31 BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Middle School Student Aces SATs By ABC News on: July 24, 2013, 12:52:17 AM

Middle School Student Aces SATs
By ABC News | ABC News Blogs – 3 hours ago

Vivek Jain woke up his 14-year-old son, Varun, one early morning in early July. "Varun, you got a perfect score on your SATs," the father said.

The sleepy teenager simply said "Wow," and fell back asleep.

"If anybody in the United States can get a perfect score in middle school, it has to be Varun," his father told ABC News.

In an indication of how rare it is to get a perfect 2400 score on the trio of tests that make up the SATs, only 360 students did it in 2012. More than 1.6 million students took the tests that year.

And those students were in high school. Jain, who will be a high school freshman this fall, was in eighth grade when he took the tests.

Jain did not stress over the test. His father reminded him the night before that he was to take the exam the following morning. Only then did he start preparing for the math, writing and critical thinking segments.

Just a few days before the SAT was administered, Jain took the AP Calculus BC exam, a course usually offered to the most mathematically advanced high school seniors. Jain took the course online in a month.

He is also the highest scoring point guard for his school. He plays the sitar and the violin. He has trophies for chess and debate. He won a scholarship from John's Hopkins University to take classes at a community college. He goes to the movies and plays video games with friends.

"I tell him, 'Varun, this is a gift for you,'" Vivek Jain said. "He realizes that because we have seen quite a few geniuses here and there, but they only have a gift for one thing. Varun has an ability that is so well rounded."

Varun Jain hopes to use his talent in the computer science field. His father says he wants to do "something technology related that improves peace in the world and makes everyone thrive."

He is expected to graduate early and then move on to one of his top choices for colleges, either Harvard or MIT.

What is the status of the Arabic curriculum, please? And who is reviewing the translations for grammatical correctness? How can I beta test it, please?

ASA everyone!

Does anyone know the status of the LR Arabic curriculum?

35 BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: translating LR lesson into another language on: July 15, 2013, 01:32:58 PM
Hi everyone!

As I am studying Arabic, I am having a challenge learning the verb conjugations for each tense, and want to use LR to help me with, as well as a teaching tool for the girls.

How can I convert the English curriculum to Arabic? Am I understanding that I can 'clone'/copy it and then change it to the language I want?

According to this, "By creating your own course, you can simply take Categories that you like, and have them auto-generated into a day-by-day curriculum without having to plan out what is shown every day.":

What is the schedule used to generate the 'day-by-day curriculum'?

And I remember that a LR Arabic edition was in progress, but was it completed? How can I obtain a listing of the verbs used in the English curriculum, please, in order to convert them to the various conjugations in Arabic? And I also want to compare the verb list to a list of the most common Arabic verbs that I found. And is there a noun and adjective list for the LR curricullum, please?

Last, but not least, how can I type in Arabic within LR? It currently only lets me type in English, even if I choose Arabic from the Windows language toolbar?

36 EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Doman vs. Montessori on: June 28, 2013, 11:11:31 PM
Good Evening Everyone,

Does anyone know the teaching principles/philosophy that Doman is actually based on? I am going to write a research paper comparing Doman to Montessori, that I am currently in training for ages 3 - 6.

Thank you!

37 BrillKids Software / Tech Support / LR files missing? | Re: LR locked up! on: May 31, 2013, 12:53:42 AM
Good Evening!

I am attempting to use LR again, but the files seem to be missing from the last time it was re-installed via Team Viewer, on the Admin user side, instead of my actual name user side? It seems to be a trial version, instead of the full version and I cannot locate my Noorani curriculuum I put together over 18 months, a few years ago?!?! confused

I need to get this to work again, because I will use the Noorani program with Doman method/schedule via LR to teach in classrooms for pre-school children.

Please help!

Thank you!

as salaamu 'alaikum,

Ezzayyukum? This is Ayesha Nicole, in America. I am trying to learn the Egyptian Colloquial dialect to help my children speak 'ameeyah, yet need some help, please. My husband is very busy and not at home a lot, so I end up speaking with a very broken ECA/MSA (fusHaah) and then using English. I have many books for ECA but the content is more for tourism in Egypt or business, and not for parent/child conversations, such as "brush your teeth", etc.

