We were using a program called Sterling math facts. It is a flashcard program where you can either choose fact families to add to each profile or add facts individually. Unfortunately, they are not selling it anymore, I am sure there are other similar programs out there, or you could just use paper flashcards and introduce each one as they come across it in the books.

When do you guys think the phrase book will be incorporated into little reader? My kids have done the French curriculum a few times (we do it as a warm up along with little musician in the morning). They'd really enjoy expanding into the phrases.

Thanks John. I am very lucky in that all my kids seem to really take pleasure in learning.
4  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Update on my 6 year old on: April 07, 2016, 01:10:06 AM
Our current plan is to put them in Community college once they finish what I would consider "high school" course work. My eldest age 9 is currently in Algebra 1/2, high school biology, and doing a high school writing program in addition to writing a historical novel. He also does programming on his own. I am waiting for him to complete math through Calculus and then I will have him do Calculus in community college (I think it will be a good first course as he should have good success having already had the course at home).  I will probably put him in at age 13.
5  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Update on my 6 year old on: April 03, 2016, 03:01:47 AM
So I would say it partially depends on her ability right now. With my kids we would start Kumon workbooks (my book of numbers 0-30, my book of simple addition,  my book of addition...) at age 2. We then would move onto Singapore EarlyBird at age 3. If she can write the numbers I would probably move her straight to Singapore at this point. We used the teacher's manual, the textbook and the workbook. The way you do it is you look in the teachers book for the days lesson and it sometimes has some things to demonstrate or talk about and then you look in the assigned pages of the text book followed by the workbook. It is quite quick and sometimes Mason would ask to do multiple lessons. If your child is pretty mathy you could probably get by without the parents book in the Earlybird lessons, but I liked how it showed how to teach ways to really understand the numbers which helps with mental manipulation.  Also the text provides additional problems. Most of the early concepts don't require more practice than would be given with the text/workbooks. But they do have a book of additional problems if you need more practice or challenging problems. As they introduced problems/fact families we would add them on to our daily fact review on the computer and he would do that as a warmup every day (and still does).

TaylorSummer, how old is your child and what are you doing right now?
7  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Update on my 6 year old on: April 02, 2016, 03:11:02 AM
It has been a while since I updated on my now 6 year old. He recently started on Saxon 6/5. I am so impressed by his mental math skills. He is able to do 2 and 3 digit division problems with remainders in his head. I put some videos of his math skills as well as updated some of the other things he is doing on my blog (such as French, writing and cursive).

He is currently working at about a 5th grade level.

Thanks Lappy that answers my question.
9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: When did you start teaching your baby to read? on: March 27, 2016, 11:03:17 PM
We used the "How Smart is Your Baby" book for initial ideas. So we started with those black and white cards at birth. We moved on to word type cards and Little reader at around 4 months. Around one we started adding in a bunch of other programs as well. This kind of summarizes what we did:

http://rogueed.blogspot.com/2016/03/reading-progression-from-ages-1-3-in.html

I have a new little one who is 10 months now and it is hard to remember everything we did and in what order with the older ones. I'm glad that we at least did videos so I can remember where we were on the journey at different times.

It would be great if after a certain number of years you got an additional ability to move your license to account for the normal need to upgrade to a new computer? I have been using Little reader/math/musician/French since the beginning (was even an original Beta tester) and want to continue to use it for our new baby, but am worried that with normal computer upgrades we will not be able to use it through all our kids.
11  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Blog update on: March 27, 2016, 12:44:48 AM
I just wanted to share my recent blog posts with any of you who might be interested. As many of you know, I've done EL with all of my children with amazing results.

Such that my 9 year old is working through a high school Algebra book, doing high biology on his own with a textbook and chemistry through Khan academy, reading intermediate level French, and writing at a high school level (in content if not neatness  Wink ).

My 6 year old is doing 5th grade math, writing at about the same level, reading/speaking high level beginner French and also working though high school biology.

My blog is mainly focused on my 10 month old and starting her program from the beginning, although I am happy to include posts on my older kids if people have specific questions. She has been walking for about 2 months, can hang from a pull up bar for over 30 seconds, and is working on being completely toilet trained. In fact that is the most recent blog topic. Anyway the blog is just a way to document this journey as well as to be able to look back for my self or for others that want to attempt something similar and see the steps we followed.

12  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Looking for Second Hand Bits of Intelligence and/or Reading Cards! :) on: July 04, 2015, 01:00:41 AM
Hi Jacque!

If you don't mind making your own cards you can go to:
http://library.brillkids.com/library.php?cid=&criteria=POI
There was a group of us a few years ago who were making cards with the Programs of intelligence on the back. the files are uploaded here on brillkids at the link above. Anything that ends with POI was probably made by that group. You can print them out and attach them to poster board. IAHP sells the 11 by 11 in packs of 100 if you want to go that route. I usually laminate after I make them, to keep them from getting damaged.

Kerileanne, I know what you mean. 5 years is a long time, my next oldest is almost exactly the same age as yours. I find it harder to remember what we did than I'd imagine. So I am very thankful for the records I did keep. Is your 5 year old in school or at home?
14  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Our newest early learner on: June 23, 2015, 04:48:27 PM
Aww thanks, we think she's beautiful too. I'd love if you'd post a list of the other early learning blogs you follow. I look at dad dudes, poker cub, domanmom, professional parenting from parents on this forum, but I always appreciate more inspiration.
15  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Our newest early learner on: June 23, 2015, 04:17:57 AM
Many of you may know me from previous posts documenting our early learning progress with my older 2 boys (9 year old working at 8th grade level and 5 year old working at third grade level). We now have a new little girl who was born June 15 th. I tried hard to document with my older 2 but would like to be more consistent with this one. I had the idea to start a blog as a way of documenting the journey this time as a kind of scrapbook and to help connect with other families. So here is the blog (it only has a few entries thus far) rogueed.blogspot.com I'm hoping by sharing it here it will keep me accountable Wink
