi everyone!  I have been a silent lurker for a while and so grateful to have found this forum. Like everyone has said, it's a treasure trove of information!  My lil one was diagnosed with mild hypotonic cerebral palsy. I am juggling therapy schedules, doing doman inspired stuff at home, and a full time job. He's 16 months old and loves his flashcards!  I'm eager to start LR and LM when I'm done with some home made doman flashcards. I'm using sparkabilities and have just ordered tweedlewink. It gets overwhelming at times but I know it will all come together eventually. Crossing my fingers... I appreciate all the great ideas in this forum!

Hi, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself. We have 6 children, and I'm here because of our youngest, who has Down syndrome. We're doing flash cards (the old fashioned way) now, but I have heard great things about Brill Kids. I think Moriah would love it.

Hi all,
I'm relatively new here, signed up a little while ago, but it has taken time to actually look at the forum!
I'm Bec and have two boys Sam (4) and Ben (2, has Down syndrome).
We've started using the free Little Reader on the iPad, but are hoping to upgrade to the full version soon as Ben is finally happy to sit still and watch it! We are also doing key word signing and a Hanen program, and if I get around to it, may also do some flash cards.

Hi,
I'm Erica, mom of 3, the youngest just turned one and has down syndrome.  I've been using the free download flash cards on the site since he was about 8 or 9 months and he loves them!  I think I'm going to have to break down and start laminating them though, because he wants to play with them and I'd hate to ruin his fun just so he won't wrinkle them :-).

Hi Everyone,

I have a wonderful 5 year old daughter who has Down Syndrome. Her name is Brooklyn and she is currently in Kindergarten. She is a happy and healthy little girl who enjoys riding her tricycle (just recently figured out the pedaling concept and now loves it!), going to the park, listening to music and looking at books.  We also have a 3 year old little girl who is not of special needs. They get along like most sisters do....!

We live in Canada and are lucky to be supported in our community with various social and therapeutic programs. I purchased a used copy of the Your Baby
Can Read system and Brooklyn is loving it. Her verbalization has improved and we are amazed at how she is rolling through the program. I am considering Brill Kids as a system that I would like to try next. I have been reading some of the posts and am excited by the positive responses!

I look forward to reading and learning about the different families and their strategies.

Brad
