@LittleMamaChamp: Like Korrale4kq, it's in the Letter Blends. Here's evidence that Preschool Prep teaches long and short vowels indirectly:

Controlling R: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/lIGDpEVPzCw&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/lIGDpEVPzCw&rel=1</a>

This is TeachingMyToddler's video showcasing Preschool Prep's book: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/wog816WNrgA&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/wog816WNrgA&rel=1</a>

You see there that there are words that are not taught in the DVD, but they're there.

Well, I trust you that you don't have malicious intent whatsoever, but your advertising has hints of it. So, I would suggest you to clean it up. Since you're relatively a late comer, I think it's important for you to do the homework thoroughly and compare your product with the existing ones. It is your "burden" to prove "superiority" compared to the other products, not the other way around.

I agree with the "why not let your child have ALL - phonics, whole language AND sight words?" way of thinking---I think you should stress that out. AND, you should outline how the combination does not confuse the kids, but could be beneficial. Plus, would more words be helpful instead of a select few to illustrate concepts? And more importantly, will your product engage the kids?

Your link of detailed comparison is certainly very helpful. I really appreciate it. I think you should rather put it into text and pictures instead of lumping them into a huge picture. Plus, put many snippets (5-10 min each) into Youtube that really showcase your product.

I really agree with PokerDad about your target market. You should target new users. For "veterans", you should aim for the "next level". I'm thinking about "read-aloud storybook" DVDs like those scattered over in your DVD package.

How is the structure of your DVD lessons? Do you have reviews built in (instead of having the parent replay the DVD)?

Nida congratulations! I know you have been on the forum for a while, I recognise the name. Is absolutely wonderful to see a new early learning  product available for us all!
So pleased to see you here under your brand name also. Welcome.
Ok so here are my thoughts now we are having chats with the manufacturer  laugh
Ditch the comparison chart. Or at least make it completely thorough, compare it to ALL and every available product out there in this area and then burry it so its much harder to find on your website. Why? Well those of us who wanted to see it would have found it after some searching.  laugh but the average person doesn't need to see it as I believe you shouldn't be trying to encourage them to buy your product over theirs. I believe really you should be offering your product as another set to use in conjugation with theirs. Parents who already have YBCR will still buy your product! Parents who have meet the sight words will still buy your product. In fact they may buy yours first and STILL buy the others purely because it isn't often that kids are happy with jus the same DVDs over and over until they can read. Reguardless of the amount of words in them, kids like variety. (and So do the mums!  LOL )
Your product is not the competition but it is an option. A very viable one too. By having the comparison chart so prominent you are setting yourself up in competition with these other products ( including little reader) and I think you will sell more aiming for complimentary than competition. By using a comparison chart as your main plug you open yourself to criticism about why you didn't include the software based program's and other products like wink to learn or tweedlewink. Which BTW tweedlewink covers phonics, Sightwords and whole language and its a DVD set.
Personally I like your product though I haven't seen it and think reguardless of the advertising launch faults many here would love to see more.
Do you have a sample video you can upload here? Or send one of us a review copy perhaps? This group likes lots of information and values others opinions I think it would be wise to get some outside opinions on this forum.
I wish you all the best. I hope your product becomes popular worldwide!

PokerDad, robbyjo,  Mandabplus3

Again, I want to start off by saying THANKYOU for giving me your inputs!  It's very helpful to gather your insights into this ....

Now, I see that the COMPARISON CHART is the NUMBER ONE THING that has bothered people.  And I think the reasoning is simple - that how dare a startup reading program compare itself to such OLD systems - how arrogant!   mad I never knew a simple comparison chart would generate such strong opinions!   wacko  well, first of all, again, that is not my intention - it's a simple 'comparison chart' that you see a lot of people have - but I will look into editing it, as I have already started - taking into account your suggestions - as my intention was not to be 'malicious' but to do an HONEST COMPARISON of the available systems.

