EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Tweedlewink math along with doman method

Wow that is interesting about doman and makes complete sense. I just bought over 1,000 bits from a gal who had a brain Injured child and went though the program where she went to The institute 2-3x/ year. Hard core. She said the for her was tons of bits words etc. Flash often repeat often. So now I understand why. Right now we are doing equations and Im flashing 2 sets/day and stay on each function a week. We skip Sundays. We are doing + &- for a week then x /. For another week. Then I'll go back to add/subtract and add more integers. In between I'm starting to show numerals so that when we start multiplying I can flash just numbers. But we are about a month from that (I'm not the most consistent person but i do my best). Has anyone started to add numerals? Any pointers would help Thanks! The doc

yes, that is GREAT food for thought. too much review kicks in the left brain too early! a very good thing to remember. however, the question is how much is too much review? i agree that doman reviews too much. i think that is why i like TW b/c they say view the dvd 1-3/x. so what do you guys think about showing bit card 3x/each set before retiring them? what do you all do as far a showing materials? thanks!

i'm doing the same thing. we're doing the dots and i started TW (the whole program) a few weeks ago. the nice thing is the lessons are very short. i feel like it reinforces the dots we've already flashed as they are not dots but other images. i am interested in little math and was wondering if it would be starting too much at the beginning as we are already doing 3 step equations... there is such a thing as too much review, right?? anyway, keep us posted on your progress and what you decide to do. for me, i have found that as you get more into math, the more difficult it is to find support. i am not a math whiz by any stretch and i can tell in about 6 months i'm going to hit a wall. but i'm going to stick with it so cross your fingers! let's stay in touch and good luck to you! ciao, the doc

i would also look at tweedlewink. it not only teaches math but lots of other subjects and each lesson is very short. it is designed for preschoolers so i think it would work. they also have a math DVD as well. it might be a good way for you to introduce your child to math. my daughter is younger and i've really been working ont he math, but i can understand how an older child would like TW. you also might want to write to them (rightbrainchild.com) as well as the folks at little math and the Doman institute, b/c they might have a way to teach math quickly using numerals. i would look into it for sure. good luck! the doc

BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Stanford Binet IQ test to get into kindergarten

Well, believe it. Most private schools here in los Angeles do give one or the other. So if you want to go to these schools then you have to take it. Some public schools require it as well to determine if a child should be in the gifted program, but that is more a readiness test which follows them until 8th grade. Meaning even if your child flunks every gifted class they are never kicked out of the gifted program if they had a good scores on their kindergarten test. So it's important. All the moms out there in the USA, do check to see what test you school/district uses to assess participation in the gifted program. So, does anyone out there know about these tests? Thanks! The doc

BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Stanford Binet IQ test to get into kindergarten

Hello all: The doc here was wondering if anyone has had experience with the Stanfort binet iq test to get into kindergarten, or the gesell kindergarten rediness test. here in LA, most private schools give these tests to see if your child is 'right' for the school. i was wondering what you fabulous parents out there feel about this and if in other countries you and your child have had to go through this at all? i originally thought of practicing for this, but this is what my friend told me: her daughter took several practice tests with a specialist (lots of $$). anyway, what they didn't tell her was that it is like taking any other kind of standardized test: every time you take it your score is kept... until high school! so even though her child (after a few times) had aced it, every try was recorded and followed her around. it even effected where she got into high school. the reason i'm telling you is that if you think its a good idea to practice, don't practice officially as it will hurt you in the end. but regardless of that, i still want my little one to be prepared no matter what they throw at her: so my question is: how on earth can you prepare and what can you practice for? anyone have any ideas?? thanks! the doc

hello all: i've been reading this thread with interest and feel that once they leave the fabulous learning environment we've given our children, we must continue it. and i don't mean home schooling (although not for us, i think it's great.. don't get me wrong). i think we need to treat the subjects, like math and language, like we would learning an instrument or a dance lesson. if your child is really good at math and is now bored in kindergarten/1st grade then get him a tutor after school to continue his growth. let his teachers know what you're doing and that when he's done with his assignment in class he'll be doing his own thing until the rest of the class is done. i think school is there for kids to learn to be together. i wouldn't necessarily trust my child's education to the public schools. continue to take the initiative! here in LA we have several private schools that are geared towards children who are ahead of the game. yes, it's an expensive option but between my time and the amount of $$ i spend on materials, taking classes, reading books, etc. by 1st grade it would be worth it to me. when the time i right i fully intend to hire some undergrad from the math dept. at a local college and tutor my daughter so she can keep learning. i'm sure i'll probably do the same for the sciences, english, etc. wherever she is not being challenged i'll just get a tutor for that subject. food for thought. ciao, dr. primo

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Know any Geniuses?

well kids... i do know of a genius. yes, his parents are smart, but not braniacs. he's a finance guy and she is a former atty. both ivy league grads. but i know a lot of ivy league grads with average kids. so genes, maybe, but certainly not the whole thing. they are BIG doman family. like they posted bits of intelligence all over the house so wherever he looked there they were. she was a frustrated musician, so the really started the music thing early. he is now a pianist trying to become professional. he went to city college at 6 (yes you read it right... i could not make that up!) he is now 13 and just got into an ivy himself, but they won't let him in until he's 16 so now he's traveling giving concerts all over the place. the other side of this is he has NEVER been around other kids, never went to a normal school as he was completely home schooled. and this kid is WEIRD! college at 6? do you think he was invited to any parties? ;-) granted this is the extreme, but even if you just did a bit or some of all the things we talk about here all of our children are way ahead of the game. and isn't that what we want in the end? i believe it is up to the parent what kind of life they want for their child and take it from there. for them, this is what they wanted. i don't agree with it but it's not my business. it did prompt me to look into doman, and while i'm not quitting my day job to focus all of my attention on my child, it did open my eyes to a whole new world, of which i am very grateful. food for thought, ciao, the Doc

Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Hello from LA

Hello everyone! Greetings from la la land! I've been wandering around for about a month and just joined the forum. I love it! So many wonderful and caring parents who don't think flash cards are from hell! My daughter is 13 mo. we are on our 2nd viewing cycle of YBCR that we do about 3-4 x/week. We are also doing the doman dots and bits as well as his CD rom bits. I have also found some Italian DVDs that we enjoy as well from time to time. And just started tweedlewink. She likes e everything but the poetry on TW. Anyway, my biggest concern is more advanced math with the dots. We're into the mixed 3-4 number equations. I need a list of equations as well as an idea of how to flash/teach geometry, algebraic equations, etc. Anyone have any ideas? I could sure use some advice. Thanks in advance, Dr. Primo

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Math You Can See for babies and toddlers

Greetings! Dr. Primo here. I'm hoping to get some clarification. I recently downloaded some math equations as I'm teaching my little girl (13 mo.) math with the Doman dots cards. Things are going very well, but i'm running out of equations and the downloads have REALLY helped! however, one of the downloads had the title :Math You Can See for Babies and Toddlers with weekly sample schedules. i might be out of the loop but could someone tell me which program this is and where i could get the entire schedule? that would be an enormous help to me. Many thanks! the Doc
