6  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Self Employment- Hosting Early Learning Workshops on: October 07, 2010, 03:17:28 AM
To be honest I have been trying to think of ways to do something along the lines of what you are saying... I was thinking more of a bi weekly play class where the materials are organized and set for working parents....

I have noticed that stay at home moms that dont teach now are somewhat leary and think your a freak a lot of the times when you get into early learning... the working mothers what to do more and dont find the time... hence I was thinking of targeting the latter...

8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Doubts on the flashing programs? on: October 07, 2010, 02:55:04 AM
Im a strong believer in combining phonics with sight words.... Sight words alone did not work for my son.  He recognizes the words we went through as a baby (hes now 4) ... however if we didnt go over a word he cant just figure it out... he currently can read simple dick and jane books...

Chin up.  Make learning fun and keep doing what feels right and fun.  Drilling doesnt sound fun.  The word turned me off right away Wink  Play and learn together.  Your efforts show that a learning environment is special to your family.  That will be the biggest play in having your child learn.  There are many different ways of learning and teaching... everyone is unique and your teaching style may have to be adapted for eah child.

Sooner or later you will see the beautiful sculpted individual that your are helping to mold and trust me theres not a doubt in my mind that one day you will be convienced she is the smartest kid in the world  yes

Keep smiling

9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: new to the program. 15 month old not interested in reading - help! on: October 07, 2010, 01:46:54 AM
Put the computer away but use the curriculum in a different way....

For example:

Lets say you have a list of 5 words for the day head, eye, point etc.

You could use a different scenerio...

1.  Write the words out on sturdy cardboard... sing a song... hold up the word point.  then sing... POINT, POINT, POINT to your head POINT POINT POINT to your HEAD>.. and give your child a chance to hold the cards and repeat the song... they often have the opportunity to hold and see the word.. and are able to be interactive and really hands on.

2.  If you have a sandbox build some "castles" and casually spell out some words in sand along with play and tell her what they say.

3.  Hide some words in an obstacle course around the house and go on a "Word HUnt"  take really BIG steps, tip toe, march and crawl...

4,  Put word cards on top of a blanket  and turn on the music and shake the blanket with your daughter... when the words fall off go get them and read them together... if you laugh and get silly your child will love it.

My son went through a time where he didnt like the flashcards... and now he loves little reader again... he took a break for over a year.  We just incorporate other activites and squeeze leaning in other ways.   Most important thing is to have fun.
10  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Book and/or learning video suggestion for very inquisitive toddler? on: October 07, 2010, 01:36:04 AM
To explain the body and functions I really like sciencewithme.com
Your child will understand if you explaini it to them.  dont talk down to your child... talk up.  Believe that they understand, follow their interest and take the time to explain the questions... Go to the library and pick  4 or 5 books out on the subject that they are interested in and they will tell you which they enjoy and suits their needs.

My son at the age of 2 could tell you all the bones in his body, at three all the organs and how they work.  Today at 4 he continues to understand and explain to his friends how things in the body work.

Give them the knowledge they crave and dont doubt their ability of absorbtion even if we thinik its to advanced.

cheers and have fun.

Its been a while but I didnt have much success the first time... Excuse me but I am going to try bring this topic to the front again... Call it selfish but I think its a good idea and am hoping for an outcome....
That being said... as of january 11 there will be 3 boys in our famiy... however we would like to still maybe host this summer and vacation somewhere the following summer.  My children have been exposed to spanish, french and chinese to date.  We will not close off any options though.

Thanks

13  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: New On-line Information Center For the Doman Method Programs on: August 14, 2010, 08:27:50 PM
To be honest I am not impressed with the website.  I feel that the general purpose of the non- profit institute is to promote Glen Domans ideas...

I feel that the course information, the books, and the website are all redundant.  I was a member of the past institute forum... where I paid a yearly premimum for very limited resourses and learning materials...

any mother/ father that agrees to the the philosophy will do the program... I find the institute spends too much time trying to recrute new members and repeately pushing the same lectures... The inter exchanges of learning materials are very slim...and there is no need for it.  Digitally the copies can be reposted... after 55 years the return on investment has to have been accomplished from some of the information packages...

It doesnt seem like much to some people however from start to finish what we have spent on learning materials, books, videos, courses, learning materials with the IHAP has totaled close to 8000.00 dolars... We are a middle class family.  That is a lot of money for us.  Quite honestly I found the lectures to be a repeat of the books... While I never completed the graduate program for it would have set us back another 4000.00 and its too much for us.  I did spend a lot on the learning packages and found them often to be vague for the price of them and often dated.

I find that the institutes doesnt take into consideration many of the methods out there and is black and white when it comes to the core beliefs... some things such as the size of the fashcards for encyclopedic knowledge and the insistance that we should be using the reccommended size was silly.... we have trouble storing them and to date after making 1000 flashcards found it was easier to do them on the computer and print them off.  Not once did the institute offer any scientific fact to back up the reccommended size... however if you are insistance on the topic they will say the idea is to have fun...

While I am a inspired by Doman and admire and respect the man I feel the IHAP is dated, redundant, and expensive for the information that is given.  I always feel like something is being pushed onto me from the IHAP and I feel that way after seeing the website also.

Just my 2 cents.
14  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Teaching Skip Counting by 2's on: April 07, 2010, 08:59:32 PM
set up a path with 20 things that are all the same.  Tell a story like.... we are going on an adventure today and need to reach the num. 20 various times... at the end of our destination there we will reach the moon (you can have an astronaust suit or other costume..) Hence you start the adventure through a story we are going up in a rocket all the way to the moon.  There are 20 kilometers on our trip.  THe faster we get there the faster we get the grand prize.. in order to get there num 1 thing has a task to acomplish... as does 2 -3  4.. they suggest skip counting to get to the destination instead.

Thats great.  I was wondering if you have any tips... my 3 year old is currently getting very frustrated when he doesnt get things right and is having a meltdown... how can I help him overcome this when trying difficult tasks like your son in this video?