PokerDad - I understand your concern.  It seems like there is lots you disliked about the website - the setup, name, voiceover, return policy, etc.... personally, I myself didn't like the voiceover too much  LOL   I will change it at a later stage as I had already thought of doing, but not right now.  anyhow, as you 'investigated' correctly, I do NOT have a FB account yet - that is true.

Now, setting aside all the other business-related inquiries which you mentioned, I want to say that there is only 3 THINGS I am strictly concerned about:

1.  will your child like viewing my DVDs and ask to watch them over and over again?

2.  will your child learn all the 800+ words (which includes sight words), 250+ words and 250+ sentences as included in the DVDs?

3.  will YOU as the parent be happy with your child's reading progress once they start learning the above?

I genuinely want to know how much my system is going to teach your child - because this is something I'm passionate about.     Everything else comes after that.  This is supposed to TEACH your child how to read - does it do that?

So I have a question to ask you PokerDad - if your child loved my DVDs - they ask to watch them again and again learned all the words, etc I outlined, THEN would you like my product?

I think a parents opinion revolves arout their child's opinion.  If a parent doesn't like a DVD (for whatever reason), but a CHILD likes it and learns alot from it, then that DVD naturally becomes their parent's favorite.  So I would let a child be the *ultimate* judge of my products on that!    rolleyes

As far as return policy is concerned, can you tell me why it's horrible - please compare to HOP and YBCR and tell me - theirs is similar.  I would say such return policies are the 'standard'.

Now, as far as the comparison chart is concerned, maybe it's viewed as being 'arrogant' - once again, that's not my intention and I myself am a pretty humble person - it's based on FACTS and there is nothing *wrong* about those facts ... but then again, it comes down to 'how dare a new company' --- maybe better would be for me to let children be the judge of my product first.  LOL

There are children closeby who have viewed it and they love it - I KNOW children will learn these words, phrases and sentences as outlined in my system (i'm not being arrogant - but as a mother I firsthand know how a child's mind works) - And yes, it's all completely animated - there is lots and LOTS of variety.  'Phonics' series is different from 'whole language' series, which is different from 'sight words' series.  There is a mother blogger who wanted to review this and I may give this product soon.

This product will need time before reviews start coming in - Yes, I do plan on putting up short snippets in YouTube - but at a slightly later stage.  Whew, that's a lot, but I love it!  The positive, the negative, I'm open to it all!

I'm heading out the door, but hold on a second. Not all of my items were negative. The voice over is good. My thought was that if you put that much into producing a little commercial, you probably put that much into the product as well. That's not negative at all, just an impression. Most of my items were just impressions.

I don't think the comparison chart is a "how dare you" sort of reaction; more like a "wow, that's not really necessary" sort of reaction. I did notice like the others did about the sight words thing. FWIW, I hate the sight words but am using their other stuff to augment - there are things I like and things I don't. The best thing they have is the video flashcards; I wish they'd have like a half hour set of flash cards for each product - that way I could toggle to any point in the video and watch it randomly throw up the cards.

Return policy - remember this was my impression. It says 15 days, then it says 30 days. I appreciate the effort there, but it's really just a token effort since this is the minimum on a merchant account. I'm speaking mostly from a business side on this more than a consumer. A rock solid business return would be 90 days, and really gutsy would be a YEAR. Where I'm from, these durations are not uncommon.

Gotta run, will be back later. Don't despair, I mostly liked your presentation

PokerDad - no problem.  Actually ALOT more went into the product itself (3+ years) than that small video, which was completed in a matter of days with minimal input from me.
And all critics are taken in a good way - that's why I'm spending so much time getting your input on the website, etc.  Because I need more input from people/parents like you who can tell me your preferences.
I have already taken the children and kids into account when creating product.  Now I want to take the PARENTS into account in terms of how they like the way this information is presented.
I think the comparison chart is giving a subtle feeling of 'aggression' which people are not liking, especially since many of the parents are using those products themselves with their children.  I completely understand and respect that.  Just out of this respect I will seriously think about revamping the whole chart, or removing it altogether (although I really like the idea of putting 'numbers' instead of x and check marks) - but there was nothing 'dishonest' about it from my side as all the numbers were based on FACTS - although the 'parts' vs 'whole' of product caused some issues .
I think, from the sound of it, all of you would prefer to see a brief 'preview' of the content of the DVDs as opposed to the promo video itself - I think that will be more helpful to you ... am I right?
So how about this (although this was not part of the original plan) - I will work towards getting you small snippets of each one of the DVDs, so you the parent, can see it for yourself and judge!  I need to do a couple of things at the moment, but will be looking forward to any further responses from you guys!  Thankyou!   smile

