EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / What am I doing wrong?

Hello. I would love to have a success story to tell but this is anything but. I have been showing my daughter (2.4) little reader for about five months now and I haven't seen any recognition of any words at all. We speak Russian and Spanish at home, so at first I wasn't too discouraged since I thought that it being in English, a language she doesn't really hear all that much, LR would take longer to kick in. But, I have also been showing her files I have downloaded from the Russian section and even there, although she likes looking at the pictures, she hasn't picked up the most elemental words, words that we have seen countless times in books which she loves for me to read. She also loves to read to herself, although it isn't real reading since she will just sit there making stuff up based on the illustrations. At least she loves books. Still, I can't help but feel let down. What am I doing wrong? I started flashing, then switched to LR. All along we have read and re-read mMy books. She has a great vocabulary for a child her age and speak in complete sentences, yet she seems unable to recognize the simplest words. I am getting a bit frustrated with it all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Liza

Thanks so much for such a sincere reply. That's the direction that I was going in too. It seems like too much money for DVDs and like you said, it didn't look like it would capture the attention of my daughter all that well. What are you doing about math? Thanks once more, Liza

Hi, I'd like to ask all of you using tweedlewink wit your children, what would you say it has taught your little ones? I am trying to decode whether to shell out Ll that cash and their website makes a lot of claims, so, If you please, could you comment on the content presented and if you consider it a worthwhile program. Thanks so much, Lizaa

Thanks Tracy. As for JG, no recommendations? I thought here of all places people would be recommending it too. As for right start math, for those using it, how much would you say you spend per year? And on touch math? Would I be able to start with a two year old? Thanks, Liza

Thanks for your replies. I haven't been able to find touch math on eBay and yes, it is rather expensive. I also think that LM is probably not the way to go with my daughter. That leaves JG and right start and maybe the Montessori math. Kizudo, how old is your child? I guess I would have to start with level A although maybe I can just do what you did and go for level B instead. In any case, what is the age that they recommend starting it? Are the manipulatives reusable for later levels? It just seems that there are so many parts to it, and a lot of prep time too...Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't even seen examples of these programs so any suggestions are of great help.

Hi, I am in the process of choosing where to start with my soon to be two year old. I haven't done any math with her and don't know whether to get LM, right start math, jones' genius or some other, unknown program. Money is an issue, so I don't want to start LM only to find out that two was almost too old anyway. Any suggestions? Jones' genius looks nice since it is inexpensive and has the reading program included. Choices are always overwhelming, especially for a mom who has two hours a day (the blessed nap) to work with. Also, would I be able to use my LR to run LM files that people upload here at the forum? Thank you very much, Liza
