you could try putting a soft round ball under the palm + fingers, to sort of makes the fingers 'stand 'on the key in a curve .

4  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Pros and cons of starting violin before 3 years old? on: August 03, 2012, 09:32:15 AM
my daughter started violin when she was 2. Our violin teacher was willing to take her coz' she herself started violin when she was 2.
Pros:
Develop a practice habit,  (as far as she can remember, she has always been playing the violin, practice session at home is like having dinner, natural habit, no arguments , nothing)
Train concentration (when she was 2 we practise 20 minutes daily, , now at 3, she practises half an hour daily)
When she starts to be good at it, she develops interests in violin.
Good teacher is hard to come by, if you find one, and with good time slot , go for it. Otherwise waiting list might take forever.

Cons:
Felt pain in fingers when she starting pressing the strings, need some time to overcome. I guess the earlier you start, the more tender your fingers are, and painful, no matter how gentle you press the strings.
When she can't do something, you always wonder whether you started off too early, is it her ability or she is too young, or she just refuse to do?
Some ppl stare at you like you are some kind of monster parent forcing a child to learn violin at young age.
I hid her violin in a big back pack when she was younger. Now at close to 4 years old, I still get stared at.

Good luck.

5  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How to teach kid to become a confident & outspoken kid? on: June 19, 2012, 05:16:05 AM
I bring her out with me wherever, possible, banks, markets, friends gathering.
In gathering , especially family gathering  , I let her sit opposite of me, let her talk to her grandfather, her aunties and so on.  Dont' let kids play ipad or bring toys during dinner, let them observe and play with other adults.
In friends gathering, I dont let her sit in between her daddy and I. Let her sit next to another adult.
My friends said, she is quite "calm and steady " for her age, I guess she is turning out alright in terms of confidence.

6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: water phobia on: June 12, 2012, 12:39:35 AM
Thanks John for your reply. I think I should have started when she was a baby ,.

Do you teach swimming with or without float?
7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / water phobia on: June 11, 2012, 12:52:18 AM
Hi,

How to help a 4 year old overcome water phobia? She's had water phobia ever since she was a baby.. We couldn't shampoo her hair like usual but it has to be in 'saloon style ' where she leaned backwards and no water to her face at all. Recently, I have started to just shower her down right for 10 seconds, shampoo , then shower her again. She will have swimming lesson in summer soon and I am not sure she can cope without a float in the pool.

Thanks.
8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Looking for pen pals from Spanish speaking countries on: March 10, 2012, 02:50:04 PM
Hi
My daughter is 3.5 years old and I'll be writing on behalf of her for the time being. Looking for pen pals for her to write letters , postcards , exchange used books and share festive seasons .
We can write back and send out in traditional Chinese materials. Need by normal posts so she can touch and feel the letters , I think that works better than emails .
She has been learning Spanish for some time but not much exposure to Spanish in hong kong. Pls pm me if you are interested . Thanks

12  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: problem for multilingual kid in kindergarten on: September 23, 2011, 12:49:42 AM
thanks, decided to keep the multilingual environment at home. MIL keeps talking and talking a lot to her these days. I think she'll be just fine. Thanks for all replies.
13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / problem for multilingual kid in kindergarten on: September 20, 2011, 09:46:31 AM
i have been speaking to my daughter in mandarin, her father speaks to her in English and my mil speaks to her in Cantonese. She goes to Spanish playgroup once a week. She just started going to kindergarten in September and last night she told me she didn't want to go to kindergarten, but she didnt tell me why. I called her teacher and was told that she could not seems to understand cantonese very well, but responds to Mandarin. My mil doesnt talk much, I guess that's why her Cantonese is weakest. I was advise to speak to my daughter in cantonese. She is doing well in mandarin and English, I dont want to undo what we did for her multilingual exposure, yet I think she needs to fit in the new environment.
Any similar experience?
Please advise what to do. Thanks.
14  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Avoiding short sight on: September 05, 2011, 12:44:31 AM
Shen-li, interesting article. thanks for sharing. karma to you.
15  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Avoiding short sight on: August 31, 2011, 05:25:17 AM
I followed the Tweedlewink schedule, limit my daughter's screen time to 60 minutes a day. Then I think it was 24 or 30 months, then only to 2 hours day. I still limit her screen time to 2 hours a day. Usually, less than that especially since she just started kindergarten.

Bringing kids to playground , nature is good, because when they look at an object further away, is good for the eyes. That is how we relax the eyes.

I bought reading light and installed on her head bed, and bought a 3M polarizing reading light. I hope this can prevent her from wearing glasses. She is 3 yo now.

Watch tv or computer in a well lit area. No going to the cinemas at least not until 6. Eyes are developing till 6 years old.

Sleep is very important. No overscheduling, plenty of rests.

Hope we can prevent our kids from eye sight problems. Any more info, please share. Thanks.
