If I explain it, it won't make any sense, because you have to first read the Doman book.

63  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Article > Prodigy earns University of Chicago medical degree at 21 on: June 05, 2012, 10:26:36 PM
Here is some information about him:

Sho Yano is an Asian-American child prodigy with an estimated IQ of 200. His father is from Japan and his mother from South Korea. Yano was reading at two, writing at three, playing piano at four, and composing at five. Yano graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago when he was 12 and earned a PhD from the University of Chicago in molecular genetics and cell biology when he was 18, the youngest ever to earn a PhD there. He is currently in medical school working on an MD. Yano’s mom decided to homeschool her son after realizing how much more advanced he was than the other students at his school and how much more seriously he took his academic work. Mrs. Yano has written several books in Korean on homeschooling and homeschools Sho’s little sister, Sayuri, an academic and musical prodigy in her own right. Sayuri recently finished her bachelors degree in biology at Roosevelt University. She’s 13.

Wow!

Prodigy earns University of Chicago medical degree at 21

By Ron Recinto | The Lookout – 6 hrs ago

Sho Yano can now add a historic academic claim to his long list of accomplishments.

At 21, Yano is the youngest student to earn a medical degree from the University of Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reports.

That feat should come as no surprise to those familiar with his story.

Yano was reading at age 2, writing by 3 and composing music by his fifth birthday, according the Tribune story.  He entered Loyola University in Chicago at age 9 and graduated summa cum laude in three years.

At age 12, he enrolled in the University of Chicago's  prestigious Pritzker School of Medicine, where students earn both a Ph.D. and a medical degree, according to the Tribune.

"I came to college to study, not to hang out or date," he said in 2000 when he entered Loyola, WLS-TV in Chicago reported. Yano told the television station that he did face some discrimination for being a very young university student.

"I ran into things like people shouting 'go back to elementary school' on campus," Yano told WLS-TV.

The Tribune story also pointed out that several medical schools passed on him because of maturity questions. On campus, he was a target for wisecracks, the Tribune reported, with some classmates questioning whether his mother was pushing him into college too early.

"I never understood that," Yano said in the Tribune piece. "Why would being allowed to challenge yourself be considered more damaging than being totally bored?"

The newspaper called  Pritzker's decision to admit Yano a success, also revealing that he hopes his graduation quiets those who said he'd be stunted socially and emotionally for daring to tackle an accelerated track.

He's also inspired his sister, Sayuri. At 15, she is at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore studying violin performance, the newspaper reported.

Sho Yano's next challenge is an upcoming residency in pediatric neurology, which is expected to take five years, according to the Tribune.

But with Sho Yano, you never know. He could finish sooner than that.

Music to Help Children Learn a New Language: 10 Minutes at a Time

Music plays an important role in learning a second language. Similar areas of the brain are activated when listening to or playing music and speaking or processing language. Language and music are both associated with emotions, the combination makes it a powerful way to learn a second language.

Why is music so helpful to learn a second language?

Songs are fun

We know that children, especially small children, really like music. They relate to it as entertainment and find learning vocabulary through songs amusing. Songs associated with hand and arm gestures are even more powerful in engaging children.

Songs increase retention

Most of us are able to remember several children’s songs we learned as kids. Music helps us retain words and expressions much more effectively. The rhythm of the music helps with memorization, as do the repetitive patterns within the song.

Songs place vocabulary in context

A song is also a little story. Children learn new words and expressions in the context of a story within the song. This will more easily captivate the attention of kids learning a new language. Words make sense faster when you learn them in the context of the lyrics in the song than when you learn them by themselves.

Below are 7 tips to help children learn another language with music, 10 minutes at a time:

Tip #1: Sing while nursing/giving the bottle

With both Elena and Pablo, before they turned 1, I used to give the last bottle of the day around 11pm. I made it a habit to sing every time, both to relax them, get them to sleep, and have them hear French songs.

Tip #2: Finish the bedtime story with a song

For about a year, I used to sing the same songs to Pablo in French at bedtime (“Un crocodile”, “Dans la maison un grand cerf”, “Dans la foret lointaine”). He was under two years old and he knew the lyrics by heart.

