76  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Best way to teach baby foreign languages if you only speak one? on: May 15, 2011, 09:51:40 PM
You only speak to your baby in english or are you able to speak some Chinese?

I read you ar using Baby learn chinees (DVD) and LR english and chinese.

At waht age did you start viewing each of this products with your baby?
What is the your recomendation , at what age would you start if you did it again and go back in time?
77  EARLY LEARNING / Prenatal Education / Re: How To Play Music For Baby on: May 15, 2011, 09:44:36 PM
qzee, very nice article. We are glad that my daughter play music to her baby while in the womb.
She did it as a means of relaxation an not thinking that by doing it her baby would be more inteligent.

She use music from different parts of the world and now when she plays it again (she is 2 month old) maybe it is like remebering. Who knows.
nevertheless, as the article says, it will do no harm and bringing good effects to the mom will traduce in more benefits for the baby.
78  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: When did your kids start counting to 10? on: May 15, 2011, 09:38:11 PM

That one looks nice and specially cause it is very colorfull. You can use it to teach numbers and colors, thanks PY.
79  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Swimming Lessons for Babies. When did you start? on: May 15, 2011, 09:35:38 PM
Thanks Kimba, i find the 'bonding' result as an extra benefit of starting swiming clases.

I would be interested to see how you go with learning the Rosetta Stone!

I have just re-started learning with Mandarin because 3 years ago i did the first 5 lessons but then i quit. Now i am planning to teach my granddaughter so i think it will be much better if a understand or may pronounce some things. Beisdes Rosetta, i will follow Brillkids chinese curriculum and learn at the same time wiht her.

Wouyld you recomend to go for simplified or traditional Chinese. I suppose that in the image i attached we have the last written quote in traditional. Is it right?

82  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Swimming Lessons for Babies. When did you start? on: May 15, 2011, 03:39:26 AM
I was wandering when would be the ideal age to start with swimming clases with your babies.

I read an interesting article of brillkids.
These 2 questions and answers called my attention:

What is the best age to start swimming lessons?
EL: When it comes to using a swimming pool, I recommend waiting until after the baby’s first set of immunizations, at the age of two months.

Up to what age do babies automatically hold their breath underwater?
NA: Until about 6 months [the mammalian dive reflex will stop water from getting into a baby’s lungs]. But even after that age, a baby will not try to breathe once she is under the water. So you just have to get your baby to hold her breath as she is about to go under. To do this, blow on her face hard, right before putting her under.

So according to this if the climate is ok and your baby is not sick, you can take swimming classes starting best between 2 and 6 month old?
That is why i would like to know if you took swimming classes with your babies
a) at what age did you started
b) would you recomend it? Why or why not.
83  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Chinese Curriculum is only download or physical product comes with it on: May 15, 2011, 03:07:37 AM
I need help with 2 topics:

First:
I am planning to get the NEW LR Deluxe that comes with all the extra material that will help in teaching LR.

Since i will also buy Chinese Curriculum, i would like to know if it comes with some physical material (Lesson Planners).

If this is the case, I would like both to be shipped together to avoid paying extra.

second:

I do not know much about Mandarin. Which one will be better the simplified or traditional characters? What is the difference.

I see in Rosetta that there are 3 options of 'words' as shown on the image attached.

One is the one i understand the most. Is this what is called 'pinyin' ?
Are the other 2: simplified and traditional? I do not see too much difference between these two.

have no idea of Chinese

85  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: pls recommend French & Japanese DVD on: May 15, 2011, 01:45:05 AM
Graceho,

As lzp11 comment there are some products that are definitely a disappointment but it is also true that other products that seem good for the parent may not be the same for the child.

I have Muzzy which i like very much specially because it came with the 5 languages: english, spanish, french, italian and german. But unfortunately my grandson did not like it too much and only ask for the spanish version which was not my intention since we are a spanish speaking family. Maybe a little older (he is 4 now) he would change his mind and accept other languages.

On the other hand i bought French is Fun from amazon uk after reading a review in this forum. He likes it very much. Such is the case that once his father ask me 'what is he leraning that he kept singing: 'parlez moi, parlez moi, parlez moi de ta famile, di moi, di moi, di moi  C'est qui, Cest qui C'est qui. That song about family and serge the monkey sleeping while the parrot talk and talk to him, are his favorites.

If you can afford it i would get both and if i have to decide, i would pick French is Fun even though it is not all french.

Good luck.
86  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Why I Avoid Classical Piano Training for My Daughter (+ Little Musician Update) on: May 15, 2011, 12:55:11 AM
Very interesting your comments KL and I agree with most of them. Basically with the issue that between learning only to read notes or only solfege, I prefer the last one.

Let me tell you a little bit of my music story. When a child I enjoy listening to my father playing music in his chromatic accordion. I never saw him read a page of music but he play by ear. Later on he changed the accordion for a keyboard but almost till the end of his days (at 84 yrs old) he delighted us with his beautiful music.
Being the 5th of his children, I was the only one incline to music and started learning at school at age of 12 with a piano accordion (chromatic was not too much use any more). I am an example of learning the ‘classical’ way and even know (almost 45 years later) I have to look for my ‘partitures’ to play something. It is very difficult for me to play by ear; I do not have that ability.

My oldest son learned to play the keyboard at the age of 10 for only 2 years. Even though he was taught also ‘reading’ notes he definitely show from the beginning that he inherited my fathers ability and could play a song even without reading the notes.

My grandson, his son, has not started music lessons yet but since he was 3 years old he likes sitting in front of the keyboard and playing something he called was his ‘invention’. Who knows if we have a future composer in the house. Luckily he is also more like his and my father in that they can repeat a song after listening once and not like me. …..It seems to be a masculine trait and not a feminine one? …. Just joking…

Certainly I agree in the fact that it is good if you have music ability but solfege is something that can be acquired or taught just as reading and the earlier the better.

Looking forward to know more about Little Musician and seeing it soon.

Maybe this is out of the thread but which abacus did you bought.?

I was going to buy one form amazon and read the reviews of that particular abacus and there were not good.
89  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: When did your kids start counting to 10? on: May 03, 2011, 04:11:09 PM
I think that is one of the great benefits of sharing experiences. It is not that the same if you read a book or information on the developement of babies or kids at different stages as hearing from parents all over the world. Especially those that have early education as a common goal. I do not see it like a competition or anything lik that because we have to realize that not all kids (or persons) have the same abilities but it is good to be aware that some are expose to different situations or stimulus that allow them to 'learn' at an early age. Before this forum i was not consious of the benefits of counting backwards just the same as walking backwards or jumping in one foot etc (not limited to math activities).
My grandson is 4 yrs old and he surprise me the othe day going down the stairs skipping one level and counting by 2's. I like that so we are going to do it as a game. We do not have to feel bad listening to other accomplishment but be glad to have the opportunity of doing something similar with our next baby (my grandaughter in my case).
Remember it is a game for kids and we have to learn when to stop and switch to other forms of play.
90  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Wesley Playing Hot Cross Buns on the Violin on: May 02, 2011, 09:27:32 PM
I saw his video and really think how lucky you are to have such a great kid. You should be very proud of him.
Keep working, music is great.
Congrats Wesley and proud Mom.