Yes! Samples make much more of an impact than product ad.
Also, seeing children enjoying the product means a lot too.  Marketing wise I think that is your biggest seller. I have been sold on so many products after seeing a parent and child enjoying it.

Yes samples allow parents to make well informed choices. Definitely do that. I still think your promo video has merit, it just doesn't answer all the questions.
Also I also think numbers in the comparison chart will help. Along with a few more comparisons. Decide who the biggest DVD early reading companies are and compete to them. I think tweedlewink would need to be included and possible wink to learn. I also think it wouldn't be all bad if one of the other DVDs had at least one number higher than yours because that would reflect as honest salesmanship. Customers like that.
A couple of the kids in your video are quite old. Exactly what ages are you targeting? Just curious  smile

No, I don't think comparison chart is "aggressive"---people do that all the time. It's all natural. The customers have the right to know what there is to it in a product. However, just do it fairly, at the equivalent product line / suite.

The ultimate judge is indeed children, BUT it is the parents who make the purchase. These parents have limited budget; we know that the average of yearly budget per homeschooled kid is $500. Given that, a $150 purchase is A LOT. So, I don't think many parents would entertain the "complementary" / "supplementary" product approach---they would want one product "to rule them all", so to speak. Moreover, they want this big purchase to be a big hit, at least for their kids. Given the many success stories of the older products like YBCR, Preschool Prep, or Hooked on Phonics, you must make SURE that parents would award you their $150 of the available $500 by persuasively arguing that your product is at least on par or even much better than the existing products. So, comparison chart is definitely a good way, not aggression, in my opinion. It's just the issue of language, see if you can word it better. And certainly free 5-10 min snippets on Youtube---nothing could persuade parents and kids more than these snippets. I would rather have the snippets available NOW so that parents and kids could sample them. The snippets simply speak volumes.

Here's some ideas:
1. Another video you want to make is testimony video---success stories, footage showing kids enjoying your package, even interviews with kids/parents or 2-3 y.o. kids demonstrating their ability to read using your product. This bolster your claim that kids love your product and are successful. (No, promo video is rather poor on this, by the way.) Make it one short version and one long version. The short version is perhaps 10 min, the long version is, say, 30 or 40 min. Put both in Youtube, or, if you have the money, buy the late night ad slots for the long one (like YBCR and HOP used to).

2. Free trial promo --- 90-day 100% money back guarantee (less shipping)

3. Free fully functional demo DVDs---maybe give away the first disk of level 1?

4. Discounts, either direct or through Groupon, Zulily, Homeschool Co-Op, etc.

Thanks Mandabplus3 and robbyjo,

Just wanted to let you know that I'm working on putting a video together that has snippets of EACH one of the 9 DVDs ... once this video is viewed, you will guys will be able to picture the entire system and get a much better understanding of it -  then you will be able to picture exactly HOW all those things are taught - see http://www.littlechampionreader.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1831.  Hopefully, that will take care of any doubts you may have.

Couple of thing I wanted to mention:

1.  The comparison is strictly based on DVD-reading systems, NOT software systems.  Note that the potential for learning through a software-based system such as brillkids is UNLIMITED because there is no limit to the amount of words, phrases, sentences that can be taught through it (because you can input just about anything).  Ideally, children can be shown (flashed) 1,000 words alone per 5-10 minutes and learn through repetition of those words.  But in reality, it doesn't always work that way because children also often need some form of entertainment (animation) to go along with those words, which is where the DVDs come into play.  There are times when it's just more convenient to leave the DVD on and let the child simply watch it, as opposed to direct interaction through software.  There is a place for both the systems and it depends on what works best for your child in the end = I am sure you guys already know about this.

