1  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Telling the time on: June 13, 2019, 08:23:35 AM
Telling the time is an important skill in everyday life, but it can be tricky to learn.  Before your child will be able to tell the time on a clock they will need to grasp how time relates to their own experiences. Start with the general concept of time – morning, afternoon, evening. Draw your kids attention to time. Mention the time at different points in the day. "It’s 7 o’clock: time for dinner." Put a clock in your child’s bedroom. This will help your kids to understand time because of constantly moving hands.

2  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Festival Joy: Teach your kids about Hari Raya festival on: June 07, 2019, 08:23:33 AM
The festival of Eid, known in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia as Hari Raya Puasa. It falls on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Hijrah (Islamic) calendar. It is a celebratory occasion following a month of fasting, which is known as Ramadan. The term hari raya is Malay for “big (or grand) day of rejoicing” .

During the morning of Hari Raya, would visit the mosque and recite special prayers. Other practices observed include asking forgiveness from elders and visiting relatives and friends. Understanding the tradition: https://learning.covoji.com/english/hari-raya-celebration/

It is important for kids to know the festivals celebrated in different country. Tell them the story behind festival and encourage them to read about it. Make things related to a festival together as a family, for example set up Christmas tree during Christmas time, make rangoli during Diwali, make ketupat (packed rice wrap inside diamond shape coconut leaf) during Hari Raya.

8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / How to teach your child to determine even and odd numbers? on: April 18, 2019, 10:38:48 AM
Teaching children odd and even numbers can be tricky, but it needn't be. Here is three simple ways to help your kids learn even and odd numbers.
First, introduce your kids to the concept of even and odd numbers. Tell kids that odd numbers are lonely, and even numbers have a friend. Even numbers can be paired up exactly. Odd numbers can't. Details concept on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/is-it-odd-or-even/

Second, let your child practice and identify what is even and odd numbers. Egg Even Odd teach kids to differentiate even and odd numbers.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.covoji.eggevenodd

Third, use chart. Below chart introduce all the even and odd numbers from one to hundred. Blue colour highlighted number is odd, purple colour highlighted number is even. You can print out the chart and stick on your child reading space so they can familiar with the numbers.

9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Counting with toddlers -- early learning math on: April 13, 2019, 10:36:38 AM
Numbers and counting are a crucial part of your child's growing mathematical understanding. Counting is learned when toddlers:
  • Start to recognize how many objects are in a small set without counting.
  • Knowing the "number words" from one to ten and their order.
  • Know the sequence regardless of which number they start on. So if you say "start counting at four" they will count "four, five . ."
  • Able to count visible objects. If your child counts six oranges 1,2,3,4,5,6 and then you ask "how many oranges are there"? and they know the answer.

At home, you can continue to look for simple opportunities to extend their understanding of numbers and counting in everyday activities. Here is some number activity to help kids practice counting:
1. Teach your kids to count marshmallows while making a cup of hot chocolate. More on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/hot-cocoa-with-marshmallows-math/
2. Give them a list of various things around your home – windows, tables, chairs, etc. Check on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/count-around-your-house/
3. Count the circles of caterpillar, https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/caterpillar-math/

How far is the Moon from Earth? Check out the answer: https://learning.covoji.com/curious-world/the-moon/

KEY VOCABULARY - MOON
Atmosphere; Climate; Earth; Moon; Solar System; Solar Eclipse; Orbit
12  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Pattern and Kids on: March 25, 2019, 07:47:28 AM
Children have a natural tendency to find patterns; as they reinforce feelings of safety and predictability. Patterns help children learn sequencing and to make predictions, which leads to stronger mathematical skills. Times tables, addition and skip counting all require an understanding in patterning.

How to begin with pattern teaching for kids?

It’s important to point out to your child that what makes a pattern a pattern. Pattern is the sequence repeats in the same order.  For example, “apple, banana, apple, banana, apple” is a basic ABA pattern. “Apple, apple, banana, apple, apple, banana” is a basic AAB pattern.  Here is some simple idea to teach your kids patterns.

  • While folding the laundry, ask your child to help by matching socks by their size and colour, and then putting them into pairs.
  • Make a sound pattern with rhythm instruments. BANG, tap, tap, BANG, tap, tap.
  • Make patterns using snack food.  Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin.  Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin, pretzel.

Can you guess the pattern for below?
13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Math Activity: Me....by Number on: March 21, 2019, 05:38:55 AM
Number is important in our life. Teaching numbers to children is simple. Parents can motivate them to relate numbers with activities they perform on a daily basis. Math about Me is a ideal way for kids to get excited about math. Kids can record their house number, height, birthday, number of family members, zip code, and number of letters in their name. It provide opportunity for kids to learn different math concept at the same time. Practice physical counting skill and create your own math story: https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/math-about-me-our-number-story/

14  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Activity to Improve Children English Pronounciation on: March 14, 2019, 03:23:48 AM
When learning a language like English, it is important to learn the correct pronunciation right away, not to correct your pronunciation at some point in the future. Tongue-twisters is a fun way to improve pronunciation and fluency. They are a type of diction or articulation exercise, which helps you learn to speak clearly. They help in memorizing a new word. Its because when your kids do a thing repeatedly it gets imprinted in their brain and then its no longer new.

Tips to use tongue twisters for developing speech
   (1) Start reciting the tongue twisters at a slow pace and ensure it is able to be recited clearly
   (2) The next step would be to know the tongue twister by heart.
   (3) Repeat the tongue twister as fast as possible until it is mastered and able to be recited three times in a row without stumbling.
   (4) When one tongue twister is mastered, try another.

We use tongue twisters to improve the child’s constant and vowel sounds. Examples of ‘p’ tongue twisters include: Peter Piper, Pheasant plucker. Examples of ‘s’ tongue twisters include: Seventy seven, Swan Swam.

Learn a few tongue twisters and repeat them several times each day and you will see a noticeable improvement. Get tongue twisting: https://learning.covoji.com/english/practice-pronunciation-in-english-with-tongue-twisters/

15  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Is the tongue a muscle? on: March 05, 2019, 10:30:37 AM
The tongue  tongue  is an organ, or body part, in the mouth. It is made up of a group of muscles.  These muscles perform the different jobs of the tongue. The front part of the tongue is very flexible and can move around a lot, working with the teeth to create different types of words. This part also helps you eat by helping to move food around your mouth while you chew. The muscles in the back of your tongue help you make certain sounds, like the letters "k" and hard "g" (like in the word "go").  Learn more: https://learning.covoji.com/curious-world/is-the-tongue-a-muscle/
