My son is very interested nowadays in looking for patterns. He started with simple patterns like ABCABC ..., then developed to complex ones like AABCCCAABCCC, (where A, B & C can stand for colors, shapes, letters, numbers, objects, animals, etc... ) or even combinations of these. Then he started applying the concept to numerics like 1,3,5,7,.... or 11,22,33,.... or even 120,230,340,.... It is an interesting game to try to solve the rule/formula and guess the whole series. For example: The series 3,5,7, ... is based on the formula: 2n+1 where n=1,2,3,... Dear Ayesha & Everyone, Here are two examples for squaring a 2 digits number: Example 1: XY = 64 1) Y Square is 16, so the last digit is 6, and I carry 1. 2) 2 times Y is 8, The result times X, 8x6 = 48, The result 48 +1 (carried in step 1) = 49, so the 2nd digit is 9, and I carry 4. 3) X square is 36, the result 36 + 4 (carried in step 2) = 40, and these are the 1st digits. Square(XY)=4096 Example 2: XY= 97 1) Y Square is 49, so the last digit is 9, and I carry 4. 2) 2 times Y is 14, The result last digit, 4, times X, 4x9 = 36, The result 36 +4 (carried in step 1) = 40, so the 2nd digit is 0, and I carry 4. 3) Y is greater than 5, so X times X+1, 9x10 = 90 , the result 90 + 4 (carried in step 2) = 94, and these are the 1st digits. Dear Spring & Everyone,
To start learning the abacus math, one should be prepared for, at a minimum, basic number counting from 1 to 10 and backward. The earliest recommended age to start the abacus math is normally about 5 years old, but I think that Doman Brillkids can definitely start earlier !!!

Squaring a 2-digit number: XY 1- The last digit (units column): The Last digit of squaring the 2nd digit (Y), Keep the carry1 for step 2. 2- Next digit (tens column) : The last digit of multiplying the 1st digit (X) by the units of (2 x 2nd digit (Y)) and adding the carry1 in step 1, Keep carry2 for step 3. 3- First digit(s): a- If Y is less than 5, Square the 1st digit (X) and add carry2. b- If Y is greater or equal to 5, Multiply the 1st digit (X) by (X+1) and add carry2. People have counted, added and subtracted with an abacus since ancient times. The name comes from the Greek word, abax, meaning "board" or "calculating table", used for doing or teaching arithmetic." Arithmetic includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The abacus can also be used to work with fractions and with finding square and cube roots. The advantages of its use over pencil or pen arithmetic is time . It is faster than writing down the problem and solving it. When working with the abacus one just needs to be accurate.