2.  My comparison chart is based on READING systems alone.  TW is a reading PLUS EK system - I actually recognize it to be more of an EK system as I believe its focus is geared more toward EK plus  math.  It's more of an 'all-encompassing' sort of system and not an exclusive-type of reading system.  I'm looking for DVD-based READING systems.  And I'm comparing the content that's being taught in the DVD itself, as that would be 'hands-off' method of learning (from the parent's point of view).  If something new is being taught through something written, then the parent would have to do the teaching, NOT the DVD.

3.  Note that the LAST 5 points listed in my comparison chart are actually my PRODUCT FEATURES - The other 3 systems have these features in bits and pieces, but their numbers DON'T match up to what I have outlined in the chart - I think THIS POINT is throwing you guys off - as it may leave you wondering that WHY didn't the other systems get atleast one 'check' in one of those last categories?  It's because the NUMBERS didn't match - that's the reason why.  So a better thing would be to (as you guys already suggested) have a number-based system - as that will help you guys visualize and give you more peace of mind (I hope).

4. I am already aware that Preschool Prep teaches the SOUNDS of short and long vowels.  But please realize that here I'm focusing more on the TRADITIONAL PHONICS APPROACH of teaching the short and long vowels.  Just ask any K or 1st grade teacher about this.  When they give their students a lesson about short vowels, they will not simply say to the child, 'learn the sound of the letter 'a' and you will know what 'short a' is.  that's it' - instead, they will ask your child to learn and recognize these words in clusters:
for short vowels:  cat,rat,mat,sat/sit,bit,lit, etc.
for long vowels:  jake,rake,lake, day,may,bay/bike,mike,etc ...
Now, HOP teaches that thoroughly - it teaches both short vowels and long vowels in the traditional phonics approach by dedicating more than one kit for this ... but Preschool prep doesn't do that (believe me, if their 'letters' dvd taught short vowels and long vowels, they WOULD advertise it as teaching 'vowels') - So you tell me ... am i being 'malicious' here?  Actually I'm just being honest.  You the PARENT need to be informed of these things - my job is to inform you that if your child learns these phonetic families beforehand, it will make many things easier for them later on.  Anyhow, it's up to you how to interpret this.  I would like more OBJECTIVE views and less subjective ones.  Please back up what you say with FACTS ---  many of your suggestions have been helpful, but please don't assume something about *why* I am setting up something a certain way without a discussion with me.  I think my main folly was not comparing the whole 'preschool prep' series and instead focusing on 'meet the sight words' - but honestly speaking, in the end it didn't even make much of a difference in the comparison chart either way - it only made a difference of 2 checks I think;  this is just because of the way the comparison chart is set up (see point 3 above).  I can tell you one thing:  that if I was the parent, I would be very interested in having such a detailed view/list of the exact text contained in each DVD.  but just like you guys, I would also want to view actual DVD snippets (which I promised I'm going to get to soon - hopefully by the end of this week or beginning of next week).

5.  on the subject of testimonials - I would love to have more of those; I have already had my nephews love the system; their parents are telling me that they are learning and repeating their sight words and phrases from the DVDs - plus they love the animated stories and nursery rhymes.  I hope it will do the same for your children.  But once again, let's wait for the snippets so you guys can show your kids and let me know yourself ......

6.  finally, on the subject of returns and discount - These things are not entirely in my hands and not so easy to do.  A LOT has went into creating these 9 DVDs and to even bring this product on the forefront.  Our company is small, a startup.   These things take time - I have taken note of what you guys like, but it will take time.  We need a lot of support from parents, educators, etc.  at the moment, which I don't have a lot of at this time.  My main (only) driving force is the children themselves - I want to see them learn from my system.  I have a special respect for parents who teach their children early education and would like to work with them on a personal level first - but remember that these things take time.  At the moment, however, let me get that video ready for you.  I truly hope you guys will like it as a lot went into creating it - and I hope it will create many successful little readers in the future!
Talk to you guys soon!