Tip #3: Play tag with a song

We like “Aline”, a French hit from the 60s that has very clear lyrics. We would play “tag” with it: during the refrain, the kids had to leave “base” and I would chase them in the living room. The kids would ask to play the game almost every evening (and they knew the lyrics really well!).

Tip #4: Role play with a song

There is a great Spanish song Cristina used frequently with the kids: “Hola Don Pepito, hola Don Jose”. It is a short dialogue between 2 characters, with simple lyrics. The music is engaging and made both Elena and Pablo want to sing with Cristina back-and-forth. Cristina and the kids would take turns and role playing one of the 2 characters.

Tip #5: Dance and learn

YouTube has great videos of songs where you can dance. Elena and Pablo learned the alphabet in French with Chantal Goya’s “L’Alphabet en chantant”. It is a fun song where you have to mimic the letters with your hands and arms. They learned the alphabet in French much faster than me trying to teach them.

Tip #6: Sing together in the car

Make a routine out of a specific car ride: going to school, coming back from school, going to the park, getting groceries, etc. You can listen to your favorite songs in the target language during one of the car rides as well. This is why Elena and Pablo know the lyrics of “Les Champs Elysees” from Joe Dassin by heart.

Tip #7: Family karaoke

We learn Chinese as a family. We LOVE “Tian mi mi” of Teresa Teng. We found a YouTube video with “Tian mi mi” lyrics on the bottom of the screen. Everyone in the family can sing the song now. Singing it in our Chinese neighborhood restaurant even got us free desserts.

What other ways do you use music to teach your kids a second language? Please share them with us!

Certainly.

I was informed by a member of the yahoo group, that the book download is more for adults, and another book I want to get (below) is more for children:

http://www.atm.org.uk/shop/products/act053.html>http://www.atm.org.uk/shop/products/act053.html

However, the shipping from the UK to America for this publication, is ridiculous, and I emailed the publisher, asking how can I purchase the book as a .pdf/download.  I hope they will make it available soon!

And I also have the set of books from http://www.nurtureminds.com/

Wow!

Girl, 6, is youngest ever in National Spelling Bee

By JOSEPH WHITE | Associated Press

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — The youngest person ever to qualify for the National Spelling Bee was running around in a stream with a friend, hunting for rocks. Suddenly, she came charging up the bank and headed straight for her mother.

"Hold on to that basalt," Lori Anne Madison said in a bossy 6-year-old's voice, "and do not drop it."

"Go away," her mother, Sorina Madison, said playfully.

She talks at 100 mph. In the last few weeks, she has won major awards in both swimming and math, but one accomplishment above all has made her an overnight national celebrity: This week, the precocious girl from Lake Ridge, Va., will be onstage with youngsters more than twice her age and twice her size as one of 278 spellers who have qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

"She's like a teenager in a 6-year-old body," Sorina said. "Her brain, she understands things way ahead of her age."

It's hard to argue with that, especially after spending a couple of hours with Lori Anne and her friends as they splashed in the waters on a sunny day at the Scotts Run Nature Preserve in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

"Oh my gosh, what is it? A water worm. A water worm! It's alive," said Lori Anne, her shoes soaked from more than an hour of exploring. "I need it in my collection. It's wonderful."

There's been no need for Lori Anne's parents to push her to do anything — because she's already way out in front dragging them along. Some kids are ahead of the curve physically, mentally or socially from a very young age. Lori Anne is the rare exception who defies the norms in every category.

She hit all her milestones early, walking and talking well before others in her play group. She was reading before she was 2. She swims four times a week, keeping pace with 10-year-old boys, and wants to be in the Olympics. When her mother tried to enroll her in a private school for the gifted, the headmaster said Lori Anne was just way too smart to accommodate and needed to be home-schooled.

"Once she started reading, that's when people started looking strange at us, in libraries, everywhere, she's actually fluently reading at 2, and at 2 ½ she was reading chapter books," Sorina said.

