EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: LR with a 2 1/2 yo. Does it work?

Hi neptune, this are just my personal five cents on the subject... I started LR with my older son when he was 1.5 yrs old, he enjoyed it, but never seemed to ´learn´ anything. We stopped doing it for some time and than we picked it up again.. I also had physical flashcards and readers, but he simply never got the point until we started with phonics. Now at 4 yrs. old he reads pretty much everything, the sight words and the words he can sound out.. All that to say, I´m sure LR helped, but he just wasn´t a ´sight-reading´ kid. I think every child is different and I wouldn´t get discouraged after three weeks. 2.5 yrs is a good age and you might be surprised what your child is learning even though he doesn´t ´show´ it. My kids sometimes surprise me saying or reading a word in one of the three languages we are learning, that I just don´t remember teaching them.... I imagine that basics are laid and from now on they will fly....

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How to teach long vowels?
|

Thank you Korrale, that does help a bit, as far as I´m concerned it´s a science. I first learned to read in Czech, which is quite simple as far as the reading goes, because all the letters have only one sound and you read exactly what you see. English is much more complicated... Well, anybody else any other tips? By the way, what about the magic E and the word "come"? Thanks

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / How to teach long vowels?

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help! My four year old knows all the letters of the alphabet and their sounds, he can read three letter words with all the vowels and he can sound out any word that has short vowels. My question is what do I do now? The fact that "a" in bat makes a different sound than "a" in bate is very confusing... How do I smooth him into long vowels? Thank you!!!!!!!!

Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Polyglot Baby Method for 7 Languages

Here are my 5 cents regarding the Polyglot baby program. I don´t have it, but I´ve seen it on the international book fair in Mexico. It looks very very interesting, unfortunately, their prices are waaaay out of our reach (last time I asked it was about $900). Their reasoning is, if you sign your kid up to learn 7 languages you´ll end up paying much more than this... Well, i don´t know how much is the whole set these days, but if we could afford it we would definitely get it. The program is designed for children under 7 years old, it includes 10 DVD´s, 7 languages (German, Mandarin, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portugese), it looks like they teach 300 words in each of these languages. It´s a 3D animation and they cover things like colors, domestic and wild animals, insects, body parts, things around the house, sports, food, clothes, family, occupations... The set also includes 210 flashcards with the pictures taken from the videos, a dictionary (word and picture) of the 7 languages, lesson plan and magic album with extra activities. (Here is one of their sites in Spanish http://metodobebepoliglota.mx/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=8). If anybody is interested, I would find out how much do they charge these days and if you send me the money plus shipping (we´re talking mexico here, the shipping is not the cheapest, but it´s just an idea), I´ll get it for you. Actually, the end of November there will be a couple of book fairs here and I´m sure they will have a representative here. Usually they try their best to promote this program at these events and they offer lower prices.

BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: LITTLE MUSICIAN - BETA TESTING details

After reading all these great posts, not sure I even want to mention my humble musical education, but in case I could be of help, here it goes. I play piano and guitar (8 years formal education in music theory and piano and 5 years guitar), I sing (participated in our church), I read notes (it´s pretty much only the sheet music I can produce on piano, simple songs I can play by ear). I´ve done a lot of research as far as what is offered these days as music educational programs for children and I decided to patiently wait for LMs, it seems to have a lot to offer. At home we sing and play instruments, but I can hardly wait for what is to be a wholesome music teaching curriculum. I love music and I´m happy to play some, but I want my kids to experience music as a language, not just to learn the theory and the ins and outs of it, but have music as a natural part of them. (not sure I expressed that right, hope you understand )

Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Any tips for regaining your beautiful pre-pregnancy figure?
|
on: May 27, 2011, 09:26:11 PM

I´m pretty sure I´m the only mother of 6 month old baby who still looks kind of pregnant. I see all these moms around a month or two after giving birth fitting with ease into their pre-pregnancy clothes and I get all discouraged. I don´t get into a depression state over it (my gorgeous baby boy was worth every extra kilo..), but wouldn´t mind to feel a bit lighter... Any ´tried and proven´ tips and tricks anybody?

Hi, just a little comment.. I have a two year old son that understands and speaks three languages. He was exposed to them since birth, my husband speaking to him pretty much exclusively Spanish and myself mixing my mother tongue and English, plus he hears us speak English and the environment is Spanish. They are smart, they will figure it out, dont be afraid of the tongue confusion.