I am looking forward seeing the sample! I am hoping to find a product that will teach an advanced vocabulary or grammar to young children as English is our second language. All of the EL dvds(except Memoflix) we have teach the same words  ( which is probably great when focusing only on reading )but as our daughter gets older we are having difficulty find something that would interest her.

Congratulation! There is never enough edu dvds around!

@lelask:  Thankyou!  Yes, we are still working on the demo sample and should have that in the next 1-3 days.

In the meantime, I wanted to show all of you the updated comparison chart.  Note that this chart is now based more on NUMBERS, as per your suggestions.  I agree that this is a BETTER representation - as there are no cross-x given for a low number.  Note that we are still working on the numbers and this will take some time (as the process is quite lengthy and rigorous).

A couple of points first (please feel free to give your feedback on this):

1.  This comparison chart is supposed to serve as a PARENT-RESOURCE that informs you (the parent) about the exact amount of words, phrases, sentences taught in each one of the educational DVDs your child may be watching.  This comparison chart is based on facts and should not be causing problems as such - if 3 different people were to view each of the specified DVDs and make an exact word-by-word list of all the words, phrases, sentences included in that DVD, what would the numbers, the statistics, look like?  To me, that information is very important and valuable.  That's the purpose of this chart.  IMO, you the parent SHOULD know how much each DVD is teaching your child.  And let me tell you, that such statistics are NOT easily available (just try searching yourself).  I must say that Preschool Prep company does a good job of this because they tell you exactly what's included in each DVD.  But YBCR does not openly give you a list of everything included in their DVDs (I'm not saying that's a bad thing; but I do think it would have been useful had they given that list).  Note that there is a lot of research involved in collecting such statistics and if any parent is interested in collaborating with me on this, then PM me.  Or if a parent wants to verify the numbers or get into more detail in general as related to the chart, I would be happy to work with you on that - Please PM me for such inquiries.  I think each DVD should have an exact word-to-word list which any parent can openly refer to - again, this will serve as a resource for you, the parent.  And I must say that I would be extremely surprised if any of you say this is 'unnecessary' (I speak as a parent here who once also showed many educational DVDs to my own son).

2. Now, some people wanted to know if YBCR and Preschool Prep are compatible with Little Champion Reader.  The answer is: absolutely!  The reason for it is this:  YBCR and Preschool Prep and Little Champion Reader each teach a DIFFERENT SET OF WORDS.  For example, Preschool Prep and LCR both teach 'sh'.  But Preschool Prep teaches the words 'shoe, shovel, trash', while LCR teaches 'shell, shy, shed' - so if anything, these systems will definitely *complement* each other by reinforcing the same concepts and building on your child's existing vocabulary;  and it will also benefit your child if they see 'sh' in 2 different DVDs.  Similarly, there is very little overlapping of words between LCR and YBCR.  The ultimate goal is to enrich your child's reading vocabulary as much as possible by helping them recognize and learn hundreds of words.  All 3 of these systems will help you do that - they can definitely work together to increase vocabulary - mainly because each DVD is teaching a different set of words.  Again, I think if you had an exact word-to-word list for each DVD, it would be an indispensable resource for you the parent.

And lastly:  I apologize for not creating this thread myself.  mellow  A friend did it on my behalf, but best would have been to do it myself - especially when I was going to have such detailed discussions with you anyways.  I just didn't anticipate that many of you would have so many questions about it.

