EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Ideas for math activities for 2 year olds?
|
on: September 21, 2010, 06:18:06 PM
|
Hi there, I'm just looking for inspiration for more math related activities for my toddler.
We use LM and try to count things as much as possible. We have foam numbers in the tub and bought this cool vinyl number line that he runs on sometimes...
But what else??
What level of puzzles or games is appropriate? Are matching card games considered math games? I think workbooks and concepts of time and measurement are still a bit too advanced for him.
Any and all ideas are welcome...

Local Support Groups / Русский / Re: Russian Curriculum Discussion

Hello everyone, I have an interesting question about the voice recordings for the Russian curriculum.
I have noticed that there is a distinct Moscovite accent! And I have downloaded some categories that have recordings with pronunciations with this regional accent for Little Reader.
I am curious if all of the recordings will be done with this regional accent. Is it considered the most representative of the language?
I apologize in advance if this is a weird question or offends anyone - it is not my intention at all, it's just not how I speak Russian or how the family members I learned from speak it. My family is from the part of the former USSR that is now Ukraine and the Russian I hear puts emphasis on different syllables sometimes.
Any thoughts on this?
I am reading along in this thread and very interested even though I cannot contribute much. I can read almost everything that is written and understand all of the curriculum, but my Russian is just too basic to add improvements or suggestions.
Of course, I am in favor of the more natural sounding phrases and grammatically correct conjugations, etc.
Thanks! mom2ross

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Bits of intelligence phrases for 20 month old?
|
on: August 27, 2010, 12:14:41 AM
|
I am definitely not at a loss for subject matter material! He asks all the time "What is that, mama?" so I can follow his curiosity, and he still loves animals, vehicles, letters, numbers, shapes and instruments...
My real question is about how complex the statements should be for a 20 months old.
DadDude mentioned he tried to make the bits of knowledge phrases super clear and understandable for his boy's stage of comprehension.
So, I just wanted to confirm that the goal of bits of encyclopedic knowledge are not for stretching the child and challenging them with definitions, but to really get them to understand the concepts in the cards.
Basic statements are crucial, then.
I'd love to see examples of very basic EK cards.
TIA

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / New room, new decorating ideas?
|
on: August 22, 2010, 07:07:38 AM

Well, decorating for early learning, anyway!
Can you share some of your favorite room ideas?
We have just moved houses (very overwhelming with a toddler!), and we've got new opportunities.
Here is what I know so far:
-Label items in the room -Display/place things at child's height for opportunities to do things independently (i.e. coat rack, books, place settings, etc.) -A small table and chair -A map poster
What else is good to have in a room that is geared towards early learning/reading like we all on this forum are interested in?
Any home-schooling parents have more ideas? I've seen some nice blog pictures from home-schoolers already.
TIA!!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Early speaking skills = auditory learner?
|
on: August 22, 2010, 07:03:30 AM
|
I'm often wondering these days if I have an auditory learner at home.
Do you think there is any correlation to early speaking skills and a more auditory learner?
My frame of reference are the other toddlers in my mother's group. My boy can speak in 3-7 word phrases, asks questions like "What is that, Mama?", etc. whereas the other toddlers might say one or two words at a time, if at all.
I'm so not auditory, so that's why I'm trying to be sensitive to his learning style, especially if it's so different from my own!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Text pointing - proper form?
|
on: August 22, 2010, 06:38:44 AM
|
Here is a quote from a recent BrillKids newsletter:
"Inconsistent and explicit text pointing [when reading to a child] disturbs the attention of a child, it interrupts the cadence of the language, and it ends up making reading more confusing for a child – and a lot less fun… You need to make text pointing a consistent, accurate but unobtrusive habit."
Which begs the question - what is proper text pointing etiquette?
I've been trying to do it, but often my hand gets in the way of the images, and my boy doesn't really follow my finger. He's a good listener and often recalls which words complete the sentence on a page, but he's not so motivated to sound out words...

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: New to Encyclopedic Knowledge approach
|
on: August 22, 2010, 06:26:10 AM
|
Hi everyone,
I'm still confused about the goal and purpose of EK. Is the purpose to expose them to verbal language or is the goal to get them to actually know facts about subject matter?
When is the right age to begin flashing bits of knowledge?
How is flashing bits of knowledge different from reading to your child from a book?
Thanks for any clarification, mom2ross

Thanks everyone! I just found the Meet the Sight Words DVDs on my library's online catalog!
We've been stuck for a while now (not to mention going through many transitions). We've mastered our letters, know only a handful of words by sight, and are losing interest in LR for some reason.
Can't wait to give this video a try.
