2  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Postcard Exchange/geograpy lessons on: February 18, 2014, 04:04:52 PM
Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't been posting lately.  We found out Cayden is legally blind.  He has nystagmus often called wobbly eyes I call it dancing eyes.  He will have surgery Feb. 27th and is otherwise flourishing in French, Mandarin and Spanish thanks to the foundation the Little Reader programs have given him.

I was wondering if anyone is still participating in the postcard exchange or would like to start or give it a go again.  I have a friend in London who runs a daycare who is interested and so is Cayden.  smile

Now that some of our kids are getting older I was thinking they could write in languages they are learning or even writing prompts to each other.  Start drawing a picture and have the other finish then send it back.

Thanks in advance
Melanie

6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: I bought the lot: LR + LMus + LMath. How do I manage the doses for each package? on: July 28, 2013, 02:54:37 PM
Hi Maravilla,
I would start all the curriculums this year simultaneously.  If your little one does not have the attention span and you do not have time to break up all the lesson individually each day I would alternate days.  For example Day 1 -  LR English, LM
Day 2 - LR French, LMs
Day 3 - LR Chinese, LR available Spanish files

Of course you would pick which lesson for the day.  A lot of people teaching multiple languages have designated certain days for different languages.  I also recommend starting English because this program will introduce him to a lot of vocab, teach him how to read the whole words and the phonic sessions are a great tool.  I highly recommend you start if you haven't already to teach him letter sounds, digraphs and blends.
I noticed my son enjoyed the English lessons a lot bc it was familiar and gave him confidence.  He could also associate the pics used in Chinese to the English lessons.  I am currently on round 2 of Chinese even though he has a good grasp on the language.

Don't worry about being confused.  Sometimes I still am.  When I first joined the forum I read through a lot of the old threads.  You will find a lot of information about products, methods and experiences.
7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: I bought the lot: LR + LMus + LMath. How do I manage the doses for each package? on: July 27, 2013, 07:20:28 AM
Hi Maravilla,
Welcome to the forum  smile
Everything about your schedule depends on your son's mood.  To keep my son interested in the lessons when we first started I used to talk happily about them while we were doing fun stuff like playing on the playground.  You can try showing the lessons while he is snacking or after an activity that has taken some of his energy.  The  is to always follow his mood and if he does not want to watch try again the next day.  I have noticed if a coupe days or more goes by without the lessons my son is more attentive when they are resumed.

In the beginning I was showing my son Little Math, LR English and Chinese session 1 in the morning and session 2 in the evening.
By the time LMs was released he was reading in English so we stopped those lessons gradually.
Since then we have added French, Spanish files and Encyclopedia Knowledge files.  So each session of BrillKids takes us about half an hour.  Sometimes I split one session into two and try to catch up over the weekend.

Yes you can definitely teach all languages simultaneously.  I usually try to plan our extra lessons so that he is learning the same words in all the languages.

Looking forward to hearing more about your early learning journey
8  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: 1200 songs for $18.00 on: July 23, 2013, 06:34:21 PM
I actually got caught up on a project I'm working on for Cayden and was going to make my purchase tonight.
But I have purchased other deals from educents where it took a couple days to hear from the company.  I'm not sure if they wait until the time period is up and submit all their requests at one time.  But that is how other similar deal featuring websites work.

I think if you search online you can find coupons for them.  If not try contacting them and asking since your a new customer.  I faintly remember seeing them featured on a homeschool site with a deal recently.

Edit Update ~ A rep from the company contacted me to get info to create a username and now I am just waiting to hear from them for the login info.

I will be forever grateful to Krista G. For introducing me to the educents website.   smile
They have some great deals and I have found many products I would have never known about.
They are featuring a deal from Kidboomu where you have access to download 1200 songs they have listed on iTunes and amazon.  I am really excited to see their large selection of French and Spanish songs.  Not to mention the math facts, geography etc.  they also have sheet music and lyrics available.
They also have a lot of worksheets and videos on YouTube.  Here is the link to the deal on educents.

Looks like another long night for me creating CDs and loading up his iPad  smile

11  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Overwhelmed Mama of two under two on: July 16, 2013, 02:47:07 PM
Hi SixtineCharlotte,

Welcome to the forum and we are so glad you introduced yourself.  It sounds like you are doing an amazing job already.  I only have one child but I do recall some families involved with early learning have their youngest child present at the time they are teaching their oldest.  I have been told that the youngest benefits greatly from this while the oldest continues to move forward.  I am wondering if you include your oldest as you are beginning Doman with your youngest child.  I did a lot of review early learning with my son and have found this to be very beneficial to him mastering concepts and facts.

I think your plan to start with vocab, colors, numbers and the alphabet is great.  But I would also recommend you to let them learn the alphabet from their toys and music while you concentrate on teaching them phonics.  Im sure you have seen the clip in sparkabilities where the lips are saying the alphabet sounds vs the letter names.  There are also hundreds of phonic videos on youtube.  I used to sing a phonic rhyme for about a week before moving on to another one.   You can make your own flashcards of the alphabet and flash them while saying the letter sound.  The same for the digraph and blend sounds.  It would be best not to include pictures so that your children do not associate the gr sound to only belong to the color green.

http://www.phonicsontheweb.com/blends.php

Each week I introduce a new vocab word to my son and plan activities or make up/find stories pertaining to it.  I usually write it on the chalkboard and whiteboard as many times as he erases it.

Remember your children are young so you do not have to feel rushed and overwhelmed about all the info that you want them to learn.  I know this is hard and only recently have I started to understand this myself.

I think you will get better advice and insight from the other moms who have more than one child but I just wanted to say something as I can relate to feeling overwhelmed.

I remember reading this paper not too long ago by Daryl  Bem who is currently a professor at Cornell.  He graduated with degrees in physics and has a Phd in Social Psychology.

I understand and respect that there are individuals who are skeptic about the sixth sense.  Without the research, attempts and success of individuals we have achieved many things once thought to be impossible.
