EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Ways to Increase Fine Motor Skills in 18 Month Old
|
on: November 15, 2010, 07:15:35 PM
|
I was just wondering what you have all done with your children to increase fine motor skills and dexterity in an 18 month old. She does much better than most children her age, she writes using her index and thumb like an adult and eats the same way as well, she doesn't hold the crayon or silverware in a fist. She can also put puzzles together well, but I'm not sure what else I can do. Does anyone have any ideas?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / EK With LR Instead of Cards?
|
on: April 11, 2010, 02:29:40 AM
|
I was just wondering if it's possible to do a EK program with LR or if I should just make cards and do it that way? I'm not lazy, just have a serious lack of funds for making cards, like buying the paper. What is a good place to get paper, anyway in the US? I was thinking about just using 8"x11" regular cardstock. Any suggestions? I would like to make the cards, but don't want to waste so much time if I can just do it on LR. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks. I can't wait to start doing EK with my daughter who will be 1 year old in 5 days.

I know this is something I posted months ago, but I just wanted to give an update. I purchased LR and LM and have started flashcards also. Thanks for mentioning about her being bored because she knows all the movies already, (YBCR) because I realized you're absolutely right! I just wanted to let all of you know that I started a list of words that she says a week ago, (She'll be 1 in 5 days) and so far I have FIFTY WORDS that she says! I'm so amazed and shocked, and it's great to finally see her soaking it all up. She is constantly pointing at things to know what they are, and then she'll try to repeat the word that I say. The funniest was her trying to say 'Cherokee' our neighbor's horse. She must have tried to say it 10 times and just couldn't spit it out. And she can even sat 'bellybutton' which is 4 syllables! I read in MY baby book that my mom was impressed when I said 'banana' when I was two. Haha! Thanks for everyone's posts to all my questions, and all the support. I love this forum!

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Please Help, Question About Little Math
|
on: February 10, 2010, 05:15:14 PM
|
I am using Little Math, (Free Trial) and purchasing it today! (YAY!!!) I love it so far, but am having one problem. I think the icons are supposed to be in random placement, but they are in grid. I can't find how to change them without changing EVERY session individually. Can anyone let me know how to do this? And I'm sorry if this thread is in the wrong place. Also, I don't test my baby but with LR and YBCR I can see that she is learning a lot. How do you know when baby is starting to pick things up in LM? She's 9 months old. Thanks everyone!

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: LR Curriculum Semester 1 for Child who knows YBCR and basic words?
|

Hi, I have done YBCR with my 9 month old since she was 2.5 months old. I just got Little Reader. I am on day 3 right now with LR (LOVE IT!) and she knows the YBCR words but she doesn't seem the least bit bored with LR. The other girls are right about it being familiar and seeing different pictures, especially of the animals. She's already showing signs of knowing words in 3 days where she wasn't with YBCR. If I were you (and I'm in the same situation,) I would leave it just like it is unless your child seems bored. Good luck!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Just Got LR!!!

I just got Little Reader, and it's AMAZING! (Well, I'm doing the trial...) I have a question. I downloaded the red dots for Math and was wondering what is the best way to show them since they are in 1-5, 6-10, etc. I can't take away a number every day and add a new one. Please let me know. Should I show 1-5 once a day and 6-10 once a day for 5 days and then switch to 11-15 once a day and 16-20 once a day for 5 days? Just ideas, thanks! And way to go everyone for uploading such awesome curriculum, I downloaded alot and my baby loves them (When the word MOUTH came on she made a kiss noise!)

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Schedule for a 9 Month Old?
|
on: January 28, 2010, 12:31:21 AM

I was wondering what a good schedule is for a 9 month old baby? Right now we watch YBCR every day, and I read lots of books, look at some flashcards, and do a few red dot math cards. Could you tell me what you all did at this age? I have LOTS of time and she LOVES to learn, including looking at flashcards. Is it detrimental at all to look at lots of different cards every day or should I only show her a few one day and a few the next? And should I teach any type of EK at this age? I also let her watch Brainy Baby French a few times a week, and speak some French to her. (English is our main language.) I just don't know what to do with her! I will be homeschooling her so I want to start a good schedule now. By the way, I have done alot of physical exercises and she sat up unsupported at 4 1/2 months, crawled at 5 months, and took her first few steps at 8 months 10 days. (Christmas day!) She also says 4 words. I'm so proud of her!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / What Would Be Good To Do With YBCR To Help?
|
on: January 26, 2010, 02:17:57 AM
|
I only have the YBCR DVDs and I just want to know what I can do in addition to showing the DVDs to help my daughter read. She's been watching the DVDs for 6 months mostly steadily, and only mimics some actions like arms up, clap, and the action songs. If I show her flash cards what is the best way to do it? (How often, how many cards, what do I say when I show them, do I rotate cards, etc.) Please let me know, I'm drawing a blank! Also if I do LR do I have to do additional cards or is the program in itself enough? Thanks everyone!

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Where the Mild Things Are- Book Review
|

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people making or reading "picture books for adults." I just don't like them being placed in the children's book section, reviewed with the children's books, or discussed with children's books...and, sadly, a lot of award-winners in recent years have been for books ostensibly aimed at children but really more appealing to the sensibilities of adults. That's just wrong...
It's the same way with 'kids' movies, like Pixar and some of the newer cartoons with all the inuentos and even some swear words! Sad...

Hi ,
I started YBCR when my twin babies were 4 months old , now they are 8 months completed , just before a month my daughter could put her arms up and down when we say that to her , and today to our surprise we saw her clapping hands when I recited the rhyme "if you r happy ......", we where so excited and I thought of posting it here today , but the thread was already started when I logged in ..(gud coincidence....)... though my son is not able to do the action he smiles and giggles when we say "arms up " , "clap", ...expecting him to do it very soon with lot of hope am teaching him.....
tatooedmommy :
"great news"...its really good to see when babies do something what we teach them ....I understand how happy u would be....keep up the good work with your daughter....
Regards PreethiALex
Thank you! It must be so much fun with twins, because they can teach eachother. Congratulations on your babies achievements as well!!!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / YBCR Success!!!
|

I did Your Baby Can Read DVDs when my little girl was 2 1/2 - 3 months, but then the computer I had them on crashed. I just bought them again, and started 1 week ago, the starter disk 2 times per day. (She is 5 1/2 months.) Yesterday I noticed that when "arms up" came up on the screen she put her arms up!!!! I thought it might just be a coincidence, but she did it the next time it came on too, and also when it says "arms down" she puts her arms up again and then down. She puts her hands together when it says "clap", too, even though she can't clap yet. I'm so impressed! Anyone else with a young baby doing YBCR? What results have you had? I only know one other person doing it, and she started when her dd was 2 years old.
