How long have you exercised? Normally I see takes lots of time to reduce fat, this includes exercising and dieting (especially dieting cuz I see many people having hard time following this). I also knows a colleague of mine who is older than me. He's about 28 now he's also having hard time in reducing fat. I don't know how he carries on his fat reducing program but so far it has been 6 months and there are not much difference since then. I also don't recommend surgery, I personally dislike it since there might be some sort of unseen effects on body without knowing it. This is still my personal opinion so I just hope it might help.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Classifying the type of parents.?

I'm not really a father yet so probably my idea won't be good enough for you but still... I've heard that in a family, father mostly takes role as a "educator" sort, who will set up rules and teach the child many things about the world. While the mother shows her love and attentive, she would listen to her children's story and problem so the children can live in harmony. But that won't apply in every family, since it depends on different types of parents relation. In general it seems there are 3 types of couples: 1) The husband has the control and the wife is kinda submissive. 2) The wife has the control and the husband is kinda submissive. 3) Both husband and wife somehow have a mutual agreement and their roles are equal in the family (though I rarely see this situation). And so this husband - wife relation can affect a lot in parenting. For example, the couple (1) may have a father in main control, he can be manipulative and he likes everything under his control. Children have to listen to father, which can lead to various intense situations (or even abusive). Meanwhile the mother has less authority in the family, though she may not agree with her husband's way of teaching, somehow she will be more attentive to her children. Thus the children can be much closer to their mother than their father. That said it doesn't mean the couple (1) is absolutely bad, if the father, a.k.a the husband is a wise and knowledgeable man then there will mostly be no problem in parenting since he knows how to raise a child properly and treats his wife much better. The couple (2) also shares similar idea, except that the wife has the main control. Couple (3) seems to be the most ideal; however, it requires great understanding and knowledge about family life and how to treat family members properly. Besides knowledge and wise matter, there are other factors like money, and especially psychology but for now I can't dig that in depth.

BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Early academic learning is harmful?

I believe with the idea that letting our child learning academic early isn't a good idea. I don't mean that learning academic is bad for children but more importantly, why we want our children learn academic early? So far, I see no reason for it. I said that since based on my experience in my place, things are quite ("quite" is a lighter to describe it) rough for children. Why on Earth kindergarten children have to learn math and stuffs? Why on Earth there is a so-called entrance test to the elementary school? I don't why parents keep doing that for their children, but personally I don't see any legit reason for it.

BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Languages / [Japanese] Interesting Japanese Words used in English
|

Japan is well-known for its culture, and sometimes, well... their excessive use of English words. But what you may or may not know is that actually we also used lots of Japanese words. Some of these words are even included in English dictionary. And so, let's find out the origins of some of the most popular and interesting Japanese words used in English. 1 - Manga and AnimeProbably we don't have to explain too details about these two words as they are so popular around the world. For those who may not know, manga and anime are basically Japanese comic and animated films. The exact time when first manga appeared is still a question. Some say first manga appeared in 12th century in the form of scrolls, but others say its truly first appearance was actually in 18th century. In anycases, manga has become so popular, not only in Japan but around the world. Its easy to come up with a name that all people know, lets see... Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, .etc... On the other hand, Anime's first appearance seems to be in 19th century. We can say at first, most anime series come from manga. The more famous a manga serie is, the higher chance it will get its anime adaption. But of course there are many other standalone anime films, probably the most noticable anime films or movies come from Studio Ghibli. And yeah, nowadays we can say manga and anime are the two most popular Japanese words used in English. 2 - KaraokeThis may "blast your mind" but do you know that "Karaoke" we know today is actually originated from Japan. In details, Karaoke is a form of entertainment of Japanese people, after work, many people often go to Karaoke bars to sing and have fun. If we split the word "karaoke", we will have Kanji symbols "kara" 空 which means "empty", and ōkesutora オーケストラ which is actually Katakana word for "orchestra". So, by combining both words we have "empty orchestra"?... Well in any cases, karaoke is what people around the world do, not just Japanese people like the old days. No wonder why "karaoke" is a popular Japanese used in English, too. 3 - Japanese words for Japanese cuisineJapanese culture is so "magical" that it spreads all around the world, so too the cuisine. Among Japanese dishes, there are several common Japanese words used in English. For example: Sushi - a super popular Japanese dish made of rice part (shari) and another ingredient (neta), neta ingredients can be vary, however they are mostly seafood. In case of raw fish slices, they are called "sashimi". Ramen - Japanese noodles said to be originated from China, normally served with pork, green onions, soy sauce or miso, seaweed. Sake - Japanese wine made of fermented rice. Of course there are much more dishes to talk about, but for now, these 3 are the most popular Japanese words used in English. 4 - Samurai and NinjaProbably we are so familiar with these words since they are popular Japanese words used in English around the world, espcially on entertainment industry. "Samurai" refers to Japanese swordsmen or warriors exist in feudal Japan era. Samurais are famous for their sword skill and their unbending will of steel. In Japan they have "Bushido" or "the Way of Samurai". They are also known for their loyalty, that might be the reason why exiled or samurais who don't have master to serve are called "Ronin". On the contrary, "Ninja" refers to Japanese assasins, who normally are pictured as the guy who wear black hooded clothes and do the assasination. If you already read Naruto then this should be familiar to you (except the ninjas in Naruto are different from real-life), and of course they also have "Ninjutsu" which is "Ninja Arts". BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Languages / Meaningful Japanese Words for Life