I found this English frequency list and need the equivalent for ECA and MSA:

I like the way this vocabulary list is set up with ECA/MSA:

Would you please help me to learn how to speak in ECA with my two girls?

Baraaka Allahu feekum.

40 EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / News: Kindergartner Becomes Mensa Member on: April 26, 2013, 01:46:06 PM
Kindergartner Becomes Mensa Member
By Gillian Mohney | ABC News Blogs – 2 hours 51 minutes ago

Most parents believe their child is the smartest kid in the class, but when Robert Dorman says this, he's likely right.

His son, 5-year-old Gus Dorman, with an IQ of 147, became one of the youngest members admitted to Mensa, the exclusive high IQ society.

Now in kindergarten, Gus is already reading such books as "Charlotte's Web," while his classmates work on mastering the ABCs.

For fun, Gus memorizes the periodic table and a world map. And sometimes he corrects his father on geography.

"He got into an argument with me because I told him that the capital of Alaska is Anchorage," said Dorman. "But it's not, it's Juneau."

Dorman first noticed Gus' advanced intelligence when he started to potty train his son at 18-months. Gus started to bring a newspaper to read on the toilet, and was also reading his father's copies of "Wired" magazine.

Since Gus was their first child, Dorman and his wife, Kotomi, simply thought this was how all children acted.

"We didn't realize he was gifted," said Dorman. "We just thought he was like all kids."

On a camping trip with another family, Gus read the slogan off a fellow camper's clothing. The family friend was stunned that at age 4 Gus could read, even though her 5-year-old daughter was still learning the alphabet.

"She said, 'He can read?' He shouldn't be able to read," recalled Dorman of the family friend's reaction. "I said, 'He reads all the time. We brought books [on the trip.]'"

Dorman decided it was time to take his son to get an IQ test, hoping that he might qualify for an out-of-state gifted program.

Gus scored within the 99 th percentile in nearly all categories of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, which qualified him for Mensa, whose members must have an IQ of at least 135; Gus' IQ was 12 points higher than that.

Despite Gus' high IQ, his father said his son had problems when he started school. Gus would get restless when it came to learning addition or the alphabet. According to Dorman, Gus was already on multiplication and long division.

"He goes to kindergarten, and he likes going to school [but] he gets in trouble," said Dorman. "He really has a hard time sitting there and listening to low-concept stories, because he's used to being able to ask questions and do research."

Dorman has lobbied his school district to provide special advanced education for his son. But Dorman said it's unlikely Gus would receive special treatment.

"I know there's no money for gifted programs in Illinois," he said.

Dorman hopes that Gus will at least qualify for a school for the gifted that provides supplemental online courses through the eighth grade.

"As parents we're lost," said Dorman of Gus' school options. "I don't think homeschooling is the way to go. He needs the camaraderie in the social portion of school. The books are one thing, but you have to have the social part too."

For now Dorman said he's happy to teach his son what he can about Gus' newest interests, black holes and astrophysics.

I want to teach chess to the children, although I will have to also learn with them. I recently purchased "No Stress Chess", that others have mentioned on the forums, along with a newer book for parents:

and this book and board game set makes learning fun for the children with simple explanations:

And then I came across an interview with Magnus Carlsen, that is quite impressive!:

I also found Montessori based teaching methods:

And how adorable is he!?!?:

I also ordered their book for teaching toddlers chess and am eagerly reading through it:

Teen builds a wooden bike from one sheet of plywood

3 hrs ago, Odd News Videos

15-year-old Collin Graver was bored with his physics homework [from homeschool] and ended up building a 65-pound bike out of a single sheet of plywood. With a material cost of just $20, the Avondale Estates, Georgia teen used his talents to construct the working wooden bike in his father's basement workshop. While the bike is rigid and has no brakes, Graver says, "The point is, it's cool."