That meant an unexpected lifestyle change for the mother, a college professor who teaches health-related courses. Lori Anne now studies at home, mastering topics other kids her age won't touch for several years. She wants to be an astrobiologist — a combination of her two favorite subjects, astronomy and biology.

And she speaks so fast, with well-formed diction and a touch of know-it-all confidence — just like a teenager.

"She out-argues both of us, and my husband is a trial lawyer," Sorina said with a laugh.

Now there's another wrinkle: spelling bee fame. When Lori Anne spelled "vaquero" to win the regional bee in Prince William County in March, she set a new standard for youth in the national bee's 87-year history.

"It was shocking," Sorina said. "I didn't expect all the media attention. We're private people. We're regular people. It was intimidating. But I'm happy for her. She loves it and she does it because it's a passion, and we never push her into anything and want her to make her own choices."

Interviews can be boring for a 6-year-old, especially if it's a television setting where she has to sit and sit and sit, so she pulled the plug, telling her mother: "I want to go back to being a kid and playing with my friends."

So a detente was reached. Lori Anne was more than happy to let a reporter and photographer from The Associated Press tag along at a picnic with other gifted home-schooled children, but she craftily steered any questions about spelling back toward the joint pursuit of snails, slugs, tadpoles, water striders, baby snakes and other slimy things in the creek.

On all the attention she's getting: "I asked for no interviews, but the media seems to be disobeying me, and that's why we're looking for snails and water slugs right now."

On why she wants to be an astrobiologist: "I'm going to sort of find life forms. And, plus, alien planets are new. But I need some slugs."

Asked to spell her favorite word, she raced through the letters of "sprachgefuhl" like a blur. Asked to spell it backward, she paused a bit and had to take her time, but she got it right.

"It's even crazier backwards than it is forwards," she said with a giggle, her hand holding a collection jar and her eyes focused on the wet rocks.

"Now let's look for some slugs or snails."

By now, the jar contained a diversity of small living things, with the help of Lori Anne's friends. The children in the group are also smart and accomplished — there's a boy who has been studying calculus at age 8 — but there's something noteworthy about being in the bee.

"Are you that girl who won the spelling bee?" one boy asked.

"That's me," Lori Anne said.

The bee doesn't have a lower age limit, but no one younger than 8 had ever previously qualified for the nationals. Spellers can compete until they're 15, or until they've completed eighth grade.

No one is expecting Lori Anne to win the national bee this year. Just being there is a unique accomplishment, and making it beyond the preliminaries on Tuesday and Wednesday would be another stunning development. The veteran spellers have honed sophisticated study methods, spending hours daily over many months in their attempts to master as much of the unabridged dictionary as possible.

Lori Anne? She likes to study while jumping on her trampoline, with her mother calling out words.

"She doesn't sit at a table for hours to study anything. I mean, she's 6," Sorina said with laugh. "She's still a 6-year-old and we want to allow her to be a 6-year-old."

But, at this pace, she'll be a spelling bee force for years to come, one of those youngsters who becomes a familiar face on the annual ESPN broadcasts.

Asked how she thinks she'll do this year, Lori Anne simply answered "great" and kept on hunting.

There was one question she was more than happy to answer: How does she win all those arguments with her parents?

"I argue and argue and argue," she said, "until their brain is spinning."

Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa Rahmatullah

Fee Qalbee’s quarterly blogging schedule includes a weekly Sunday post categorised as: World of Hifdh.

This week, I am so excited and blessed to introduce my readers to a fantastic publication:

A Qur’aanic Odyssey is a recently published hifdh-based novel written by one of my hifdh students, Umm Muhemmed.

This is a unique publication and an invaluable contribution to the World of Hifdh: it promises to inspire, uplift and enrich your experience as you journey towards the noble spiritual goal of Qur’aanic memorisation.

QuranClub recently interviewed the author about her book, what inspired this publication and the primary messages that can be learnt from her book. Read more here. [ http://www.quranclub.net/2012/04/quraanic-odyssey.html ]

‘A Qur’aanic Odyssey’ is a novel which comes highly recommended from Fee Qalbee Tahfeedhul Qur’aan. Essential for every home & heart!

Stay Inspired!

Rayhaanah
