Rt. now thay have a very good deal on the hooked on phonics for babies.  It looks like more stimulation stuff then actual reading, has anyone tried this program...do you like it and how does it compare to the doman method???

I believe Joha used it, and I think she stopped using it once she learned of programs that actually teach something. You can't even compare it to Doman. It is not a reading program. It is mostly music and rhymes.

nhockaday is right! (good memmory my friend smile ) This was the first program I used, but this was before I found out about all the other wonderful programs that there are out there starting with Doman's method. I don't think neccesarily that HOP doesn't teach anything, but I think that it is a program that can be done it a couple of months instead of the 15 months they suggest. Also, I do not think the words they learn are that helpful. I got YBCR and my daughter loves it. After I started showing YBCR videos, I tried to show her the HOP video and she will start crying, so I have not tried to show it to her again. Having said that, I like the fact they highlight the words when they are singing and we need to remember that all the exposure to written language helps the learning process.

The books are nice because they have a few words per page and the nursery rhymes CD is excelent. I keep it in my car all the time my daughter loves it.

In conclusion, I do not think is a bad program I just think that there are much better programs that can help you maximize your baby's prime time to learn. If you have it, I 'll definetly try to use it as a supplement, but not as the main program.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope this helps you a little bit.  smile

Thank you both I was asked to try HOP from an educator for my toddler, but I think I will stick with what I am doing now. He is actually saying parts of his ABC's thanks to flashcards, and LR. Even my infant is making the sounds that some letters make. He has his older brother to listen to but both use LR and flashcards, plus I placed an ABC border up in their room. Thanks for the advice. However we are using HOP in Spanish just for a few months, although I found it to be incomplete in some ways. Both watch Dora, Handy Manny, and Diego and love them. The toddler picks up words from all three all the time. One morning he woke up and instead of saying his normal he said olah (spelling probably wrong) so I know he had to have heard it from them. My Spanish is a little rusty, even though I taught the basics to primary grades years ago.

We were talking about the baby program. It is a lot different than their phonics programs. I think their regular programs can help learn phonics.

Okay. I didn't realize they were so many different ones. I have not been working with phonics for a while now.

yeah, I think they have quite a few different programs. I actually have a pre-k program, but I haven't looked at it yet. It is supposed to teach letters and sounds and other pre-reading stuff.

I can let you know what I think once I look at it. I just don't have enough hours in a day, you know? I wanted to read through the parent's guide before I started it. It came with 5 books, CD ROMS, workbooks, stickers, flash cards, progress charts, etc. It looks pretty good.

I understand that, no time here either. I spend 50% of the day keeping house, and 50% teaching or preparing to teach, somewhere in between we have our church and the ministry.

Thanks Nikita for the video clips.

I used hooked on phonics to teach my son when he was 4, I think it's really an excellent product. I didn't know about flashcards and Doman method then, so it was really great for teaching basics of phonics and just under a year, he's a fantastic reader, he reads just about anything now.

I also got the HOP for babies for my 5mo, it's more of a stimulation thing than an actual teaching resource. I play the songs to her all the time and we read the books together and she seems to enjoy the books - she loves chewing on them as well!! The books are nice, colorful and few words per page.

I really would say, HOP is good for older kids if you want to teach phonics,I would definitely use it again for my daughter when she gets older. for babies....... well if it comes at a discount, maybe buy it, otherwise, regular books etc would do. - well, that's just my opinion from using it with m,y kids.

I understand this thread is about HOP for babies, but just wanted to add my own HOP story.  I am a former kindergarten teacher, so I know how to teach.  Before my son was 2 he knew all his upper and lower case letters randomly and also knew the sounds each made. At three years old, I started HOP Preschool Edition.  Since he already knew his letters and sounds it was a waste of time. However, if your child does not yet know these things, this is an awesome program.  He is now 3.5 years old and I started him on the HOP Kindergarten Edition. He is doing great! Already learning how to read. He is so proud that he can read the books that come with the program. I would recommend this program whole heartedly.  As for teaching babies, I used simple ABC books. I liked the little cardboard books (one book for each letter).  Target sells the Baby Einstein books like this.  They were well used by three years old. We read these books every day. All 26 of them! We also used them for flashcards for letter names and sounds.  This along with watching Leap Frog letters really helped him!

I recently bought the HOP Learn to Read deluxe set (nothing in it is for babies, I specifically wanted phonics materials, not just baby Einstein type videos or anything like that, DD already knows shapes, colors, etc so I figured it would be useless for us, I really know nothing about their "baby" program. This deluxe program has the pre-k through 2nd grade programs in the kit. I mainly bought it for the DVD's, there are 2 DVD's, 2 works books, reading books, charts & stickers, for each of the 4 grade levels PRE-K through 2nd. I used a code HOP40 to get 40% off the regular price.

I have a "repeat all" option on my DVD player to make the dvd's run straight through. Otherwise, the dvd chapters are only 5 minutes long or so. I am satisfied with the program but it's definitely not as exciting as some of the others out there although the animation and picture sound quality is excellent. Sometimes the repetitive word flashing (clip....chip....lip....blip....stuff like that) can get a bit boring to me but my daughter doesn't seem to mind. I think I might get Rock & Learn Phonics soon, it looks very "in your face" visually appealing.

I use the HOP DVD's with my daughter (22 months) but not really my son (9 months). She doesn't really watch non-educational shows at all with the exception of the occasional wonderpets DVD smile her favorite) so she tolerates HOP just fine. Some of the clips are only of words/letters and others have music and song. (Like the Big Pig song....the lyrics are something like There was a PIG and he was BIG he wore a WIG and danced a JIG and ate a FIG he was a BIG BIG PIG....all of the capitalized words are flashed on the screen as they sing with animations.)

They are made to be watched one chapter at a time, then read the book and do the work book. The whole 3 part lesson thing is supposed to take 15-20 minutes I think. She is too young/immature for a formal lesson like that. So I just let the DVD play straight through during quiet time before bed or during playtime. Later, we'll sit down and read through the books a few at a time at her pace when we have reading time throughout the day. The easier books are a lot of "Pat is a cat. Pat has a mat." type of thing. We ignore the workbooks altogether right now because the PRE-K ones are all letter recognition/sounds (which she already knows) and all of the others are writing. She is not ready with the fine motor skills to write yet. So, it's a shame but all of those workbooks are going to sit unused, and by the time she is read for them writing skill wise, she will almost be outgrown them phonic-wise if that makes sense. There are also charts & stickers we don't use because we are not using the program exactly the way it was intended.

We are rotating all of the DVD's in no particular order except the PRE-K ones because she already knows letters/letter sounds. We read through all of the books on a regular basis except the 2nd grade level ones, they are a bit too advanced for her now. She enjoys the books & DVD's and it's a solid program albeit a bit bland at times.

I forgot to mention, there are also two other CDs/DVD's.....Fundamentals DVD and Sing along with sounds and songs audio CD. I haven't looked at or listened to them yet.

There is a also a word flip book to accompany each of the K, 1st, and 2nd grade programs. You can flip the book to open on different pages and make words. Kind of hard to explain. The book is spiral bound and is divided into thirds. The first set of flaps is full of constenants, the second is vowels and the third is constenants again. You can flip it open randomly and try to form words with it.

Lastly, there is a random bonus FUNDAMENTALS workbook and a "make your own book" kit.  Again, they are a little above my daughters work level right now, so we will save them for the future.
