1  Parents' Lounge / Forum Games / Re: Forum Game--Add a word on: November 15, 2008, 06:13:50 PM

Today morning, I washed my dishes and went to buy 237 diapers! Wondering about how everyone dances without anyone to join with them, I flipped over backwards. I think purple platypus' big and fat body is beautifully proportioned yet overweight, though KL said it felt macho to dance with flowers. Fortunately, he sang a funky tune involving complicated lyrics and comforted a bear who didn't have a computer.

While I succumbed to being so busy shaving my legs, I tripped on the blocks of plastic that was not even clean, knocked my crystal

6  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Kids taught Doman in the 80's, where are they now? on: September 29, 2008, 06:48:47 PM

Yes i do the reading and all the rest of the development with the little boys with the sure knowledge that it didn't harm my own kids - doesn't harm them when they are 'extended' at school either (I was an infant and junior teacher and worked with special needs so saw it happen LOL)

I do know that kids will do best when they get lots of praise - and when they know you believe in their abilities - if you don't have that faith in them then I think it takes longer.
Our house has always been full of books - and the boys see us getting enjoyment from reading,  and sharing books with them, so from the start they have the desire to learn.
I have always wondered to myself how my three kids would have developed without lots of stimulation in the pre-school years - but I wouldn't have dreamed of testing this out  Wink
Good luck with your daughter - she is at the age when your programme will get her off to a great start - and don't forget the close bonding  smile  you will all benefit I'm sure !!
7  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Kids taught Doman in the 80's, where are they now? on: September 29, 2008, 08:35:41 AM
We used the Doman 'Teach Your Baby to Read' kit and book in about 1966 - it was new here then and other members of the family were very critical of the idea that you could teach reading to toddlers.

We did about a year of it with my DS when he was 13 months old,and he learned a lot of words and short sentences - I remember having to make cards for him as he progressed beyond the scope of the kit. He was ahead of other children of his age for reading skills through school but struggled with other subjects.  He was never a high achiever academically. As an adult he was most interested in mechanics and practical things.

My daughter - born in 1967, had a few months of the Doman method as it was then (in the 1960s) she picked up reading very early - I'm not sure whether that was as a result of having done the cards or the home environment generally. She was also ahead in terms of reading age, an avid reader, and did well as a student.
Since getting her 3 children to secondary school she has had time to develop her own career. She is now a craftsperson with many skills in most areas of practical craft. She has started writing and illustrating childrens books.  In addition, she is now becoming established as a professional artist.

On the other hand my younger DS born in 1979 did not benefit from the Doman kit (I think I had lost it by the time he was born), he seemed to 'pick up' reading by himself, becoming a fluent reader by the age of 4. I homeschooled him through to the age of 12. He excelled academically and particularly in English as a student, and is an IT advisor with the Ambulance Service.
So in my experience, it is debateable whether the early reading that I tried with my first two kids made much difference to their adult lives - but I am still an advocate of giving babies and small children every opportunity to maximise their skills in every respect.  yes

8  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: upper case v lower case . . . on: September 23, 2008, 08:44:34 AM
Thanks and a Karma boost to alll for your reassurance on this  smile

kmum - I feel sure from what I remember of the Doman book it DID say use the capital letters when doing Proper Nouns - but having not looked at the book for years - I just wondered whether 'advised practice' might have been updated.

KL Yep - I find the playback settings invaluable since I use the same sets for three kids of different ages.

I just love the support provided by all the like minded people on here. Thank goodness for Brillbaby and Brillkids yes
9  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: upper case v lower case . . . on: September 22, 2008, 11:14:50 PM
Thanks  smile
I just wanted to confirm that using the lower case first, then dealing with upper case would be acceptable nowadays - I had wondered whether fashions had changed in schools.
 unsure
I was talking to a friend the other day and told her about LR. She said it sounded great - but then she said that doing LR might be harmful because her child will be going to school at the end of next year (he has just had his 4th birthday). Then she told me that during a first visit to the school where her DS will be attending - she was actually told not to try to teach Daniel any letters or anything to do with reading - but to leave all that to the teachers when he starts school - so that the teacher has all the children at the same stage and can 'take them through it' all together.

I was very surprised, and actually quite shocked, to learn that the parents of that set of children had got the idea that they were not to introduce their children to books with words in until they reached the age of nearly 5 years old  mad
It was because of this that I started to wonder whether things had changed in education now.  After what you have said I think I shall just do things the way I used to for our three little grandsons Wink
10  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Story - The Three Brothers on: September 21, 2008, 09:48:16 AM
I have uploaded a .cat file The Three Brothers.

This is a story telling a little about 3 brothers, and the things they do and like doing. It contains images and pronunciation files (short sentences).
It was fun to make and I hope you enjoy it  smile
11  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Play back modes missing, repeat sequence, time lapse on: September 20, 2008, 09:36:34 AM

........media - word - media (-word)

And: Repeat sequence 1x 2x 3x

So picture + sound, written word + sound, picture + sound,  repeat the same sequence,  before going to the next word...............

Hi  smile
I would like the option of media/word/media

The option of word/media/mix would be useful as well

I find that Joseph likes to have the sequence repeated - I tend to have to right click to go back sometimes for him. (He is a child who practises his sentence construction very carefully and speaks very deliberately but accurately.)

His older and younger brothers both like to go at a cracking pace so the ability to fine tune the playback a bit more would be great.
Thanks
Chris
12  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / upper case v lower case . . . on: September 16, 2008, 08:23:33 PM
I am trying to make a story for the 3yrs 6mths grandson - and am wondering whether I ought to use upper case letters to start peoples names etc? What do you do?

Do you teach the upper case letters at the same time as the lower case? It struck me that the capital letters are not just a big version of the small ones - so eg 'Daddy' could look very different from 'daddy' and so on.

Do you just use the words without capital letters at the beginning, or do you just start using capitals without comment - alternatively do you teach the upper case alphabet separately - or even teach the upper case alongside the lower case for each letter?

Things have moved on a lot since I was teaching  big grin Though I notice that phonics is back in fashion same as we taught (many years ago )  blush
