61  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: KNOWS the words, but won't "read - what gives?? on: January 19, 2011, 10:04:04 PM
I'm glad that you have yours figured out! For us, is DEFINITELY not a problem with not being able to say it. They are ALL words that she can already say!

I'm really just doesn't make sense!
62  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / KNOWS the words, but won't "read" - what gives?? on: January 19, 2011, 09:48:26 PM
My little girl (24m) knows many words. If I ask her, she will pick one out of a group, match them to objects, ect. But she won't actually SAY them! She is very verbal, so that's not the problem...

Any ideas on what may be the reason?
63  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Has anyone made file folder games using YBCR words? on: January 18, 2011, 06:17:24 PM
I'd love to get my hands on something like this too! Let's cross our fingers that someone says yes!
64  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Teaching multiple languages you don't know on: January 18, 2011, 06:00:52 PM
What a FANTASTIC story!! Children are so brilliant!

You've inspired me!! We already do a lot, bu I think I'd like to step up our language exposure...

We already do Chinese, French, and ASL. I've been wanting to also teach some others such as Spanish, German, Japanese, and Latin but thought I would introduce them later. Maybe I shouldn't wait!!

Thanks! KARMA!!
65  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: To what Extent are you willing to go for Early Education? on: January 18, 2011, 05:56:02 PM
I don't go out of my way to TRY to teach my babies in the womb, but I'm pretty sure they are benefiting from certain activities that we do anyways. For example, I play a lot of guitar for the girls, which sits right next to my belly. We also do a lot of reading and learning, which I'm sure the baby can hear!

I would be interested to see, years down the road, what effect the programs designed to teach the fetus actually have...
66  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: My 7mo old baby fell off the bed :( on: January 18, 2011, 05:53:08 PM
I wouldn't be concerned at all if I were you!

When my youngest was about 7 months old, my husband was holding her and let go, thinking that he was holding the larger one. She went bonk very hard on the floor and he was concerned for MONTHS - in fact he STILL talks about it.

I am happy to report, however, that there have been no negative effects. She's now 11 months old and extremely bright!

Babies fall...they're actually built to survive it well. Don't worry!
67  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Any Mom Bloggers Out There? on: January 18, 2011, 05:45:29 PM

68  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Exceptional Child Rearing, Should We Be Ashamed? on: January 18, 2011, 05:43:34 PM
I'm so glad that this thread is here so I can vent!

Generally speaking, I'm very lucky to have people around me who are very supportive of our early learning efforts. My husband, the grandparents, even our extended family are all very supportive because the can clearly see the results it produces. My oldest daughter at 12 months was saying over 50 words where her cousin of the same age was saying absolutely nothing.

So, yes, I am lucky to have the support most of the time (aside from the occasional comment from my grandmother like, "why is she wasting all her time making these games and stuff for them? I know she means well, but she should be doing something better with her time!" But she's still very impressed by their knowledge and generally supportive.)

So, why do I need to vent?

Well, I generally post on my facebook updates about what I am doing with the girls for "school". An extended friend of my husbands family thought it was her duty to write me a message letting me know that "...i know you mean well but they are just babies and are only little children once. both you and they should just enjoy their childhood."

I tried to write back to her saying, "Hi *****! We only do learning activities when it's fun
Violet cries when I stop and says, "More! More""
Don't worry, I'm not a total nutcase drilling them so they can be geniuses."
She, of course, just wanted to meddle, not have an ACTUAL conversation about it, so she disappeared. I then updated my status to read:

...wants to clarify for all of those people who think I'm a nutter stealing my children's childhood by teaching them - it's all play for us! We stop when they are not interested, but normally they BEG for more. Violet cries when I try to stop, Lily yells, "Wanna learn more, Mom!" Rest assured, I am not tying them down and propping their eyes open with toothpicks while I show them flashcards! smile

I feel better now.

Seriously, what is wrong with people?! How could you possibly interact with young children all day and have them NOT learn? What would you do? Even playing lego is educational! Today Lily was playing with lego and making a tower for her Nanna (who was on the phone) and she said, "Making a tower with a wide base for Nanna!!" She learned that vocabulary when we played legos previously and her towers were falling over. Daddy and I simply explained how to make them more stable!

Honestly, What could you do with children all day that's not educational??

69  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Next Week's Learning Goals on: January 18, 2011, 01:46:56 PM
Wow! Spanishtown is awesome! I guess I'll have to add Spanish into our curriculum!! smile

I wish I had this site in French and, frankly, I'm surprised it's not, since it is a Canadian site! Odd...
70  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: woman kills 3 month old baby over facebook game, farmville! on: January 18, 2011, 04:24:15 AM
Yes, there was also another poor child who drowned while his mother was playing Cafe World on facebook.

I honestly do completely agree that there should be some sort of testing to complete before one can have children....

So sad.
71  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Next Week's Learning Goals on: January 18, 2011, 03:19:18 AM
That's great, shaman!

We don't really get much done in the way of phys. ed, unfortunately. My little lady likes to dance, so we do a lot of that! I would also suggest trying the Zippity or something like the Fisher-Price Smart Cycle. They are "screen time" but at least it gets the kids active!

You could also try some beginner yoga! Lily likes it a lots. I got the free printable cards that we use here -

Good luck with all of your learning - it sounds like you already do a lot!! smile
72  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Baby wants to touch the keyboard... on: January 18, 2011, 03:11:25 AM
Yes, I just let mine touch the keyboard during our lessons - it's actually the only way she'll stand there and watch!
73  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Next Week's Learning Goals on: January 18, 2011, 03:09:11 AM
No problem! I'll let you know if I come across anything else interesting! smile I hope those help!
74  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Next Week's Learning Goals on: January 18, 2011, 03:05:11 AM

I don't have experience with these programs (except Little Pim) but you might like to try them out...?

Also a few clips here:

And tonnes on youtube!

This site also has some great looking resources:

Good luck!
75  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Next Week's Learning Goals on: January 18, 2011, 02:36:21 AM
Let me know if you might be interested in trying the video lessons and I can ask around for you!

I plan to start teaching violin in March (Lily will be 26m at the time). I know that she is ready because she already has a small guitar that I am teaching her to play. Right now she can hold it in proper position, strum with or without a pick, and identify the strings. I think this week she may be ready to start learning chords.

I also plan to make keyboard charts for the within the next few months he will be large musical scores with each note having it's own colour and corresponding stickers on her keyboard. I will start with very simple songs like "Hot Crossed Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and progress from there.

After that, I will let her choose whatever instrument(s) she would like.
