1  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Using Curriculum with my Toddler on: July 02, 2014, 02:18:34 PM
Thank you so much for the kind words!  I do what I can, but am an only parent, so don't have another option but to send him to school.  Are you home schooling or did you send them to public school also?
2  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Using Curriculum with my Toddler on: June 13, 2014, 07:38:52 PM
I just posted on my blog about using curriculum with my 3 year old.  I know that before I bought the curriculum I was a little apprehensive, so thought some other parents might be interested.  I have All About Spelling Level 1 and Right Start Math Level A.  I'm curious what other programs you've used with young children!

Thanks for sharing the article!

My little guy is pretty young still, not yet three, but I have started trying to work on thinking skills.  I've found some sequencing puzzles and he's been enjoying mazes.  Amazon also has some thinking skills workbooks for only a few dollars each.

5  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: I have a reader!! What now? Suggestions please! on: September 05, 2013, 08:52:42 PM
I had a similar panic last month (you can actually read my blog post about it here: http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/2013/08/keeping-up-with-super-tot.html).  He's been reading for a long time, but became a lot more fluent recently.  Anyway, he isn't interested in BOB books or the boring readers.  He hated the Preschool Prep videos (although likes the books).  He likes books that are interesting, so we do a lot of non fiction or stories with characters he likes.  It is a challenge finding books he likes that have big fonts and only a few sentences per page.  He does like some of the LeapFrog movies like Talking Word Factory and Code Caper.  We also recently started stepping into spelling (you can print the cards I made from http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/2013/08/beginner-spelling-cards.html).  In addition to using Little Reader lessons to learn to read new words, I try to make games.  I use 3 Part Cards with Toobs for matching games (I share all those under Printables).  I have also written new words on mats I made from a cut up shower curtain.  He loves to jump and skip to different words.  I've put words on his pound-a-peg toy and made little sight words zoo's for him to put the animals into. The more he words learns the more he loves to read.  I wish you luck figuring out where to go next with your little one!  I know I've spent many long hours in the night worrying over that very issue!
6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My experience with Doman, LR - son is two years old on: September 05, 2013, 08:35:52 PM
Thanks for sharing!  It sounds like your little guy is just a few weeks older than mine. smile  Good luck as you continue your parenting journey!
7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Bilingual DVDs on: August 26, 2013, 03:47:48 PM
I recently bought my son The Magic School Bus Complete Set (Amazon frequently has it pretty inexpensively).  Anyway, I love it because it has the option to watch each episode entirely in Spanish.  I like the idea of exposing him to the language in a more natural setting than some videos intended to teach Spanish (not that we don't also watch those).  I was wondering if anyone knows of any other educational series like that that offer the choice to watch it in Spanish.    Thanks!
8  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Pre-School on: February 24, 2013, 11:09:55 PM
I think this is an interesting topic.  I recently read an article comparing the different types of preschools and they found that for most kids, it just didn't matter.  The only kids who benefit from preschool are those "at risk" children who do get the attention and academic support at home.  Obviously, that is not the case for your child, who is getting much more attention than normal.

Personally, I do not plan to enroll my son in preschool.  He seems very close to your daughter academically (except he lacks the motor skills to write letters and numbers).  I think he would be bored to tears at preschool.  I also think he is more likely to pick up bad social habits from children with parents who are less strict than I, than he is to gain positive socialization skills.  He goes to a great home daycare, so he can get his socialization there!
9  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Suggestions on where to go next on: February 24, 2013, 11:04:34 PM
DS is 27 months.  We are currently doing LR, reading a ton of books and going through the alphabet by theme to work on phonics and fine motor activities (http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/search/label/Mommy%20and%20Me%20ABCs).  He is reading pretty well.  He can count to about 15 and knows his shapes, colors, and numbers.  I know it is a little premature, as we are only on J, but I am starting to worry about where to go next when we finish the alphabet units.  I don't think he will have the fine motor skills to write, which seems to limit my options.  Obviously we will work on the motor skills, but most of the pre-school workbooks I see in stores are pretty far beneath his cognitive level.  On the other hand, it is really early to start kindergarten home school curriculum.  I was thinking of maybe buying the first level of Math U See or Right Start Math (LM did nothing for him  Sad ).  Has anyone else used either these this young?  I was also thinking we could do science units.  For example, we could do a unit on the human body, where he reads and learns about muscles, bones, etc. for a period of time.  That would give me a rough framework into which I could work a lot of different types of activities.  I am open to other suggestions also!  What have you done with your 2-4 year olds?

Thank you so much for the wonderful encouragement!   I only hope I can continue as my life gets more hectic!
11  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Teaching My Toddler to Read on: February 17, 2013, 02:25:39 AM
When I first started following the BrillKids forum, I wasn't sure I'd ever get to be one of the mom's with a success story.  I realize I am by no means done teaching my son, but I feel like I can say we have been successful!  I recently shared our story of how I taught my toddler to read on my blog, just in case anyone is interested.

14  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Photographic Memory Printables on: November 11, 2012, 02:57:55 PM
Understandably so!  I don't think Xander would fully "get" Mandalas yet.  I would love to be able to show it to him on an iPad, but we do not have one (although I am in a contest to win one).  Thanks for letting me know about it, though.  I will have to remember it if we ever get one.

When you use the cards from the Brain Boxes, how do you use them?

Oh, and for anyone interested, I uploaded the basic Thomas and Super Why memory grids I made. http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/2012/11/memory-games.html
