61  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: 3 month old infant stimulation on: December 31, 2012, 07:33:12 AM
Here is a link to my list. It's applicable to both typical infants & those with special needs.

63  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Has EL ever had negative effects on a child? on: December 30, 2012, 07:42:55 PM
I really tried to research this before starting a Doman program with my dd when she was a baby. I found lots of "expert" opinions but very few true facts/studies or even personal experiences that were bad. The only real negative opinion from a parent that I found was a father who claimed that doing a Doman fast flashing program caused his son to develop autism - That one kind of baffled me. I just can't see how flash cards cause autism. I'd love to have asked that dad about vaccines, environmental factors, etc
64  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: down syndrome and little reader program on: October 25, 2012, 02:06:04 AM
Amy Hunter - my dd enjoyed this program as soon as she was old enough to enjoy looking at pictures. She did however seem to learn much better when we printed off the cards & showed them to her. As she got older she seemed to learn better on the computer. In my opinion this is the best program because it is limitless in what you can teach & fully customize able.

Before you buy, check out this information in the special needs discount:

65  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: I feel i dont have time to teach my daughter on: October 22, 2012, 01:12:14 AM
We are now doing a neurodevelopmental program so it seems like we are always doing something! Before we started the program though, I always tried to coincide teaching with another activity.  For example, when K was little we kept a set of cards by the change table & did them as well as a speech activity every diaper change. We do certain activities at bed time as well as at meal times. We also have activities to do in the vehicle like listening to stories on tape, & eye excercises.

We also try to fit activities in every day life. the garden is a great example of this -   We talk about seeds, plants, growing, what plants need to live, soil & what it is made of, decomposing, etc. then when we harvest there is lots of counting, sorting by colour/ripeness & on & smile

67  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Picture books for advanced readers on: October 08, 2012, 06:38:11 AM
My dd loves anything by Robert Munsch.
68  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Anyone tried Little Musician? on: October 03, 2012, 01:24:29 PM
We have only done the trial but my 5 yo with DS loves it & was
Very obviously learning from it. Very quickly she learned to raise or lower her notes to match what she was hearing.
69  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: is it possible to overload our kids? on: October 03, 2012, 05:19:02 AM
I remember reading a quote from Glenn Doman.  I can't remember it word for word but basically it said that the more information you put into your brain, the more it is able to hold.

I agree with pp's.  As long as you & your child are both having fun, you aren't doing too much.
70  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Am I Teaching My Kid to NOT Speed Read? on: October 01, 2012, 05:56:12 AM
When my dd is reading for her own enjoyment I allow her to read at whatever speed she chooses. Like your son, she can 't speak as fast as she reads. I remember posting a question on here a few years ago because I was concerned that she only said some if the words rather than the whole sentence. Some of the wise parents on this forum helped me figure things out.  It turns out that she was only saying the words that were pertinent in the sentence. She was reading them all but purposefully only sayin the important words so that the story made sense & her speech could still keep up. she Still does this now when reading outloud to herself at age 5.

I think that as long as you give him opportunities to read in both ways he will still learn to speed read. I have 2 reasons for making dd slow down when reading. One is that I want her to be able to read clearly enough for others to understand & the 2nd is that my dd has a speech delay & reading carefully helps her practice her speech.
71  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Glenn Doman on: September 11, 2012, 03:14:31 PM
Yes, they are very worthwhile yes

If I had a baby who was under 1 year of age, I would buy the How Smart is Your Baby book.  For older kids, even up to 6 years, I would buy How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence & the Physically Superb book.

It is a wonderful program & we have seen tremendous results from it.

74  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: About to start public kindergarten on: September 03, 2012, 05:49:21 AM
I think I'd give the public school a try too but monitor things closely. If it is not a good fit then you can revisit your decision.

My dd is also way ahead in reading & ahead in math, geography etc. On the other hand her speech is somewhat delayed  so we have decided to hold her back 1 year. I think it is the best decision in the long run but I do have concerns with her being bored because she is so much more advanced.
75  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My 22 m old can swim Freestyle but can't read on: September 01, 2012, 05:16:24 AM
In the beginning I think my dd learned better with printed flash cards rather than on the computer too. Once she got started reading it didn't seem to matter anymore.

As hard as it is, I would try  to focus less on what exactly he knows & more on just continuing to input. Often kids store this info away & may not use it until later but are still learning. Also, by not focussing on what he knows you won't  be unconsciously putting pressure on him to learn. Just keep joyfully giving him input & I'm sure you will be amazed with the end result.