Japanese is quite interesting and when I learn Japanese, I found some pretty interesting words with really deep meaning behind it. So here I would like to share of the them, pretty meaningful and pretty interesting: 1 - ItadakimasuThis is a pretty well-known Japanese word, even for people who haven't learned Japanese before. In simple way, we can understand "Itadakimasu" as "Thanks for the meal" or "Let's eat". However, if we dig in deeper, we can say "Itadakimasu" is somewhat relate to Buddism. The action of clasping 2 hands together with slight head bow can be seen as an act of prayer. In Buddism, all lives are considered to be precious, when you do "Itadakimasu", you have to finish all your meal as a way to express gratitude since the "food" gave it life to you. 2 - Shinrin-YokuIn English, "Shinrin-yoku" can be translated to "Forest-bathing" (pretty interesting translation). Simply put, this activity is about go into the forest, walk slowly and breathe, submerge ourselves into the nature. As it is proved, "Shinrin-yoku" is a excellent healing way, it can help alot in improving human's health such as reducing blood pressure, reducing stress, improving mood, improving sleep and body energy, .etc... In term of spiritual idea, it is like becoming one with the nature, relax and put all worries behind for better present, and future. If you are interested in this activity, you should check out this site for more information. 3 - IkigaiAre you struggling to find your dream? Are you struggling to find your purpose in life? If that is the case then this meaningful Japanese word will give you a big help. In Japanese Kanji, "Ikigai" means "reason for being", or we can say "reason for living". The more we think about it, the more meaningful things we can see around this word. If we divide this word, we will have "iki" which refers to "life" and "kai" which basically means "realizing what we expect or hope for". We can also translate "Ikagai" as "the thing that makes you wake up everyday", so let ask ourselves: "What give us motivation to get up early and say ' good morning'?". 4 - YugenBrace yourself because we are going deep into meaning of one part of Buddism in general and Japanese culture in particular - Yugen. "Yugen" are explained to be awareness of the Universe which triggers the emotion and feeling about the world. Sounds complicated isn' it? To make it easier to understand, first we will have to understand one concept from Buddism which is "nothingness". "Nothingness" does not mean "non-existance", but rather means "everything will constantly changing, some will evolve, some will dissolve, that is the way of the world". In Japanese concept of aesthetic, this means appreciating the constant changes of the world, instead of clinging into the clinging into the forever existance of things, such as the sunset scenery, or gazing at the boat which are gradually disappearing. If we apply this meaning into daily life, we will see that everything around us will constantly change, for this reason, we should focus on our present, instead of clinging into the glory or the sorrow of the past, as everything will disappear, and only present remains. 5 - Hikikomori"Hikikomori" is actually not a popular Japanese word around the world until recent years. However, in truth, it refers to a real-life situation, or people who locks themselves in their own room, seperating themselves from society. This situation is seen as a extreme state of isolation, the bad part is that it happens more and more nowadays. This might not be the worst in other countries, but in Japan, seems the percentage of "hikikomori" increases so much that Japanese Ministry of Health has to give out a definition and 6 different criterias for "hikikomori". Interesting Japanese word, but quite terrifying at the same time indeed.