And for your information: The demo video will be close to 15 minutes in length and will include snippets from each of the 9 DVDs.  I'm eager to get your feedback on that!  In the meantime, please feel free to give me feedback on the comparison chart or any other thing.  Talk to you soon!   smile

I finally have the Little Champion Reader demos ready for the Brillkids parents here (sorry it took me a while!).
A LOT went into creating this system and I truly hope that you will find these demos useful for your children ( I think I know that it will be more useful than that other 'promo' video!).  smile

Now, I wanted to answer a couple of questions you guys may have, so please note:
LCR IS compatible with YBCR and Preschool Prep; it's because each of these systems teach a different set of words/phrases/sentences.  All these DVDs teach the same concept(s) but do it with a different set of words - so that is the main advantage.  In the end, the more words your child can recognize and read, the greater will be their reading fluency, which is the goal!  smile

Now, some of you had questions and concerns about the price – couple of things:  IMO, for its total content and the amount of words/phrases/sentences these 9 DVDs are teaching, I think that the current price is a bargain (compared with other systems).
HOWEVER, for the first time, only on Brillkids forum, I’m offering a $15 discount with coupon code LCR15, which can be used at www.littlechampionreader.com
(please note that coupon code is valid only until OCTOBER 31).
This discount is especially for my brillkids friends here because you guys have given me valuable and honest input about many things related to my product.
I truly appreciate this and I hope that this coupon will be helpful to many of the parents here!

Now, a couple of notes regarding the demo videos:

1.  the ‘200+ high-frequency phrases’ were extracted directly from Rasinski’s book The Fluent Reader.

2. the ‘Whole Language’ 3-DVDs are the same as YBCR, except LCR advances to phrases (dvd2) and sentences (dvd3).

3. for exact list of words/phrases/sentences, refer to:  http://www.littlechampionreader.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1831

You may notice that each of the 9 DVDs has a different animation style than the other.  This was done on purpose in order to make it more engaging for children.  We think that children will prefer different DVDs at different times, as children’s preferences change with time – thus the variety in animation.

Please note:  This final product is the hard work of many animators, illustrators and educators.  It also involves many children who are personally very dear.  I am open to your feedback, but if your feedback is more on the side of negativity, please PM me.  I hope you guys can relate to what I'm saying!   unsure

Again, I hope that these demos will be helpful to you – please don’t hesitate to ask any questions about the product or the demo video.
I'm looking forward to your feedback!    smile

thank you for the demo! I showed the videos to my two year old son who recently had refuse to look at any educational videos . I guess he is bored from the dvds I own(your baby can read, your child can read, hook on phonic, preschool prep). at first he refuse to watch the demo until he notice that this were different videos from what he is already familiar. He sat with me through the demos and seen to enjoy watching new words and even words that he already new,he especially enjoy the part were the story is been read, he kept saying again, again. he also love the sentences he kept repeating the sentences to his sisters. I Enjoy seeing my son excited about words again. I also show it to my almost 3 month old baby just to see is I get a reaction ,she reacted the most with the songs she kept kicking her legs and moving her arms. I must said  this program looks great and beautifully done.it seems to be perfect for early learning and perfect for continuing your toddler education.

I finally found time to watch them and I think they are wonderful!  yes
You have done a fabulous job. I can see these being perfect for 2 and 3 year olds learning to read and most 4 and 5 year olds would watch them also. They are well suited to babies. The Sightwords are done in a way that keeps them interesting enough for older kids. My boy (5) watched all the demos and didn't wonder off. Apparently he reads much faster than I thought as he was reading the words along with the presenter many times ( I really should stop underestimating my children one day  rolleyes )
Anyway regardless of the rest of the thread I think you will all want to spend the time checking these out. I can see them sitting very nicely in you early learning DVD collection.   yes

I enjoyed the samples as well.  My gut feeling is that if someone spent all the time and effort to create such an appealing product, its gotta be worth it.  I purchased mine, and I can't wait to receive it.

John

EDIT:  I had a small issue/inquiry regarding being charged tax just before hitting the final button to complete transaction.  I contacted Little Champion Reader via email.  Suprisingly, I received a response within 30 minutes stating that they had resolved the issue with their website and the order would go through properly. Yes, the issue was resolved.  I placed my order Oct 25, and received the package at 12:20 pm on Oct. 29.  That included a weekend.  In other words, the free shipping was not only free, it was also exceedingly fast for being free. Customer service was helpful and courteous.  Package was as stated (looks professional).  I'll update once I've had a chance to see the content of the dvd's, flashcards, books, etc...
P.S.  Product made in China (if anyone had to know).
