EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Teaching MATH- What NEXT now?

hello all: as most of you may know, i started my DD on doman math first before the reading. we did EVERYTHING in the book before she was 18mo. i have to say that i thought it has helped with the next stage which for us is dr. jones. she has been able to count to 20 in 3 different languages and she counts things all the time. she did this before she was 20 mo. and continues to improve every day... she is now 22 mo. and when she watches leap frog math or fantastikos mathematkos (all of the videos from peter) she seems to get it. we also bought a number line and that helped as well. we also started counting backwards, but that is not coming as quickly as she only does that with prompting... part of that is my fault b/c i don't work on that as much with her. the addition and subtraction is coming... the number lines helps a lot with that, too. with the dots: once i was done with everything in the doman book, i made an additional set of flashcards the same size with numerals 1-100 on them, and flashed the dots and their corresponding numeral. and i'm now starting to show her 3 dots, 3 of something else, and then the number 3. this technique seems to have worked the best. i have always been a believer that if they can conquer the basics of math, the rest will follow. i truly believe it has helped with the reading as well. it's funny though... she can sound out the letters in a word, but not put it together yet! i've backed off from sight words as i want her to KNOW how to sound out the words... well, that is my 2¢. hope it helps! take care, the doc

thank you so much for your input! very helpful! since i posted this about 6-8 mo. ago, i have discovered that they are impossible to prepare for... other than the blocks, etc. now that my DD is 22 mo. she can recite the alphabet in english and spanish, can count to 20 in english spanish itallian and sign (because of the nanny) and is learning to solfege in 4 clefs (i am a professional composer/conductor). the is understanding shapes as well. and just now is KIND OF sounding out words and can add and take away. i think that is going to be a little while. so we will just keep going! i think the one thing that has always worried me about these tests is that will they recognize the skills she already knows, or will they not show up on the tests? thoughts?? the doc

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / math and science videos cheap!
|

greetings all: hope you're well. i wanted to let you all know about a fabulous science and math videos and audio CDs for cheap! the site is: http://www.kidsinglish.com/i think i found out about it on this site... not sure, but i wanted to give you a review. it is FABULOUS!! great for an older toddler... any child above 18 mo. i received 4 DVDs that are about an hour each plus 3 audio CDs that have the songs (as he teaches these concepts with cleaver songs) all for $20 including shipping! from new Zealand! isn't that great? i will say the quality isn't what i call stellar, but your kids will learn the concepts as he is really cleaver, and the price can't be beat. my DD is 18 mo. and at first, didn't like it. so i stared just playing about 3-5 min. for her sitting with me, and now she can watch about 2-3 subjects with no problem (fyi there are about 10-12 subjects on each DVD). i can't rave enough about it. this is a perfect way to introduce science and math at an early age (at least in my opinion). as you may remember from previous posts, i have been struggling with finding materials beyond doman and LM transitioning into learning numerals and concepts. this is great. hope this helps. take care, the doc

thanks for the info on the site, arvi. looks good... and reasonable! i'll let you know how it goes. as far as visual primer, i would LOVE to use it... but the last time i talked to Joe the creator, it sounded like they were concentrating on the reading. i think with so many reading programs out there they would be better off concentrating on the foreign language and the math. if you ever find out when they release the math program, do let us know. thanks again for the link! can't wait to get started, the doc

Hi! my doman sets have the info on the back, but the homemade bits don't. my plan was as we went through them i would add information, but between finishing my dissertation and my remodel, that is NOT going to happen. in addition to my 1,200 bits, i'm also including 1-100 dot cards (doman made) and 1-100 numerals (i made them). i would like to see them all together. make an offer (a fair one, of course... it took me forever to make them!) thanks the doc
