1  BrillKids Software / Little Reader 2.0 [BETA] / LR 2.0 BUG: Error on program start on: November 07, 2010, 03:04:32 PM
Ok, So here is what happened.

I was trying out LR 2.0 Beta for the first time and was getting the ends of my audio files cut off.  (I see now that there is already a post about how to fix that but I haven't looked at it yet because I am trying to report a bug...)  I decided to just restart my computer for the heck of it because I hadn't done so after I installed 2.0.  When the computer restarted and I opened LR I got an error message (See attached screenshot).

I clicked "Crash Details" and got the following information:

An application error occurred with the following information:

Cannot set CommandText while a DataReader is active

   at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.OnDoWork(DoWorkEventArgs e)
   at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.WorkerThreadStart(Object argument)

I got a diagnostic report (although the diagnostic tool is not in the place that the directions say it should be in - it is in the BrillKids folder and not the Little Reader folder) and it is attached.

I did try to reproduce the error (just started the program again) and it didn't happen the second time.
2  Local Support Groups / Foreign Language Boards Discussions / Re: Native ARABIC speaker? Need your help with Arabic curriculum please! on: October 11, 2010, 08:24:43 PM
O my gosh I am so excited!  I would pay 500 dollars for this curriculum.  Please don't make me do it though.  :/

I am not a native speaker, but I have quite a large body of grammar knowledge about the language and my husband IS a native speaker.  Together we would be able to give some very valuable input, I think.

We would LOVE to take a look at it for you.
3  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: STUCK Please help!! on: October 11, 2010, 07:29:32 PM
Salam Alaikum,

I wish I had good advice for you - am am facing the same problem.  My organization completely sucks but I want to teach my (18 month old) daughter to read English, Arabic, and do math, as well as find a way to teach her Qur'an even though I don't speak Arabic myself!

I agree with wetdreamer, just do as much as you can handle and your child will probably be able to handle it as long as you can keep him interested.

As for the scheduling, I'm not 100% sure either (as I said, my own organization sucks), but I have a few ideas.

For the Arabic I suppose it would work the same as English: show single words for a few weeks, and then start taking the single words that you have finished (like you showed them for ten days or something) and combining them into couplets.  Continue to bring new single words at the same time that you bring new couplets made from old words.

For doing English and Arabic and the same time, maybe each day you could do two sessions, each consisting of four things: one set of English single words, one set of English couplets (when you are ready for them), one set of Arabic single words, and one set of Arabic couplets.

I think it might be interesting to even try to teach the same words and couplets in both languages at the same time!  Using pictures of the concepts presented in the words might help your child see the connections between the two languages.  Cat = picture of cat = قط.  Big cat = picture of a big cat = قط كبير and so on.

I am using little reader to help me stay organized in English and I just realized how smart it would be for me to take whatever materials it is teaching in English and simply make an Arabic version to show a few minutes later.  That would help me stay on track and on a schedule with Arabic as well as long as I can keep up with building the Arabic versions.  I don't know if you use little reader though.  That might not help you.

I don't see any problems with doing all three at once - English, Arabic, and Math, if you can handle it.  That is in fact my plan.  So far I have only started English and Math - the stuff that comes ready with little reader and little math, but I hope to start teaching the Arabic soon.  My daughter always seems hungry for more when her math and English lessons are over, and those only last like 5 minutes all together, so I see no reason not to just add on one more section.

I hope I have been of help to you.

Salam Alaikum,
Melissa Wiederrecht

5  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / 18 Month old looks away from LM - advice? on: October 02, 2010, 01:40:41 PM

I'm new to this teaching babies thing...  I just got the trial of LR and LM last week and purchased the basic version of each last night.  My 18 month old DD has been enjoying it pretty well, but I have one concern that I was hoping someone could offer advice for:  She was really enjoying math for the first like 5 days or so - looking really excited to see the numbers, saying "yay!" every time it was over, and asking for it again, but after those first 5 days she has started looking really bored and looking away.  I read the Doman books and my own conclusion would simply be that she is bored, but I am not sure how to go extra fast with LM except to simply skip lessons.  Anyone have any ideas for me of how to keep her attention?

6  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Natural Birth vs. Epidural on: October 02, 2010, 05:36:05 AM
With my first pregnancy I wanted really badly to not get an epidural.  But, after like 20 hours of labor I gave in and got it, but even after 2 tries it only got rid of the pain in half my body!!!  My midwife suggested that next time I get something different, I don't remember what it was.  I'm pregnant again and I have no idea what I want to do.  I hope the same thing doesn't happen to anybody else!  It hurts!
7  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Should I buy How to teach baby math book? on: September 26, 2010, 05:12:38 PM

I have read all of the Doman books except for How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb.

The one that I found most valuable was How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence.  As for How To Teach Your Baby Math, it contains a few extra chapters of information that are not included in How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence.  These chapters are basically the information on how to specifically go about doing the Doman method for math: they explain how to make cards, where to get dots, how to position the dots, how to show the cards to your child, how to make a schedule, how to make equations and inequalities, etc.

For a person using Little Math or Little Reader, this book probably wouldn't help very much if you have already read How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence.  On the other hand if you would like help knowing how to make real, physical, doman style flash cards, you might find it useful.

The only reason I might encourage you to get the math book is that the stories scattered here in there in the book specifically relating to children doing math can be encouraging.  But they alone are probably not enough reason to buy the book.

I haven't seen the DVD, so it is hard for me to say whether the book contains more valuable information for you than the DVD>

I hope that helps,
